I dunno why everyone else might or might not use steam...me personally...I use it because its convenient. No more no less. I don't have the problems most people report they get and it keeps my games organized in one location.

Good selection, excellent sales prices.

The major con is obviously eggs all in one basket, and things CAN go wrong. Then again, having all your eggs in one basket makes it a lot easier to find those eggs.

As a DD service, Steam is the biggest and the best. It provides games to my drive, without needing to faff with CD's, with a moderately attractive (at the very least uninvasive) DRM system attached that keeps the publishers happy.

No other DD service does it like Steam, simple. So therefore it seems quite obvious why people would want to unify their gaming library to one place, rather than fragment all over the place.
so basically youre saying that people would rather use steam than something like gog or gamers gate, because they want their games compiled into one big list, rather than placed on their desktop?

I like that i can just download my games on my different computers. I mean if you want to bust out the tinfoil steam could theoretically hold your games hostage and charge a usage fee or something like that, but valve is generally good to their consumers.

I have never heard of someone not getting something because it's not on Steam...that's ridiculous. Most people prefer getting things on Steam so they have one organized list of everything, and they can buy it cheap. Got GTA4 and the expansions for seven something bucks just recently. That's why.

Im a hybrid and I have always avoided Steam.

Aside from the secret world which I enjoy enough to get over it I have always preferred physical disks I also don't trust company's most of the time so I dislike the fact that Valve can wipe my entire library just because.

Also Its Fan base are extremely annoying but I have talked about them almost to death so I will shut up now.

Steam is nice, but I prefer not having any sort of check-in system attached to my game.
Even though I understand why they try to implement them.

Still, I encounter issues with Steam from time to time...sometimes very obnoxious issues.

I can buy a game and not have to worry about it becoming unplayable when I upgrade my pc. It's not like consoles where the old generation of games suddenly are no longer COOL, or HIP to be worth playing anymore. Screw that, I won't have microsoft and sony feed me that kind of garbage anymore.

I honestly don't bother caring about DRM, its never affected me. I've been gaming since the advent of keys for PC, even been tossed unceremoniously out of a CounterStrike tournament because some jackass stole my HalfLife key even though I had proof of purchase and my jewel case complete with key with me (I think the judges were bribed). Since I've been dealing with that crap since day 1 it don't bother me one damn bit. You can make your argument all day long and my mind won't change, I play my games and they work fine. Sucks that not everyone has the same experience though, but thats life in general.
There's no fairness, no equality when it comes to life except that at some point everyone gets fucked... :)

I get the all in one place argument, but I really generally resent the 'starting Steam' sign whenever I click on a game

I prefer my games to just be on my desktop and not connected to anything besides that, to be honest. If I can get a game on Steam or a game on GOG for the same price, I'll choose the GOG version because, once I download it, it's not connected to anything but my desktop. It's just a hell of a lot more convenient and I don't get the obsession with Steam, to be honest. You can go into offline mode, but that just removes the connectivity issues-- you still have to deal with all of Steam's file system inconveniences.

Two words: Steam sales. Through this, steam got me off of piracy and gave me a large library to boast. I now have more games than I will ever finish and don't need to buy another game for a long time. Steam did the unthinkable; it created a better service than piracy.

You're kinda missing the point here. Steam provides a list of ALL your games, installed or not, and allows you to install/play whichever game in the click of a button. Icons on the desktop will only be there once the game is installed, and if you have a shit ton of games you'll have to put all those icons into a folder of their own. Which isn't really a problem, but requires more organization than Steam. Hence, convenience.

Steam also allows you to add games downloaded from GoG or Gamers Gate to your games list. For 99% (i'd say 100% but apparently OP has managed to find some crazies somewhere) of Steam users it isn't an "either/or", its an "and".

Generally dont game on PC because of all the DRM which just pisses me off I use GOG because I like what they do, I download the game and then I have it on the computer and I can download it to any other comp as well if I like and there is no DRM.

Steam I find incredibly annoying and I find it generally pretty pricy occasionally you get good deals in sales but usually the sales they have bring the price to just above or about the same as where you can get it elsewhere non digitally anyway and yet people still go mad for the sales and buy games they will never play.

Annoyingly there are some games I want to play that are only on steam but I will never sign up to that service again and the more they swallow up the market the more I hate them, they are better than some alternatives but its still just choose your poison. I will support GOG and services like that but not needlessly intrusive services like Steam you can say well its not that intrusive for DRM but thats not a plus point as such as its still forcing something on us that has no reason to exist.

It's a nice guarantee you won't have to deal with fucking Games for Windows Live.
Dawn of War 2 would disagree. It needed both. Only problems I ever had with it were GFWL's fault though.

OT: Covered above, convienience, sales and all that.

I prefer to buy my games on Steam becaaaause:

#1: I love their sales.

#2: They give me a convenient place to store my games without the need to worry about losing the physical box, or any kind of CD key which may or may not have been emailed to me.

#3: They make it SO DAMNED EASY to pick up and play a game I had forgotten about for months, and randomly become really nostalgic for (e.g. the Monkey Island series).

#4: They track my gametime. This was more of a big deal before I learned that Raptr [http://raptr.com/Jaeya/wall] was a thing, but it's still a lovely feature and one I really enjoy.

#5: For me at least, it doubles as an IM service as well as a game client. It's basically taken the place of MSN for the vast majority of my friends (the ones that don't use Steam, which admittedly are few and far between, I have on Skype instead) providing me with a quick and easy way to get in touch with them and/or chat to them outside of real life/Facebook/texting/whatever.
