2: People who actually want to know why they hate it: This is the kind of people that I would like to debate games to. They hate the game, but are willing to give the game a try in order to be better informed in discussions about said game. They have better grievances to discuss, and as such, provide a better argument. This does not guarantee resolved viewpoints in the end, though. Fair warning.
These are the only people you should listen to when it comes to hatin' on games.

Personally, I buy the new FF games because I WANT them to be good. I remember the good old days of FF I-IV, and hell, even FF VIII and IX. I just wish SE could get back to that, and actually write an interesting story for once.
Doesn't that put you in group one of Magnatek's post? People that didn't expect to hate the game but did after playing it? Why are those opinions invalid?
I never said they WEREN'T invalid. I just said that they'll be said over and over until it's nearly lost all meaning. There's still a chance it is a valid reason after that, but after hearing "that one reason" countless times, you may not want to hear it again in detail. This is just with my experience, though. I've heard the same reasons for a lot of games (dumbed down for console, quickscope, and 15-min long cutscenes to name a few) from multiple people, so getting tired of them comes fairly quickly.
I didn't say you said they weren't (this is getting complicated). I was questioning Flying-Emu's statement that they weren't worth bothering with. Sure, they may get driven into the ground like you're saying, but surely they're worth considering once.

I tend to impulse buy, even if I've heard the game is pretty terrible. It's a bad habit.
I'm with him

I can't resist a cut price game. No matter what it is.

Its led to some buys Id rather not discuss

No, because I know I will dislike the games, but I still purchase them hoping that something will redeem them.

People who buy a game expecting it to be good, well, their opinion is jaded. You have to take into account that they're opinion is colored through the lens of disappointment.

I have no idea. I knew that I'd hate New Vegas. But I still bought, and even pre-ordered, the damn thing.

The change is tone for the game wasn't enough. It was nice, but the game still had horrid core gameplay. Shooting is still ass, and the game still wants you to dump all of your early level skill points into Lockpick.
Lockpick is a fun and rewarding skill, though.

I love science fiction, I love a good story, I love plot development, I love a nice romance story and I love action.

So I bought Mass Effect...

And boy was I surprised by how much I did NOT like that game. Even if the game's elements appeal to you, even if all the reviews are shockingly good, you can still hate a game.

sometimes its not the buyers fault! Say you love the original game and the sequel comes out and you expect it to be more of the same, you do hear stories to the contrary, but you like the game enough to convince yourself that the game will be more or less the same, but then when you play it, its so different from the original game that you cant help but hate its differences....

E.g. Take multiplayer in Dawn of war 1... it was absolutely timeless excellence, 8 player maps, insane computer difficulty, tonnes of variety in factions. and then they bring out the sequel; dawn 2, which although different, in singleplayer; is awesome...
But in multplayer.... what a piece of shit. They changed so much of what had made the original game's multiplayer awesome, so its not my fault for buying a game i hate, its the developers for changing the parts i love.

Counter-point: Why would someone who is looking forward to a game ruin it for themselves by reading the story early?
This.

OP's view is pretty damn narrow. I doubt people "know" they're going to hate the game, other than a few people who might just want to play it to better tear it apart (say, like Yahtzee).

The average gamer might hear a thing or two - oh epic story, oh neat new combat system, streamlined purchasing etc. Sounds good in theory so you buy it... and are horribly dissapointed.

I did not like FFXIII at all, after around 30hrs invested I had to quit and trade it in. Just couldn't do it. I seemed good from what I read, and I'm not against JRPGs or anything, but that game sucked. Most games that are described as "linear" are at least larger than a corridor lol.

Anyway, the point is, you don't buy a game you know you'll hate. At worst, you buy a game that you're on the fence about - a game you've heard mixed reviews of but think there's some merit in there.

I'd prefer that to a jaded opinion. At least walking in knowing that you probably won't enjoy it gives you a more... shall we say, rounded opinion of the game in general.

Except it doesn't, that's my point. You've just swapped one bias for another! There's nothing well-rounded about that!

And "jaded" means lacking enthusiasm. "Knowing you probably won't enjoy it" is a jaded opinion.

I often think about buying FF13 at a cut price even though i'm sure i will hate the fuck out of it...Then i remember it has a Leona Lewis soundtrack...Back on the shelf you go FF13.

Seriously though a really cheap price is sometimes all you need to buy a game you might hate.

As for FF13, I rented it, got to this field of monsters, was like wtf is this shit, return to blockbuster.

For me I baught fable 1, enjoyed it, fable 2, not so much, I don't know why I got 3 but I was dissapointed still.

If there's a fable 4, I won't touch it.

As best I can figure, people feel obligated to purchase the next installment of a series, even when they know it's draining the dregs of horribleness. It's some sort of weird compulsion, a requirement of being part of the fandom/hatedom.

It's like all the people who hate Star Wars in 3D, yet will go see it anyway. They know they'll be complaining afterwards, but they'll have to see so the credibility for proper indignation. You can't know something's really bad unless you've wasted money on it.

I've never done this so I can't contribute much to the conversation. It just seems silly to buy something I know I won't like.

Unless someone has a lot of disposable income (and if you do you should share some with me) people don't buy games they know they will hate; I think people buy game with even a glimmer of hope that they might like it. 9/10 people might hate a game but people have that nagging sense that they might be that 1 that does like it. Optimism maybe?

I've noticed this alot and even on this very site that is supposto be understanding when it comes to games.

Am gonna be using Final fantasy as my basis cause am one of the biggest fans who thinks every game is perfect.
FF13 has garnered so much hate on this site when personnly its my favorite. All i gotta ask is why did you spend 60$ dollars to get a game you knew you wernt gonna like. All the info about the game was out there way before release. Hell i imported it and was playing it in december. There was so much footage from japan on it translations of the story everything. so why do we get all these haters? Whyed they get it in the first place?

Same thing happened with X-2. People knew it was about the girls they knew everything but they bought and complained.

People knew Starcraft 2 WINGS OF LIBERTY was only having the terran story.

I dont understand gamers anymore its just most illogical. Does anyone know why they do this?
People have too much money, honestly I'm thirteen and every time I get a new game I fall in love with it, even if the game is bad I don't stop because I or somebody else spent money on it and I'm not a wasteful person. I can understand when game reviewers buy a game because it is their profession and they have to buy it even if the know they will hate it. Alas there are some people who won't save their money or play a game for longer than a month and have to buy a new game so they will buy a game they know they will be bad, I still don't get why though, perhaps they buy the games and then after they finished they deduce that it is bad. If someone seriously buys a game that they know they are not going to like they should take a step back and think "There are children starving to death all over Africa, there are children in Asia forced to work for the equivalent of 6 cents an hour and I'm such a douche that I will buy a game that I hate."

P.S. If they buy a game that they hate but buy it because it is popular they should know you don't always have to follow the herd. You can go buy a game from a company that is trying to get off the ground by making great games like the company Frictional Games, they are a personal favorite :)

P.S.S. Check out frictional games and I will be your best friend :D

People don't expect to dislike things. Well, maybe some do, but I'm not one of them. For example, FFXII. Game had perfect scores when I looked it up. And I am (or was at the time, at least) a huge Final Fantasy fan. I was expecting it to be great. I'm sure it was for a lot of people, but I didn't like it. I had no way of knowing in advance that I wasn't going to like it. I didn't go into it with the intent of disliking it.

So, there it is. Even if I see games that get poor reception, I like to give them a chance to surprise me. Assassin's Creed got some bad feedback, but I loved it. I loved it more than the sequels to be honest, even if Altair annoys me.
