Why do people care if Yahtzee disses a game they love?

I love it when he disses a game i love, because usually i agree and find what he's saying all the more funny, generally the only times i dont find ZP (as) funny is when he's reviewing a game i havent played, so i cant really connect with the hyperbolic criticism

Oh who knows. I love Kirby's Epic Yarn but you don't see me bitching about it. Like when people did so with his Super Smash Bros. Brawl video.

Man that was funny. Think I'm going to go watch it and the mailbag video about it again.

I don't know, I used to get annoyed if he gave a bad review to a game I liked, but that didn't last long. Now I don't care if he hates a game I love, their all opinions in the end.

Well, that is kind of his thing; finding things about a game that he dislikes and then make Jokes about it.
One might argue that somethings he jokes about can't be done in another way or some things he rants about are done way way worse in other games which he reviewed and neglected to mention that part. Whatever. He's on a clock here, if he can't fit a joke somewhere in a certain amount of time then he'll drop the subject and move on to another target to ***** about.

I liked "Oblivion" and i liked the ZP Review of that game. He apparently didn't like Oblivion all that much and in some Points i agree with him, the mainquest is a big pile of something rather unpleasant and the Faces of characters could have used some work.

ZP Reviews point out some of the Flaws of a game and if that game would be an overall good game which sells like a Steak Dispenser then maybe some of the Flaws will be removed in the inevitable knock offs of the previous game.
Like "Saints Row 2" had a Character without a cousin.

There are some Videos in which he didn't mention this or that. The "fighting stance" in the "Witcher" looked hilarious. He couldn't think of a Joke for that?
The Lockpicking or bypassing Minigames in the Mass Effect Games. It's like Bioware was deliberately trying to put something in there that nobody likes and while they where at it, they've put it in there a million times. I have to "lockpick" a pile of stones in ME1. About a thousand times. I have to bypass a million doors in ME2, inside enemy installations, while carrying a grenade launcher on my back. Those Minigames are trying my Patience. Yahtzee seems to like them, otherwise he would have made a joke about it.

I would have liked more anger about the bugs in "Fallout: New Vegas". The Bugs in there did prevent some people from playing. There where some big Patches, some of the Bugs are still there and the game still feels unfinished. I can fill up "Empty soda Bottles" with Prickly Pear. Not "Empty Nuka Cola Bottles" or any other empty bottle.
That's something where the Developer dropped the Ball.
Another thing is the overlapping Quests. Sure, it may be realistic to unwittingly fail a quest when you kill someone who is involved in a Quest. But that realism flies right out the window when you get the "Quest failed" message along with the name of a quest you may not even have yet. I doubt that was intended.

Some Enemies are rather hard while others are very easy by comparison. Was the Nerf for "Perception" intended? You might as well leave it rather low, Enemies successfully ambush you even with 10 Perception.

I just don't know about that and i hate that. When i'm stuck in a quest, i should be thinking where to search for clues that i might have overlooked. Instead, i have this constant feeling in the back of my head that i may be stuck because of a bug. I shouldn't have this Feeling, it is rather detrimental to the atmosphere of the Game.
It's even worse when that feeling proves to be not a feeling at all but a glance at my new precognitive abilities.

In short: When games are buggy, ZP should call that out. In Bethesda games (and "New Vegas") or rather the PC Version of those games you can pretty much count on the modding community to create some kind of workaround for the bugs. Even if its just a magical "move active quest one step forward" button.
Sadly, the half-baked BS Obsidian delivered does not work well with some mods. I have created a mod that does the same thing in the Games Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Guess where its bugging out?

Buggy or unfinished games are really annoying. ZP should call that out more in my Opinion.

i think i recall Yahtzee talking about this a while back; that the reason people rail against his rants is because they secretly don't love the game, or have to justify why they bought the game/console in the first place. Personally: i've never had the problem of watching one of yahtzee's video's and feeling the need to e-mail him telling him where he can shove the review/man-meat and how he misunderstood the game. He, at the end of the day wants what he see's the consumers deserve; a good game. Many of the games he's reviewed negatively are many i agree with, although Bayonetta is one of my beloved games, i love it and i don't really care what the feedback is

I get it and love it.

Though sometime I wish at the end he would give a more concrete yes I liked the game/no this game is shit because sometimes while watching the reviews I get the feeling he hated the game and doesn't think it is playable only for a few weeks later or at the end of the year for him to rank it as one of his favorite.

It's quite simple really, behind everyone one of Yahtzee's criticisms there is an ounce of truth. Have you ever dated someone whom you thought was perfect but your friends noticed some glaring flaw in? Failing that have you ever seen the episode of How I Met Your Mother where exactly that happens? In either event you (Ted) upon being informed of this flaw can't help but fixate on it no matter how minor it is. So if Yahtzee were to review a game that you really enjoyed and point out a flaw that you may have overlooked the flaw becomes that much more apparent to you for having missed it the first time.

Personally this doesn't bother me and I find his reviews funny, but I do make it a point to wait until after I beat a particularly immersive game to watch his reviews, just in case.

Well, I don't. I like bulletstorm and he dissed it. I just disagreed with him and some of his points and moved on, just like I do with everyone else. All it did was make the review not particularly funny for me. That's all.

Eh, I don't think he did a good job with the Sim3, however it wasn't because it was a bad game, but because it was out of his element. Things that made me dislike the game as a veteran player weren't within the spectrum of stuff he covered in favour of a cheeky franchise review. Basically he said "you can buy crap and babysit!", which would be like me playing the latest FPS and saying "you can shoot things!"

Whatever, just wash your hands.
because there are 2 reasons to read a game review, one is to see what the game is like but the other is to validate a game that you enjoyed so a reviewer saying that a game you loved is like being hit with a shit stick, it makes you feel bad for enjoying it

and that is ultimately where we get fanboys from

I personally don't, critic or not it's just a one man's opinion, if you enjoy that game, no one has the right to take that fun from you.

If what he did for that game was "diss" it, then it's no wonder people think all he does is spew vitriol, if the 'mild disappointment' it feels like he actually expressed triggers that sort of response.

The reason people get upset is out of insecurity for their own beliefs, and that if someone proclaims that they're wrong, then they have a knee-jerk reflex that says that they themselves couldn't possibly be wrong, and that it is the vitriolic reviewer that is wrong. (He actually addressed this in the mailbox episode, alluding to the responses he got from people who saw the SSBB review)

Having said that, I think Yahtzee falls into the same trap that people like Jon Stewart fall into: the idea that because what they say are opinions channeled through a medium of comedy, that two things are true: 1) that ultimately what they say isn't that important, and because of that, we have 2) that when they disagree with an established convention, the only reason they expressed that opinion was to be funny.

Personally, the idea that Yahtzee expresses only negative opinions about games, with only a few exceptions (Amnesia and Portal/Orange Box being the notable standouts) strikes me as having highly selective judgement as to what he claims about said games. I think the reason people think he's constantly negative is that they're used to the mainstream review process, whereby only exceedingly bad games actually receive that kind of negative criticism, and even mediocre games might get poor ratings, but their reviews are still very rose-tinted.

But acknowledging for a second that his reviews do lean far more to the cynical side than neutral, the notion that "he's only expressing his opinion (comically), therefore, it shouldn't matter to you" seems almost as farcical as the knee-jerk reaction that fan-boys take. You should care about what people like him have to say about the medium. You don't have to agree with him, but realize that there's more to it than just saying whether he likes a game or not. The reason he doesn't (usually) do the "Yes this is good" or "No this is shit" part is out of acknowledgement that that's not the point of the review, the point is to explain what's good about the game, and what isn't, and not try to summarize the thing in one sentence.

Oh, and the debate between reviewers and critics: There's no difference. I'm sure a dictionary will make some sort of distinction between the two, but the actual, pragmatic difference between the two is not going to matter. At the end of the day, both are discussing what's good and what's bad about a product, both will try to rate it overall, and both are completely subjective. One might argue that the "reviewer" will stray closer to neutrality, but with such a term really being pretty nebulous in its definition, (plus, the word "criticism" has had its definition warped and twisted in ways unimaginable) I'm not sure that particular criterion counts as a valid comparison between the two.

I think it's the fact that they want to love the game, but simultaneously they know that what he's picking on can't really be justified by their own arguments, and they either know it or refuse to accept it. This fills them with anger and frustration which they direct at Yahtzee instead of the games.

It's much the same reason why religious people get so angry and frustrated with non-believers all the time.

I love Zero Punctuation. It's the first feature on The Escapist I started watching, and it's definitely my favourite. However, I often see in the comments (and elsewhere on the web) people bitching and moaning because Yahtzee disparaged a game that they personally liked. I am genuinely puzzled by this behaviour, for two reasons:

1. I would think this would be blindingly obvious, but people do realize that Zero Punctuation is only partly a game review, right? The other part is straight-up comedy. If you're coming to ZP for a fair and balanced review of a game then you're really not too bright. ZP spews bile and vitriol on a regular basis in order to balance out the reams of fanboy bullshit spewed by corporate shills everywhere else on the web. And also, to provide dick jokes. Lots and lots of dick jokes. Humour generally relies on a certain amount of exaggeration, and ZP is no exception. If you want to find out what Yahtzee really thinks about things, read his column.

2. Why would someone take a negative review of a game personally? I can see that you would disagree with the person giving the review and want to point out what you disagree about, but this whole "grrah Yahtzee you dissed my game I'm so mad" seems misplaced. You didn't create the game. Very likely the people involved in the game's creation aren't friends or relatives. Why do you feel the need to ride into battle, trumpets blaring, in defense of some corporation who's never heard of you and doesn't care to?

I guess my point is, calm down and don't take things so personally. You'll live longer.

Silly poster. Reviews, and even features like ZP (which I agree, are at best only partially reviews) aren't there to critique a game or entertain. They're there for reassurance. If Yahtzee doesn't do that then what good is he?

I don't take it personally for two main reasons, I don't take a majority of what the excellent Mr. Crowshaw says seriously (Because as you said, alot of it is for the sake of comedy), and most of what he says when he does a game I like is pretty accurate criticism. Like Mass Effect, I love that game but that tank thing can be a MASSIVE pain in the ass to drive around.

Incorrect. You might want to learn the difference between a game reviewer and a game CRITIC, one is to give an unbias review of the games positives and negatives. The other is to provide critical exasperations of faults of a game, with or without humor makes no difference the goal is the same. As such, Yahtzee is the later, he does not do what hes does to blow sunshine and sparkles up your rear about games and make you feel "reassured" in what you purchased. He states his opinions on shortcomings in games and adds humor to it. Whether you choose to agree with him or not is not his concern, but to say he is in the wrong for what he provides is foolish and ignorant. And furthermore, I must pose the question if you don't like him, WHY BOTHER WATCHING?

When Yahtzee criticizes a game I love just shows me the reasons other may not appreciate it, and gives me a new perspective on it. Also his reviews are some of the only truly honest reviews that are watched by a large fan base.

Because this is the internet and thats what people do when theyre bored.
As for me I don't really come for the jokes ( I don't see how ya'll can cause he speaks intelligently and really fast!) I just like hearing him belittle games. Cause well, he's good at it.
