Why do people care if Yahtzee disses a game they love?

As long as the critic is intellectually honest about the game, then I don't mind. If he only played five or ten minutes and then quit, I would have an issue. There are some games I love that I admit have huge flaws, but the parts that I like are worth the parts that I don't. If he ripped apart some of those games for those flaws, I would probably agree with the review and be entertained.

I don't really love any game. I may enjoy playing games but will often find myself dissing on the games I play a lot.

I love it when he goes for games I play, partially because I have similar likes to him (strong singleplayer, a low bullshit-to-game ratio), but partially because he picks up and makes fun of issues I've encountered that have bothered me. The thing about Yahtzee is he can enjoy a game, but in his own words, "Nobody likes it when I'm nice to a game." I'm not saying he's not sincere, I'm pretty sure he usually is, but he blows up the bad stuff and doesn't spend much time on the good stuff.

Basically, if you love a game, but the problems bug you, you can watch ZP and laugh about them with it.

Yahtzee is just a person, and like all people, has an opinion about stuff. He put Just Cause 2 as his game of the year..

That's when I realised he thought very differently to me.

I only watch the videos for entertainment - I take everything he says with a huge grain of salt and certainly don't think he has insightful knowledge of the industry.

Because the fact that he disagrees with them goes against their desires to worship him as a god.

In other words, people take him too seriously.

Incorrect. You might want to learn the difference between a game reviewer and a game CRITIC, one is to give an unbias review of the games positives and negatives.
you need to learn the difference between an actual belief and a satirical one. I know "sarcasm" is difficult to detect on the internet, but WOW, I did not think there was any way anyone could possibly take that comment as a serious statement.

The point being (Since I apparently do have to spell it out) to satirise the idea that "games I like should get praise," the reason both behind a lot of reassurance, and the question at the beginning of this thread.

I don't see this much with Yahtzee, but I know exactly what you mean, TC. I don't get it either. I'm a huge fan of thatguywiththeglasses.com, and there are people who lose their freaking minds when someone on that site trashes a movie or game they like. I even read a comment by someone who said he loses confidence in his own opinion by watching the reviewers on the site. Wow.

First of all, it is okay to disagree with people. You don't have to get all bent out of shape because no one realizes the cinematic greatness of Street Fighter: The Movie like you do. It doesn't mean the reviewer is right or that you're wrong.

Second, and more importantly, who cares if you are wrong? So what if you like a terrible movie or game? If you like it, you like it. I own and love the Mortal Kombat movie(Not "Annihilation," that's disgusting.), and I died laughing when the Nostalgia Critic tore into it. He's right. It is a bad movie. I still watch it, and I still love it.

There's no reason we should be at each other's throats because we have differing views. If it bothers you that much, ignore the person and keep loving your movie/game, but finding out you're wrong about something isn't always bad. You'll never learn anything if you keep shutting out people who disagree with you.

For whats its worth, notch (the guy who made Minecraft) was sharing the Minecraft episode of ZP on his twitter. That was the first time I watched ZP and I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe...My life was devoid of fast-talking, dick-joke based comedy prior to ZP.

Yahtzee dislikes most of the games I play and I could care less, he often points out what we also see in a game, but he is just more animated. Yahtzee has to be the funniest person on the internet.

Yahtzee is a typical critic, very opinionated yet has to maintain a "persona" for his comic routine to keep viewers watching.

I don't really take him that seriously, I prefer Extra Credits when I want to learn about the aspects of gaming and design rather than listen to snobby British guy rant on and on about how he hates motion controls, how Nintendo sold it soul to Satan, how stupid/pretentious Americans are (irony on the pretentious part?) and how no game can be as perfect as Portal, Silent Hill 2, or any of the games he grew up with.

Just my opinion, I'm never butt hurt by his criticisms because I know he's a critic, it's his job to be a prick.

He' funny none the less.

I don't mind at all. His opinions don't make games great games inferior and bad games any better. I do welcome his differing perspective. I don't agree with them all but mostly they're quite reasonable.

Except for Uncharted series and wtf it has to do with racism. that was stretching it.

I do like his back story of how he came to review certain games though. those are usually funny.

Well I care when he disses a game I like because I respect Yahtzee's opinion and hold it in high regard because he obviously knows what he's talking about butwhen his opinion is against my own opinion in regards to games I end up thinking of everything I disagree with him on.

Because people take information from people who are smarter then them and pass that opinion off as their own to appear smarter. The amount of people who proclaim they love a game after Yahtzee says he does is so funny, just watch the popularity of a game on this site after Yahtzee says he loves it
See: Silent Hill 2
Yeah that is a great example of this effect. Saints Row 2 is another good one as people just jump onto the bandwagon the minute he says something is good. The funny thing is that if you try and talk to them, they are defiant that it is their free minded opinion.

I dunno, Silent Hill 2 isn't an obscure game or anything, and before he reviewed it I feel like there was already a pretty big consensus on the internet of it being the best silent hill. Besides, the game was out way before he even started, so even for people who missed the bandwagon when it came out like me, still played it before he ever mentioned it.

I think the point is that while Yahtzee is half comedy, the other half is bascially like an art critique which tend to be more serious then someone on gamestop gushing over how cool a lead character is. In an art critique it doesn't matter, you critique whatever flaw there is because nothing is perfect and without a real critique an artist can never improve. I think since this aspect is pretty serious and professional, and I have yet to see people who take apart games looking for the same things as he does, people identify with his opinions and want him to like what they like.

I actually find that I have very different ideas of the games he reviews but it doesn't really bother me. I should note that since I was 12 I've only ever cared about the story in games, and that may play a part too.

to go to ZP for a fair and balanced review is to call your nemesis to drive you to the airport, you will be dissapointed and you won't get anywhere you want

my simile if you steal it i will find you....

none the less he made me want to move to australia defying the thousands of deadly creatures directly from satans sitting room just for the chance to talk to him(and autographs lots and lots of autographs)
