Because people can't control and limit themselves they have no idea what self restraint is and they're quick to blame it on the game being "Addicting" even though it isn't an actual addiction. It's lazy people plain and simple.
So, im guessing from this statement that there is also no sex, alcohol and food (aka Compulsive overeating) addiction?

and they never exhibit any withdraw symptoms??? there is no such rehab centre for them??? it has never effect anyone???

:/

There's a thousand and one ways that they get to you, but suffice to say that they ninja your brain by providing a quick hit of accomplishment that you lack in real life, regardless of what you DO in RL.

Food isn't an addiction but alcohol is definitely a drug and sex? Depends on who you ask because it also effects the chemicals in your brain.
well just to enlighten you, Food can be an addiction even though we have to eat there are those who eat to relive stress or in fact cannot stop thinking about it so they would normally eat until they vomit.
as for alcohol can be many factors both including environmental and genetics (environmental is by the far most common cause) for example :
a person is depressed because of an mental illness, traumatic event or just because he is bored which could make him compulsively binge drink as a emotional make-up or other social, physiological problems
a person who never had any alcohol products but has a history of family alcohol addiction could be an addict with one drink

sex addiction from what I understood is the same as ADHD, we are all on a spectrum where there are some who can control a habit and there are some who cant, for those who cant would need help or just an unregulated level dopamine that is produced

unfortunately gents this topic isn't about addictions it's about wow.

when I was playing wow I definitely felt the pull of people counting on me to do things. I almost never skipped a class to play wow, maybe 2 at the most when I was palying but I definitely procrastinated on homework and my grades dropped or a semester before I brought it back under control.

I've been blessed with a fairly good sense of self contol when it comes to playing games. Usually I just choose to play a game rather than something else, but I can fortunately choose not to if I so desire or I need to actually do something.

Wo is a toughy because it is fun, there are boring parts but even though you could describe as fun becasue atleast your chatting and hanging out with other real people, and despite being online they are your friends.

I know I have an addictive personality, and I know I have a degree course to finish, that's why I haven't started playing WoW yet. A couple more months and I'll be able to post why I'm addicted and what keeps me playing.

Addictive is a strong word. World of Warcraft is just like any other hobby. The people who play it enjoy it, so they play often.

It's awesome, immersive, fun and due to blizzards black magic, impossible to get out of your head. I wet cold turkey about a year ago and I still have the urge to start play again.

Aside from it being a great game it has a reward schedule that has been shown through various psychological experiments, the random reward schedule, to be the most addictive. In short, if you stick a rat in front of a bar and every time it presses it it gets a reward it will eventually get bored. Stick that same rat in front of a bar that gives you a reward randomly, that rat will stick with the bar-pressing a lot longer.

So, if you have a predisposition to developing an addiction that reward schedule will get you (It goes for all MMOs, or games that give you a reward you weren't expecting, ie you do a dungeon, and surprise surprise that piece of loot drops).

It's designed to be addictive. It's a good game too, but it is designed to keep you coming back for more.

I've played WoW before, it was okay I guess... But I'm wondering why so much people get addicted to it, and why this game?
They don't get addicted to the game as much as they get addicted to the community. I spend most of my WoW career idling in Ironforge talking in guild.

As many have alluded to, WoW gives you a sense of accomplishment. You are getting things done and making progress. Sadly only in a game. If you do have a ton of time to kill it can't be beat as cheap entertainment though.
