It just seems like a waste to read something that is not canon

not to mention, generally it is of inferior quality

Like everything else, it's 90% crap. Fanfiction just doesn't have the filters to keep out its 90%.
that's because it's on the internet, and even though there is good stuff often times it is not worth weeding through the bad...

Most of it is pretty shit. If it's not creepy porn, it's a badly written fantasy of an episode where the two most powerful characters from two different franchises team up (or fight). Wait....it seems like animated comic book movies pull the same stuff....cept for the badly written part.

As many have said before me,90% of everything is crap. Never it is more obvious than on the internet. Hell,i have some talent - and my fanfics (which won't be published, mind you) are still horrendous. It's just not original stuff - fans are hardly ever as good as the author of idea.

Also there certainly ARE a lots of slash fic and Mary Sues. But as i have said,it's just that everyone can write something and post it on the net. Then there's anonymity, which means author won't come around with an army of loyal fans and burn your neighborhood down...

When you think about it for a second, fanfiction & the internet is a good thing. Providing a creative outlet for kids to write novel length stories? Great! Anyone who grew up pre-internet days can just ask themselves how much creative writing they or anyone they knew did.

Of course on the other hand the problem with fanfiction is 90-99% of it really isn't fit for public consumption. Can't them for effort though.

I have to agree that people hate fan-fiction as a result of bad fan-fiction. Even I cringe at some of the monsters created by my fellow fan-ficcers.

Because it is usually someones fantasy (sometimes sexual) involving characters I love/loved in a purely platonic way. I don't want my opinion of my childhood heroes changed because fan X wants to make a love scene between Legolas and Aragorn. Also, the writing is normally terrible.

So, I've read a couple, but then steered well clear.

the majority of it is crap. tho i do think it's funny the people that are saying "oh it's crap except mine" granted there are probly one or two good ones but most of them are also crap.

most of the time i don't think people know how to write a proper story and think that they can so they just put stuff in there they think they should. i'm not saying i'm a great writer but i know enough that i should try writing a fictional story. i think everyone that wants to write fanfiction should take a course on writing and have their work critiqued, having them being told that their writing sux and how to fix it might do the world some good

Because 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of it is utter shite. I often find it funny that fans complain when something like a film adaptation of a video game is made, and all the fans whine how their beloved franchise has been ruined and "bastardized", and yet fanfiction writers do more bastardizing then Hollywood could ever do in a million years, bar none.

I've always had a soft spot for fanfiction. As long as you steer away from slash fics, self-insertion ones, and the vampire alternates, you're good.
Also, what's a Mary Sue?

Because most of it is absolute rubbish. "My Immortal" is a great example of why most fanfiction sucks. Still, among the profusion of forced melodramatic dialogue'd "what if" romance furry yaoi crossover author self-implant self-torturing self-hating shite that populates much of the "fanfiction" corner of the internet, there are a few gems. I once heard about a now-successful author who got her stroke in writing from writing Star Wars fanfiction and putting it on the internet. Don't quite remember her name...the point is fanfiction is hated because roughly 90% of it blows goats.

What I find unfortunate isn't that most people have a rather low opinion of fanfiction. They should, considering some of the stuff I've read has been so bad it has literally given me a headache. I think it's unfortunate that the people who can't write for shit are able to cast their lot in with the people who can.

I write fanfiction meself. So does my girlfriend. Between us, I wouldn't say it tops Shakespeare, but it's not bad writing. See, there are certain things that just shouldn't have fanfiction written about them. I write Resident Evil fanfiction because I love the characters and, let's face it, there are holes in the plot that could probably have a decent-sized meteorite pass through them without so much as bending the paper. She re-imagines classic fairy tales, making them delightfully perverse and cynical (psychotic nymphomaniac Goldilocks is my favorite). Both of these work because the official canon is ambiguous. It allows almost anyone to add their own spin to the story. The results, in some cases, can be pretty interesting.

I don't hate fanfic. Actually I enjoy some of what I read and I also have a story on there. No comments yet and it is crap yes but the thing is that I had tried.
