Good reason for that actually. They take good franchises and kill them, they rehash the same sports games over and over again, they often show blatant bias against certain consoles or just deny consoles good things in general, etc.

Would you like to take your pick?

Anyway, people hate Mainstream because sometimes mainstream can be overhyped to the point where they think something can cure cancer when it can barely treat a cold. The thing in question may be good, but it might not be worthy of all the praise. That's where the hate comes from.
Well all i know is their sales figures speak for themselves. If you hate them for making money then hate every other company for the same reasons, isnt that the point of a business model?
Business model is usually to NOT do something stupid. EA seems to not follow that general rule, though. They'd make alot more money if they actually got their act together. They have much room for improvement.

What ever is popular cannot, by definition, be good. Everybody knows that. And since everybody thinks so, they are wrong, so what is popular IS good after all. Except it isn't... argh! My counter-culture hipster snobbery is imploding under the weight of it's own dubious arguments! Blargharagrahrahra what a world what a world...! *dies*

I've never found Dane Cook funny.

And the beef people have with halo IS the fact it became popular. The game is ok, it's the fact it got disproportionally popular compared with it's quality that irritates many people.

I am personally into underground music, and it has nothing to do with
a) being popular
b) worrying about bands selling out.
lets consider that some people like some things, while other people like others. My issue comes from integrity. Not a lot of people can see my point on music but I like when a band is in it for the craft rather then the payout. I listen to bands who will never make millions of dollars because I appreciate there commitment to music and I just happen to enjoy how it sounds. It's easy to assume people just do things to be popular, on the other hand some people just appreciate things you may not. (also on this note if i Love a band and they suddenly start making tonnes of money i'm all for it. good for them.)

Honestly, I never liked Dane Cook as a comdian/actor, I like him more if was an actor/comedian because then I'd see why his material is average.

You would be surprised. Most successful companies build a well-oiled, efficient system for doing the dumbest things possible, but it only seems so from the outside. To them everyone is doing their job; i.e. covering their own ass and passing the buck to some other department. This is how successful companies, such as oh say, I don't know, Sony's Playstation department, turn a runaway success like the PSX and PS2, and then make the collosal abortion that is the PS3 oh god I shouldn't have said that *makes crucifix with fingers to ward off Sony fanboy-vampires*

People like thinking that they're better than other people.

When you think about, that's the answer to a lot of questions about human behavior.

Ah, so despite the mistakes EA makes, me disliking them is not okay, yet making a crack at the PS3's expense is just fine?

And you call me the fanboy. Ironic.

Cuz I'm afraid that if I support the mainstream ideas, all original ideas will dry up and disappear.

A few reasons, but two main ones.

One, people like to feel different or better than others.
Two, people may not like being associated with everyone else who likes whatever thing is concerned.

I've always asked my self that for quite a while and then I realized that some people just like feeling like they are origional for hating something. Other times they are just not impressed and Gamers tend to be an annoyingly vocal lot in their opinions. There are a number of reasons but really if you like something then the views of others shouldn't get to you.

We do not hate EA for making money, we hate them for making games.

Err, pardon me, but maybe I didn't make myself clear. I was trying to agree with you. Yes, EA is dumb and does dumb things. I agree with you there. I made the Sony reference only for the sake of argument as an example.

The part I disagreed with is how you said "business model is to not do stupid things." On the contrary, the accepted business model is often to do exactly stupid things, as much as possible, until the company fails. For more examples: the American auto industry, the mainframe computing industry (destroyed by PCs, which they considered toys), the American steel industry, the MP3 player market (destroyed walkmans and cd players), etc.

The problem is that a bad game becomes that much more difficult to ignore when it's mainstream. Halo and Half-life are crap, but if they hadn't become mainstream, other games wouldn't have so desperately tried to emulate them. As it is, they pretty much wrecked the FPS genre which I really used to like. Same thing with RPGs: Baldur's Gate -series were some of the best games I have ever played, and then along came the craptastic display known as Knights of the Old Republic, and boom, that's another genre down the drain (and, yes I know they were both made by Bioware. That only makes the pain worse, not better).

Actually I think most games I like were mainstream at the time I got into them, but the unwashed masses have since drifted away from them, and suddenly I'm an indie gamer. Which isn't to say that mainstream games of today are necessarily bad. I think the GTA series is great, and that's about as mainstream as Dan Brown. Of course the PC-versions of those games are horrible, the latest being completely broken, but hey, consoles are the mainstream now, so that's to be expected.

Still wondering why some people are just a bit frustrated with the mainstream, and just might be a bit vocal about it?

Some people can recognise someone pushing the boundaries of art and enjoy that, other's just like to enjoy their lives with some light distraction. Neither approach is wrong, it's just down to whatever gets you through life. I can understand why people would like either, I don't believe in hating on one or the other.

The same with Halo. It was praised and then became really popular and people turned against it.

Same with music, anime, movies, tv shows. If people do like it they won't admit it to others, because they're... idk afraid of people's opinion of them?

Why are people so against mainstream? Please tell me your opinion!
Because people always feel the need to be 'Different'. Makes them feel cool.

I just point and laugh. I like what ever I like. Dane cooks actually pretty good. He's dumb and funny.

That sounds pretty out there. Where's the profit in that? And since Microsoft is fixing their mistakes, are they technically doing the accepted business model, or are they actually doing good?

Ugh. I'm confused.
