Why do people hate people who play WoW?

Okay, so please don't just post back to this with "Because they are lame." or "Because WoW is for fags". Not what I am looking for.

Anyway! I just started playing say.... Five days ago and I don't see much diffrence between it and any other MMO's. I mean, MMO's are a bit nerdy yes but it seems people really hate, or look down on the people who play it. Plus there are tons of shows like South Park who do spoofs about it and how everyone who play it suck. I'm not really getting it though. We all play games but wht makes playing WoW even more nerdy?

I made a thread about this a while back. Was kinda popular...then everybody left.
I think the gist of it involved a few people hating it because of various personal reasons (mishaps with the community, addiction problems, the usual), they told their friends, and it basically spread.
Half the 'haters' will quote other people on why WoW is bad. Then the other half will say it's bad because it's addicting.

Because everyone has heard the horror stories of what wow does to people. Such as divorces, neglect of responsibilities, etc. And most people don't hear the good things about wow, only the bad. Also haters will hate.

The thing that makes WoW subject to hate is how it takes over your life so much. I'm serious, since you just started playing it be warned. WoW is awesome and fun and the people are nice and you really want to get to that level or get that gear, but lives are important...

Every like 5-6 months or so. I get the urge to go out and hop on a private server and play for a couple weeks.
But then I get bored, it's repetitiveness starts to grate on my nerves..
Then half a year later I repeat the process.

Just kidding, I have nothing against WoW players, I've even been thinking about getting to an MMO myself someday. But the thing about playing WoW is that it's like you're digging yourself into a deep, deep hole. If you were walking past someone in such a hole, wouldn't you think about spitting on them? Of course you would.

Because WoW took my grandmother soul. All she does is play WoW 24/7 mostly. And when ask to do something else she refuse to do it because she on a raid or something.

the whole private server thing might be the reason. private server is not as stable or as good as live is. very few scripted events etc...

I would say it's because people who play MMOs are usually people with a lot of free time and a high tolerance for repetition, and most people I know think that kind of person's standards are set far too low, and therefore, they aren't video game connoisseurs. None of that is true of course. More power to MMO players; you have fun with your games, and I'll have fun with mine, and we can continue to coexist.

I do not hate WoW players, as I was one for a few years, but I hate WoW for it's addictiveness and I am glad I quit it years ago. It was my fault for getting addicted but I will never go back to WoW nor will I ever support it or even care about it. If someone plays WoW, that's their choice, I just hope they understand moderation and don't get addicted as I will. You will regret it. I hope the best of luck to you OP, and also hope you find it fun at the very least, just not addiction level fun.

I agree with this. I'm currently subscribed to WoW, and I've played maybe 1 hour today, if that. I think people have misconceptions of it, it's always spoken of like it's a black hole that will inevitably consume you, but it's hardly addictive and it really depends on the person playing. Everyone I know that plays WoW plays it quite casually, maybe for 1 or 2 hours a day, similar to someone who plays COD. I don't know anybody who is "addicted".

.. but yeah, people like to assume that everyone who plays it only plays to escape their dull, basement dwelling lives.
