Why do people hate people who play WoW?

I find this amusing.
I've heard the stories about how DnD was demonised back in the day as being antisocial and to some extent, addictive amongst other things. Parents and other gullible fools all believed the stories and spread their bullshit all over the place.

Games have suffered the same problem today. Videogames are apparently bad for children and violent games will make them violent people. Again, parents and gullible fools have believed and spread these lies.

Now here's the funny bit...
World of Warcraft has also recieved the same treatment. Its antisocial, its addictive, people have died playing it.
The difference in this situation? Now the lies have spread into the gaming community. The same people who were seemingly immune to the crap being spoken of DnD and videogames in general, have succumbed to this stupidity.

DnD won't make you a Satanist*. A twisted mind does that.
Videogames won't make you a murderer. Lack of morals does that.
WoW won't create an addiction. An inability to make real life friends and prioritise your life does that.

*The classical human sacrifice/dark ritual style Satanism, not the religion based on selfishness over selflessness.

Have you ever talked to someone who plays WoW (preferably not casual) and let it slip about how you play WoW (be it casual) or use to play it. You get something that resembles an earful of their raiding/PVP experiences preferably admiring a few guildies about how awesome a Tank/DPS/Healer they are or about how awesome their characters themselves are. "Want to see my Armory?" fuck no I do not care about your epic gear, achievements or PVP ratings. Guess how many level 80s I got? You got 4? you say. Awesome, good for you!

Gosh it must have been horribly for people to talk to me when I thought I was a big shot being the first guild in my realm to fully clear Black Temple but now I just realised how much of an asshole I must have sound about my skills as a healer.

Sometimes even WoW players hate other WoW players its just the nature of the egotism that comes with the whole Armory and inspection crap.

I remember watching the WoW trailer on my War Craft III cd and being so amped. I then tried wow the month it came out and I was just so disappointed, I expected so much....more. Ah well.

I just find a majority of WoW players strange, they really prefer their digital life.

As for me I've been clean for 20 months :D haha

Okay, so please don't just post back to this with "Because they are lame." or "Because WoW is for fags". Not what I am looking for.

Anyway! I just started playing say.... Five days ago and I don't see much diffrence between it and any other MMO's. I mean, MMO's are a bit nerdy yes but it seems people really hate, or look down on the people who play it. Plus there are tons of shows like South Park who do spoofs about it and how everyone who play it suck. I'm not really getting it though. We all play games but wht makes playing WoW even more nerdy?
MMO's in general annoy me, you're essentially paying for a second job. One that's generally far less interesting.

I don't have a problem with MMO players however.

Iunno, I play WoW and no one really gives me shit for it (they hate on the game). But then again I'm a generally social person who doesn't neglect others for WoW. It's something to do in my spare time.

The sad thing is that even if we say it's about addiction, why don't we have the same attitude towards alcohol or weed. Almost everyone who I talk with that bring up this topic are drinking buddies or known drinkers/pot heads. It's interesting that people will criticize WoW for being addictive, damaging, and a waste of money only to watch them go drain over a hundred a week on booze.

Because WoW players are constantly talking about WoW, to people who don't play, and couldn't care less about WoW.

I dunno about hating them...but I would never date a hardcore wow player. Not ever.
That's like dating someone who spends 4-5 hours each day doing something that's completely non-intellectually stimulating, like playing pong.

I hate WoW. I hate how it indirectly ruined several of my favorite multiplayer games with its endless required grind and viral popularity. I hate how it diverted many of my friends away; trapping them in an endless loop of dailies during the week and raids on the weekend with no end in sight. I hate how every MMO now emulates it in a vain attempt to beat it.

And yes, you can think of me as petty, but screw you if you even think about preaching to me about this; I saw the results, and they speak louder than any pro-WoW argument you can bang out on your keyboard.

Simply put, I really do not like World of Warcraft. At all.

Despite all of this, I've never found a reason to hate the people playing WoW, with a few exceptionally annoying discussions about the game (endless bitching about patches and balance, in situations I couldn't walk away from).
Their community isn't even on a top 10 list of "Awful Online Gaming Communities" for me, which is saying a lot. My friends' guild is even pretty cool to hang around with.
But that isn't enough to convince me to play; not while other, better multiplayer games exist (this is where someone quotes sales figures to me to "prove" how WoW is the best online game ever. Don't bother).

I would rather have some fucking GAMEPLAY in my cooperative game than a lot of nothing.

I apologize for the hostile response, but I've really had it out with certain parties elsewhere on the internet over this subject, and I somehow doubt it represents the WoW community as a whole.

I hate WoW for the same reason I hate Second Life: because my roommate is an addict. She gets online on these things and ignores everything else. Me, our cats, even her boyfriend. Nothing else exists when she's gaming, and I fucking loathe it.

It's a hard thing to do unless you like staring at the back of someone's head for hours on end. I swear I know the back of my boyfriend's head better than his face because it's pretty much all I ever see of him. And when he's leveling an alt? I probably won't hear a word from him at all for a week or more.

He's a great person and had the WoW playing under control until he lost his job a few months ago. Now it's just WoW 24/7 and his personality has changed into something like a zombie. He used to eventually get bored with it, but with Cataclysm coming I dread the near future.

I used to have no opinion of WoW at all really and I know it isn't the game or Blizzard's fault. But this experience is personally why I'm starting to hate the game.

The thing that makes WoW subject to hate is how it takes over your life so much. I'm serious, since you just started playing it be warned. WoW is awesome and fun and the people are nice and you really want to get to that level or get that gear, but lives are important...

...kinda

Kidding aside yeah thats why.
This is true. This whole summer I found myself trying to build my schedule around my guild's usual Wednesday and Sunday raid time, and I think the reason behind that is because all of my guild mates are really nice people and just fun to play with... and of course killing the occasional mean alliance is fun too ^__^

Because it's Blizzards attempt to create a zombie army to take over the world. That what the gaming industry is: each company's bid on making a zombie army for world domination. Of course Blizzard is the most successful so everyone wants to make it less popular so we aren't ruled by them. Though a Blizzard run world wouldn't be too bad. Things would move slower but the end result would be pretty satisfactory despite the long long wait.

I dislike the people proliferating wow due to the game making gaming into a job.

I play games for fun, and while I pay for entertainment I feel it a necessity to then get my money's worth. My moral compass of not wasting money makes wow the opposite of fun to me.

If fun is spending $15 a month on a game that they love, then good for them. I just don't like the idea.

Like most people mentioned, most of the hatred is for the game itself, not the people who play it. It's mostly because of how people hear it takes over your life.

Probably because they play another MMO that is less popular than WoW and feel the need to compensate. Personally I could care less if you waste your bloody time grinding all the live long day, it's your time and money to toss down the drain. I really dislike WoW for taking what was, admittedly, extremely unoriginal material that Blizzard had actually gone about growing into a universe that felt like it was more than just ripped off wholeheartedly from Warhammer and D&D, and then killing it dead by setting it in a static universe populated with jackasses.

But I see no reason to hate you for playing the game, anymore than I hate people who play all the other games I think are stupid or otherwise not worth my time.
