I will admit it myself, most Dubstep is garbage and lazy, I have however went looking in the genre itself and found some really good songs. Dubstep is at it's best when it isn't about the WUB(removes 90% of dub) and isn't lazy, just sampling one noise and repeat.

Those songs are far in between but they are good, almost enough to dismiss the rest of the shit from the genre, almost.

how high and mighty some people feel to think it is to them to define what music is^^

i like electronic music which includes dubstep and i like alternative rock and i like pop to some extend oh and also jpop
i don't like country, jazz and most of metal
and all for different reasons

does that say anything?.. nope
as far as i'm concerned people can dance themselves into trance to a firetruck siren
the ways of music are mysterious^^

its purposeless noise, can't even dance to it, waste of time.

music should either evoke emotion (see anger, happiness, sadness, melancholy, peace) or be in conjunction with an activity (see swing music, most videogame songs, and the massively wide genre known as "dance")

step achieves none of these criteria, whilst also ruining the various songs it comes across (im talking to you whoever posted that butchered version of still alive.

It'l go away in due time, its gained very little traction, and whilst some elements may survive by being integrated into other genres such as house and techno(which has already happened to a certain extent), the movement itself will die down.
please leave it to the listeners if and which emotions are evoked by music
there are a number of dubstep tracks that give me goosebumps all over
same with a lot of other songs you probably wouldn't consider "music"

this is one of them
]

on the basic terms they are music, just lazy uninspired and useless music.
the fact that you are calling it lazy shows me you don't know what you are talking about
you have no idea how much work and creativity goes into a single track

just because you don't "get" the music doesn't mean there is no vision behind it

for.....fuck.....sake

just because somone can enjoy somthing you deem to be "less of quality" does not automatically make them a brainless dumbass...I can enjoy dubstep, I can also enjoy other types of music, (and BTW everyone has been saying this about pop-music and other popular mass apeal stuff for ageis, its nothing new)

am I saying "OMG dubstep is the best type of music EVAR!!!"? no, I enjoy it when Im in the mood for it, it may seem incomprehensible to somone with (obviously) suprior taste in music, but for some reason alot of people...both stupid and smart do

just like as much as I hate twilight I'm not about to assume everyone who likes it is a completle dumbass
First, I want to introduce to you the fact that people exaggerate for effect. I don't literally think that just because a otherwise pleasant individual as yourself can enjoy dubstep, doesn't mean you are dumb.
Second, my point was also that I don't want to hear it everywhere, it's become so popular that they cram it into where it don't belong, like AC and Uncharted trailers.
Third, I still want it to disappear.

And finally, I didn't mean to insult anyone, well, execpt those who worship dubstep I suppose, although this thread fueled old hate for dubstep that came into play here. So I was myself kinda pissed off when I wrote that, which appearently pissed you off a bit, so I suppose it's my duty as a good citizen to apologize if you were offended.

Good things do happen with dubstep's sound, when you take it and try to grow it beyond a bass-line and a massive drop-- Very good things.

I'm all for doing away with trash that amateurs throw together in Ableton in 15 minutes and call music, but anyone who vehemently states dubstep can't make music at all is in denial or just plain ignorant.

I know a few of these tracks push genre lines pretty hard, perhaps even break them, but dubstep's influence on the above ranges from outright explicit to hovering around just in the background. And, personally, as a lover of a wide range of music, I think this is good shit. But maybe that's just me.

Personally don't hate it or like it. As long as it as some beat in the background besides the wubwubwub it is usually good to listen to. Yea its dance music, but is there anything wrong with that?

...I thought that was electronica...Did they change the name? Damn these kids now-a-days, changing the name of music genres just because they can use computers to make it sound slightly different. Back in my day we knew what musical genres we had and we considered ourselves damn lucky to have those. And that was when a parent could justify taking music away! We treasured our music, we did! We didn't go around re-naming our musical genres, no sir. We knew what metal was metal (at least until someone with brain damage decided to call his metal new) and we new what rap was rap (at least until the gangsters went and gangstered it up).

Right, not that old but dubstep just sounds, to me, like really slowed down electronica. Take some Electronica and put it on ridlyn and there's you sum dub-step.

Thats not even remotely dubstep. You do realise everything made by skrillex isnt INSTANTLY dubstep yeh? He actually does alot of other tracks in various electronic genres.

If you're having a hard time dealing with the fact that the music scene changes, and that your precious, narrow view of music is no longer "in", then might I suggest you pick up a copy of the daily mail, practice how loud you can make tutting noises at people half your age, head on over to the "How do you know you're old?" thread (they're waiting for you, gramps) and wait for death to come put you out of your misery. You've got a lot of disapproving to do over the next 40 years.
Oh stop being such a hipster, that's like saying "Quit hatin' on Disney, they've changed for the better! Only old people like dark, meaningful interesting stories!".

OP: It's very easy to dance to, for one. Another reason is that it can help some people study. I'll usualy put on some Deadmau5 but turn it down whenever I'm coming up on exam weeks, and it helps me focus. As to number 2, see Deadmau5, especially when he has SOFI singing. How it became popular? Again, easy to dance to and if you find the right stuff it has moments of unpredictability, making your brain wonder "WTF did I just hear? I think I liked it."

Personal taste and group think mentality... it's not really hard to understand...
Can it be that you actually think your music is objectively good versus subjectively? You do understand there is a huge population out there that can't stand the music you love right?

Why do people like dubstep? because they enjoy listening to it, end of fucking story'

I like dubstep, it can take a song with one emotion and change it into something completely new and unexpected.
Like this Muse mix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWPG8R_wdY8

I doubt many of you have much idea how hard it acually is to compose something completely new to go under an existing vocal track, whilst both taking direction from and not sounding exactly like the original song.

Quite fuckin hard.

when people refer to dubstep as ''music'', i am personally offended as a musician. there is no talent or artistry involved. if you search on youtube ''how to make dubstep'', the first video will show you how in under 5 minutes. its really that easy to be a DJ, if you have ever owned an Ipod your basically there. in my country we have a name for people that live for dubstep and are out at clubs every-night, picking up chiiiicks and generally living life to the MAX-treme...

''bogans''
It require skill and talent to make any sort of music, dj music included, you seem to have very little idea of what dj's actually do.
Any true musician respects other forms of musical art and artists other than their own. is it really that easy to be a DJ? you wont be able to do proper beatmatching in months Alphonse_Lamperouge

People probably like it for the same reason as any other music? It's just enjoyable to listen to.

Sir, this is completely off topic, but you totally remind me of an old friend who had an affinity for Kisame Chibis and what you said is totally something he would say. That's irrelevant to everything else in this thread, but... Yeah.

I'd never been to clear on what exactly dubstep was so I took some time and listened to the examples of good dubstep people posted here. Starting at about 25 seconds in, Stan's reaction to the music is an approximate simulation of what I heard. (I apologize the vid is an advert for some shitty blog but it was pretty much all that came up in the youtube search)

It sounds pretty terrible to be honest, I can't get into it at all.

You know, I was actually just last night comparing my reaction to dubstep with that South Park episode.

It changed "oonce oonce oonce" to "wub wub wub" and techno was so much better back in my day, damn you kids.

I like electro industrial, but I don't like 90% of bands calling themselves that. Same is true of dubstep. There's some good dubstep and a LOT of dross.

Here's some good stuff, though it probably won't sell you unless you're already partial to these kinds of sounds:

If you want to pick nits, most of this isn't true blue dubstep, but "psystep". Not that anyone who isn't a DJ or producer will give a flipping toss.
