So I just saw movie Cabin in the woods . I won't spoil the movie , but it is of the horror genre . Now ,while watching the movie my girlfriend was laughing all the while. She obviously found it funny. I did too rather, and i got to thinking, why am i enjoying this? The movie is good thats not to issue, but i started thinking that i like watching people get tortured/die. Which is a scary thought ! Then i remembered these are fictional characters. I'm pretty sure i wouldn't enjoy watching real people die ( i sure to god hope not ),so i guess i just like watching fictional people die, which isn't as bad, but nevertheless it's kinda morbid. Now i have never seen a real person die and i really hope i go through my life without seeing a maimed corpse, but watching fictional characters walk to their doom apparently fills me with glee. Why is that ? Why do people (including myself ) enjoy watching horror movies, where we know people will die in horrible ways? Where does this enjoyment come from ? what are your thoughts about this escapists ?
Semi-on-topic : For some reason i keep thinking about colloseums and gladiators. People used to watch real people fight to the death in the past. Do humans have an need to see death? Do we enjoy seeing others struggle for their lives ?
