Yes, I already know there is a metal thread going on, but I'm wanting to ask a specific question with this one.

I know lots of people on the Escapist like metal a lot, and I also know a lot of other gamers and people seem to like metal a lot, and I'm usually one to equally accept any type of music..but metal just seems to be peculiar for me.

For the most part, I love all of the instrumentals in any sort of metal song I hear. It's loud, energetic, and just has a sort of ummph to it. The only probably I have with this is, that the vocals to most of these songs sound like the vocalist is possessed(which might be the point sometimes) or that they need cough syrup or something, and it kind of ruins the whole experience for me.

The only metal band that I have seemed to find that suits my tastes(I'm not sure if they are even metal), is Hammerfall. They seem to have exactly everything that I want out of metal. Kind of how like Queen has their rock opera take to rock & roll, Hammerfall to me kind of sounds like the metal equivalent, so...metal opera??

So to make it simpler...this is the kind of metal I don't like and don't seem to understand:

While this is the kind of metal I do like and want to know if there is more of:

So in ending, why do you like metal so much? and also, can you recommend any that is more closer to my tastes?

I like Amon Amarth! I'm not your typical guy that likes metal, though... But I do like it because it just sounds badass. Also, I love fantasy settings and metal definitely captures it, although it usually sounds evil.

A band called Turisas, that got me into metal, has mostly clean vocals in their album, The Varangian Way. But there are some harsh vocals as well. Here's an example:

Another band I like without harsh vocals is Korpiklaani.

A band similar to the one you posted is Lordi. I think they're classified as Hard Rock, but every song seems to have its own genre these days.

Now, I know you said you don't like the harsh vocals... But check out Ensiferum and Finntroll anyways! They're great.

I love, and I mean I fucking love the guitar in metal music. Drums are pretty cool, too. But yeah, I have to agree, the vocals... SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUAWK. Ahem. 'Scuse me. I had to do it.

Anyways, there's a reason I stick to Shin Megami Tensei music when it comes to metal.

Because it's loud and the few that truly like it push it onto their other friends that it's good. It's rebellious and the new audience of metal is within the age ranges of enjoying things that are rebellious.

Musically, it's a train-wreck. I think it's more so a genre built off of a belief system, not the music itself, I think.

Personally I'd rather listen to orchestral music than the bellowing and caterwauling of somebody named "Ogre" who doesn't wear a shirt.

I only like a few sub-genres of metal myself those being doom, drone, black, and some death metal. I absolutely hate thrash and power metal though which is what the second video you have is. My opinion is that power metal is for girls and thrash metal is for barbarians. I like doom metal because its loud as fuck and crushing just awesome to listen to with a good pair of headphones.

Its got energy, and it emphasizes instrumentals. Thats why I like it anyway.

Also, if you like Hammerfall you will love Dream Evil.

There are just many different genres of Metal.

Screaming is also just another type of singing. Some people like it, some don't.

I'm an Iron maiden fanatic myself.

... I don't really like metal. There are the odd bands that I like (probably lamer borderline metal/punk rock ones) but I do like punk rock. Loud noise and a fast beat fascinate me. Metal's louder noise but a bit slower a beat, so I guess you could call it a reasonable tradeoff.

Stop listening to the wrong bands, then?

OT: The energy and the sound.

I personally enjoy black metal, death metal, doom metal and straight-up heavy metal. I also have the most obscure stuff on here by far. :D

In this thread's future: I H8 MEHTUL! IT R JUST SCR33MING!! BAAWWWWW!

It's generally got pretty good tunes, though I must agree most metal bands have horrible vocals.
I'm more of a classic rock man, myself.

EDIT: Tyr kicks ass, though.

Metal is awesome.

It doesn't have to have screaming to be Metal.

I could introduce you to plenty of good Metal bands, but would need to discuss it with you to get an idea what you'll like.

That said, there's plenty of shitty Metal out there, just like there's plenty of other shitty music in every other genre.

You just have to be willing to embrace the emotion and the badassness of the growling/screaming to really get into the meat of modern Metal. There's plenty of old-school Metal for those who can't, though.

I don't listen to too much but I think it's because of the "hatred" that go into a lot of metal songs.

Well, the growling/screaming in some genres of metal is actually considered to be as aesthetic as a guitar solo. It's just a means to emphasize the music.

However, I have found a nice balance between the two to be enjoyable.

I have been hooked on these guys for a long time due to their lead vocalist's AMAZING voice. They usually do both growling/screaming along with clean vocals. They can best be described as a mix of power and thrash.
