Why do people not care about music?

It seems to me nowadays that unless a band or an artist is being shoved down someone's throat by a record label, blog, magazine, or whatever, people generally don't give a shit. Perhaps this is to blame for the state of 'modern music' nowadays. The industry decides what is to be sold, and the public laps it up without making a choice of their own. Do you agree? Do you disagree? What music do you listen to that is relatively unknown? Would you like an artist if they weren't popular? Discuss!

I figured people didnt care because most people have decided what they already like. I for one prefer the Opening and Ending themes to Japanese animes and I dont even have a clue whos whos in the world of music. Hell I thought Kayne West was a white guy bring back Cowboy movies (ITS A GOD DAMN COWBOY NAME).

Of course you do get that odd ball person who enjoys all music.

music isn't doomed, not everybody is into all of the mainstream stuff. Hell I hate most of it myself (or at least all of the recent stuff that is ;3)

People will seek out their own bands.... but it's the blogs, magazines and industries that they find out about these bands through.
That's the sad part. And ultimately, they're not really deciding for themselves as the blogger has decided whether the band is worthy to write about or not, usually influenced by another blog. It's a never ending circle of copy cat! Who can honestly say that if a new band arrived that you adored and who everyone else hated, would you still like them? Probably not.

I hate most music nowadays, it's now only boy bands who can't sing but make up for it with their good looks (Im looking at you,Justin Beiber...)

Well I've never been one to enjoy a band because it's "popular" or "the newest big thing". I like bands because I like their music, plain and simple. I can't speak for everyone, and I'm sure that there are people out there who listen to certain bands because that's what's "in" at the moment, but I'm also pretty sure that for the most part people listen to bands because they like the bands music. And I wouldn't be surprised if many of them avoided or just disregarded bands that weren't popular. Perhaps they have bend "told" that the band's music is good, but they still enjoy it.

And as for people just "lapping up" whatever companies come out with, I can tell you know that they aren't all mindless sheep listening to what they're told to listen to. The reason companies will fund these bands that are "mainstream" and "hip" is because they know that this is what the average person will like, thus the company will make a lot of money. Don't forget the fact that companies are at the mercy of the consumer. They may attempt to influence the consumer's taste and they may pander to it; but in the end if the consumer just doesn't want a company's product, then the company can do nothing about it.

Why the hell should I go dig around for music when I can just switch the radio or TV on and there's stuff shoved in my face? It tends to be catchy enough to bop along to and simple enough to sing along to (if you want).

On the other hand, there are some people who stop liking stuff when it becomes popular. That's probably worse than the other way round...

Some people just don't grow up listening to a lot of music, especially if it's not a big thing among their circle of friends. Similar to how some people just don't end up reading a lot of novels, or following sports.

It doesn't have to have anything to do with the industry, or modern music, or radio, or the Internet, or unicorns, or anything else. Some people are passionate about it, and others just couldn't care less.

I do care about music, and I generally disregard all mass media advertising of such.

Though, it seems like today's people are more lazy than normal, there is a myriad of up and coming bands in YOUR area, you just have to find them, visit different venues, go to local concerts; hell, go see your neighborhood bars' house band.

The fact of the matter is the internet has caused people to become extremely lazy. So the only music people generally listen to will come to them by the easiest means necessary. The record labels have picked up on this and have now made it easier and more convenient than ever for you to buy their music.

Good job world, your laziness is a detriment to art.

To answer your last two questions, I listen to a lot of 'unknown' music. Yes, I do like artists even though they aren't popular.

I really have to dig deep to find something I like, and most of the time it will be just one song and I won't enjoy the rest of the album. I'm surprisingly picky. Finding music for myself is such a job that I've been listening to the same songs for at least six years. Trying to seek that stuff out is so much of a hassle. However, I will say you shouldn't dislike something that you previously liked because it becomes popular, have some sense, your tastes are your tastes.

I've always understood people like that as not having found something that moves them, relates to them, musically speaking. You just haven't found that 'where have you been all my life' piece of music. Which is sad, as all you have probably been fed is nothing but shit, which would make anyone jaded.

Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe the people that buy popular music actually enjoy popular music?

i enjoy metal, most types i love, others are growing on me. The classics from the 80's are the best, before i started to listen to metal i didnt like music simple as that. When i found something i liked i began to fall in love with music. I absolutly hate mainstream music today.

Believe it or not, more people are looking for music on their own today. Yes, the radio is still filled with assembly-line pop. But look at record sales. The highest selling album of 2009 sold just a third of the amount the #1 of 1999 did. As these trends continue, we've seen some of my favorite bands sneak up to the charts this year: Arcade Fire (debuted at #1), The National, Vampire Weekend (also debuted at #1), Spoon, and more.

The downside of this? People are getting their music from more specific places now, often completely ignoring old mediums like radio. So the radio has become even more specific in turn, playing just what those who are still listening want to hear. My advice: just turn off the radio.

I turned off the radio 5 years ago. mainly because of the DJs. To answer a question, if it was my music at the top of the charts, with legions of fans, I would probably be such an egotistical twat that it wouldn't bother me. Then again, I wonder how Justin Bieber and the like feel. Maybe they're too thick to think about their own careers in that way? Either that, or they're too busy being loaded and having champagne jacuzzi parties with models.

You rang?

Seriously, I won't lie and say I listen to absolutely everything, but I do have groups I like in most, if not all, genres of music. And OP, nobody's to blame for the state of modern music because there is nothing to blame them for. The popular stuff is popular for a reason! Things don't just inexplicably sell, people out there enjoyed listening to it, liked that movie, or had fun with that game.
