Why do people not care about music?

Well I don't care about music because it just doesn't interest me. I don't care if a song is popular or obscure, and there are some songs I listen to, but I almost never buy music and have no desire to go to any concert or show. I was invited to go to this year's Download festival by my Sister and her friends, and I couldn't care less.

I'd much rather listen to something interesting like a book, play, show, or documentary.

People don't care because they know what they already like, I have no music that was crammed down my throat by the industry.
Digital Distribution also helps people break away from following the industry.

Well that was pretty awesome.

Well there's two versions of this.
There's the bullshit version of "oh now it's popular so I hate it for that reason alone"

There's also the pseudo-legitimate version where when a band becomes too popular and they start to change their sound just to further appeal to the masses, in which case fans will change the preference to the band. Granted, hating the band, including the older stuff you liked, because of that is also bullshit.

OT: Some people simply don't care enough. There's not necessarily a reason for that. I'd say (based off nothing of course) that there are just as many people out there who don't care about music at all as there are people who don't due to what kinds they've been exposed to not making them interested enough to look for more.

Honestly, I was in that second category until around whenever Linkin Park started first getting attention. Not that I think Linkin Park is a great example of music, but it was the heaviest stuff I had really heard at the time and the lower to middle year school music classes didn't really do much for me. So after hearing LP on the radio I was thinking "man that's pretty awesome". Few other bands I liked here and there had enough radio play for me get into them. Then once I got to end of high school/beginning of college I was like "enough of this, time find music I really like". Having some friends into more obscure stuff helps too.

I care about music, when it catches my e-... ear.
Rammstein, System of a Down and Mindless Self Indulgence all caught my ear, I love listening to them.

Not too many bands have really had the same effect on me, maybe I'm picky, maybe I just don't listen to enough music... that said, I do listen to quite a bit of 8-bit and game music, so even though I can't name too many bands or artists, I can tell you I enjoy and deeply appreciate music.

Perhaps they, you know, like said music?
I'm fine as long as I got my... Well I can't really name a single genre I like.
If a band I like gets 'popular' great! More music!

Hey! I know him! though I don't particularly like that song, have you heard Raggae Mortis?

Anyway, my music tastes are constantly evolving, due to my natural curiosity, so I change myself quite a lot.

You know, I haven't been here very long but I am seeing a seriously annoying trend in these "Why do people hate/not like -whatever I like-?" threads.

Thing is, whether right or wrong, for good or bad everyone has their own opinion and whether they are in to the same edgy, underground music you are, or whether they care about art in gaming or not is down to their own personal opinion. Nothing you can do about it.

Really, there isn't much to work out here.

Its hard for people to be exposed to all music, I don't know anyone that listens exclusively to top 40, but I do a lot know people who instantly dismiss it and listen to absolutely none of it no matter what it is. Exposer from a producer is a powerful thing, it makes it easy for people to be expose to something when it is every where, so it finds its audience.

Well I like all GOOD music. I agree that stations like Radio 1 feed utter crap to the mainstream audience. But I read Q and they have some cool new bands that come out and I always give most of em a listen when I get the chance. :)

This, exactly. I didn't give a shit about music until I heard Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell. That song got me into metal.

Would I like a band if it weren't popular? Yes, and I do. I think part of the problem is that a lot of young people are retarded sheep who simply follow the trends. It's the only way to account for the existence, not to mention popularity of dubstep and similar.

I listen to whatever I want and I don't give shit what anyone else thinks about it. I'll agree that pop music sucks, but... that's always been the case. Looking back at the 80's with crap like Journey and Bryan Adams and the 90's with travesties like Hanson and N Sync. I mean what was once pretty boy boy bands and space guitar solos is now rap music. Everyone should be aware that popular music has always been artistically-void garbage for the criminally unimaginative, but that's just my opinion.

People care about music, a lot. I can't force someone to enjoy good music, but at the same time they could think my personal taste is as awful as I think theirs is. Music is quite possibly THE most subjective form of art. If people truly didn't care about music, they wouldn't listen to anything at all. Now listening to music to fit into a group of people, that's a different story.

Now if you'll excuse I'm off to listen to King Crimson's Court of the Crimson King... again.

I don't listen to music much at all anymore.
No, seriously, the only music I regularly listen to is whatever is in the background of games or movies.
Even when on the road driving, I seldom listen to music anymore, I keep the radio off and just listen to the soothing sound of the engine instead.

It seems to me nowadays that unless a band or an artist is being shoved down someone's throat by a record label, blog, magazine, or whatever, people generally don't give a shit. Perhaps this is to blame for the state of 'modern music' nowadays. The industry decides what is to be sold, and the public laps it up without making a choice of their own. Do you agree? Do you disagree? What music do you listen to that is relatively unknown? Would you like an artist if they weren't popular? Discuss!
Disagree. There's kickass music everywhere. I read an article in RS about the sad state of the live music scene this summer, and how big-name acts were cancelling shows left and right due to low ticket sales.

Then, groups like Thievery Corp, Ghostland Observatory, and STS9 get together, roll through my state, and sell-out a three-night run. that's just shy of 30,000 tickets, yo.
Maybe Thievery Corporation are the only ones on that list that might be considered "popular," and judging from the posts I've put up about these groups in the past, I might be downright surprised if anyone else here has even heard of any of these bands except from me....

We have more choice nowadays than we ever did in the past what with the internet. The thing you're complaining about is that the stuff you enjoy is not popular and mainstream. I hate most modern music but whether or not I think it's bad doesn't make it true. The same thing happened in the 50's and 60's when rock and roll became popular. The industry just caters to the largest audience, which happens to be pop and rap and whatever else kids these days listen to. It'll change again to something else, something new, and i'm probably not going to enjoy it...

You do realise just how stupid you just made yourself sound? I'm no avid fan of dubstep but in what way is metal "better"? In such a subjective arguement it's impossible to make such assured judgements.

Who can honestly say that if a new band arrived that you adored and who everyone else hated, would you still like them? Probably not.
Abso-fragging-lutely. I don't give a toss whether or not anyone likes the music I listen to, and I don't come across it in the first place by reading blogs. No, it's the cold hand of impersonal sorting algorithms for me!

I wasn't joking there, I stumble across music via sites like Pandora or the staggeringly massive list of recommendations Amazon tosses my way that I sort through for gems. I've never actually started listening to a band after having somebody recommend them - it might make the name stand out later when I randomly come across them myself again and decide to give them a listen, but I'm invariably the fellow giving out recommendations.

Are you kidding? Journey made an inspirational song that the entire music industry felt the need to copy.Joking aside though, they were actually complete shit.

Awesome, and thank you. We had planned Halloween camping this October, and this music will fit the bill for the car ride very nicely.

This is why I can't complain about this type of thread being overdone; you're always going to find something you haven't heard through the magic of the internet.
People don't care about music? All we get are things shoved down our throats by record labels? Well no, this thread itself disproves that theory because I just discovered something I hadn't heard before through the help of a fellow music lover.

Unless of course FrostyChick is under the employ of Voltaire...
