Why do people post on games and topics that don't interest them?

I don't post often here for this very reason, no matter what I am talking about I get this type of reply a lot;

"I don't like any of the games you guys are talking about. There is no way i'd have anything intelligent to say about anything you guys have mentioned. I want everyone to know that."

Obviously these replies are worded a little differently, but that is the main "bullet point" of the post. Why do people do this? I suck at racing games so i'm not going to read, much less reply to a post about Need for Speed or Project Gotham.

Possibly to increase their post counts,to be annoying, or to be ironic, but i don't know, i'm not interested in this topic at all.

As soon as I finish plumbing the depths of the black hole that is the Internet's average intelligence, I'll let you know.

Remember: Average IQ of a mob = Lowest individual IQ score / number of people in mob.

Because post count. Is. Everything.

On a massive forum like this as well, I assume some people do it to get noticed more.

To get their opinion across?
While I see it as pointless, and a fair bit of "Post Farming", it technically would fit under Posting one's Opinion on the game being mentioned.

This can be relevant enough at times to make it Technically within the right, but usually it boils down to:

OP: What did you think of the new Leprechaun Robot League movie?
Poster: I didn't rent it, so I wouldn't know.
[footnote]I have actually seen this Reply before.
Said Poster got a fair bit of negative Quotes[/footnote]

This boils down to making a Post saying "I have nothing to contribute to the topic at hand", and is little more than posting to raise one's Post Count, or perhaps trying to get a "First!".

Maybe somebody requesting a thread to be bumped, but one of the "Bumpers" has nothing to post in said thread, but wanting to bump it anyways.

All I could think of, good luck figuring it out.

Yeah, it's mostly to bring up their post count. I've seen people post in topics about certain games where they say "I've never played this game, so I don't know." and then they leave.

I think those posts should be counted as "tl;dr" posts and one should be punished for them.

Because when someone asks you a question, you don't stand still and not answer.

Person 1: Did you like Movie X
Person 2: *Backs away slowly*

Because debating the relative flaws and merits of a game is by far amore interesting disscusion than alot of people going "Yeah that game sure was fun.". It makes you think more and is more productive.

Those guys are as bad as people who go on to forums about consoles they don;t own and just reply "nooooooooo that sux. xbox ftw. lolololololololololololololoololololololool". I think people do it because they think that either:
1. they think everyone wants to know their opinion
2. they feel like going to a forum is a waste if they don't post something

I sometimes fall into the later but catch myself before I post.

This is true. It's been scientifically proven that the higher your post count the bigger you penis.
Seriously? Because then that would mean that posting in this thread...

I think the point here is that people who post on topics with nothing to say are not voicing their opinion. obviously, that is the whole purpose behind this, but to post on a thread and say "I've never played that game/saw that movie/heard of that before" doesn't really qualify as voicing an opinion. all you are saying at that point is that you have nothing constructive to say and are just making yourself look foolish. then again, this is the internet, and after porn, looking stupid is the next best thing about it.

This, or because they are so egotistical that they need to post on everything because their opinion has serious weight, and everyone has to hear it. Even if they know nothing about the topic, or anything about the game, or whatever...everyone must hear their opinion on it.

Either way, it just seems to be a nasty case of insecurity.
