ok so you got civilization 5 free with xcom ? have you played it yet or is it just another game added to your backlog ?

I'm pretty sure most pre-order... -ers are the kind of people who are slowly and completely destroying gaming and games.

"HEY! We will pay you anything for any piece of crap without any question! Why would we need to ask you for anything in return? We don't need any quality-control or content what so ever!"

This is the message those kind of people like to send. Content and great stuff like devkits is actually being frowned upon. Every game released needs at least 5 patches before they even get somewhat playable.

i completely agree with you

I thought that was obvious, some people like to make sure they get the game the day it's out. Or in the case of some Special Editions you want to make sure you get it at all. I don't preorder games often, last one I can recall getting a preorder on was ...Mass Effect 3, it's not like that game's special edition would be around after the first day would it?

And on steam they let you preload so that's a decent reason I'd say.

I don't know. I have never preordered a game in my life , and i have about 300 console games ( iv'e played more ). Sure i know i will by every final fantasy game , but still i woouldn't preorder one . I think preordering is a pretty dumb thing to do , UNLESSS you know you are a fan and will buy a game on day1 regardless. Even then i don't preorder.
i share the same mentality

Only time I will ever pre-order these days is if there is an art book involved. I love looking at concept art. Seeing how an idea progressed and grew and reading artists elaborations on their work. What the idea was, why it changed ect. But I have even learned now not to even bother with those seeing how the amount of concept art is minimal and most of it you likely saw online already.
Otherwise...come on there isn?t really any game coming out these days that you won?t be able to buy normally off the shelf like all us mortals on day one or two or three or a month from release.
even if the game turns out to be shit ?

for me..

if its a multiplayer game and my firends are going to get it
and pre-order loot

GTA5 will get this treatment

but i don't pre-order often. anyway i have been thinking of these deals below

(360)bioshockI looks amazing and comes with, premium ed ($99)
art book
lithograph print
3 power ups (digital of course)
handyman figurine
murder of crows key chain

but its single play only, so your hoping that it has replay value

(360)pre-order TOMB RAIDER ($79) and get
well, combat-strike package dlc

(ps3)the last of us ellie edition ($114) and get
(physical)

mini art book
comic book
a new skin for your ps3 controller (ellie)
screen print effect poster of ellie

(digital)
soundtrack
2p sn avatars
new ps3 theme
Ellie skin sackboy
and a bunch of multiplayer benefits

so what do you guys think i should choose? if any
seriously ? a skin , a theme , an avatar , a soundtrack ? those are all poor deals. to just sucker you in to invest in the game. so do yourself and the industry a favour and dont pre-order. these bonuses are not reason enough to pre-order if the games turns out to be not good

Reasons why I've done it:
- I knew I was going to get the game and play it the second it game out, so why not?
- It was cheaper to preorder (sale on Steam, coupon codes on D2D, etc.)
- I wanted a collectors edition (Borderlands 2, BioShock Infinite)

Only games I really buy anymore are ones I know I'll play the second they are released (because I barely have time as it is to buy games and have a huge backlog), so might as well just preorder them.
there in lies the problem. if you were planning to play the game on launch anyways whether the game was actually shit then you are harming the industry indirectly. you may not realise it. watch this

Seeing that it is from TotalBuscuit, your post just lost any credibility to me. Problem with him is that he gives his opinion on a game, and the people who praise him unconditionally will take his opinion as fact and bash a game just because he doesn't like it without having ever trying it or attempting to think for themselves. So anyone who gives a reason to why something is good or bad, or why you should/shouldn't preorder games and just leave a link to one of his videos, I ignore it completely.

But anyway, judging from the rest of your post, I'm guessing it is about how by preordering you are buying crap and showing that people will pay for crap? To go with my above remarks, did you even read my original post? I'm going to buy the game on launch anyway. If reviews say it is bad or not. All reviews are opinions, so who are they to say if a game is bad or not? My taste seem to be a lot different anyway. For example, I won't touch another BioWare game again since they are some of the most bland and boring games I've ever played (Mass Effect [1], Dragon Age: Origins). On the other hand, I really enjoyed BlackSite: Area 51, Dirge of Cerberus, Brink, Rage, and other games people say are horrible. Only game I ever preordered that I disliked was Zombie Driver.

thats stupid. those days of limited stocks are long gone so there's no excuse
So are you just sitting around on this thread to attack anyone who doesn't agree with your TotalBiscuit's opinion?

I can think of a few reasons to pre-order.

Just recently, Fire Emblem: Awakening came out and I sincerely wish I had been able to pre-order that game due to the extremely limited release. This same logic applies to many games that are likely to see a limited release; you pre-order them so you know that there will be one in stock just for you on the release date.

Also, these days there seem to be a lot of pre-order perks. Most of these are purely fluff like an extra gun or a piece of physical merchandise. These are mostly BS perks but I can see why some people would fall for it. Hell, I still own the Scribblenauts hat.

Mostly, pre-ordering should be done to circumvent any possible lack of stock. It should also be done with the utmost caution as, like the OP said, you don't have the benefit of user reviews.

Best way to hedge your bets with pre-orders? Only pre-order games that are re-releases.

Oh no, I have to first be interested in the game (in case you though I was just preordering anything that came with an art book) and then, be absolutely certain I am going to enjoy the game first before I dare even think about preordering it. The last time I did that was with Mortal Kombat boy did I get burned with that art book *sigh* Hence why I rarely even take the art book bate these days seeing how most of the time it?s 15 pages of not a whole lot.

Sometimes the pre-order bonuses are really good. With Ni no Kuni, I got the Wizard's Companion Book. Hell yeah! At least, I think that was a pre-order bonus.

Also, I can only read a tiny amount of Japanese so I will probably have to find someone to read it to me. Still, I believe that it completely justified the pre-order.

Simple and dandy
Retailers simply reserve a copy for a first day buy
Digital its simply a money grab

There are a small handful of duds every now and then that aren't as great as I may like, but with few exceptions, the pre-loading for PC games is worth the risk by itself. The random pre-order skins/weapons/whatever they offer will be on steam for a few dollars if the game was any good later on, so that's not an issue.

To simply put it, I am a sucker for those special/ limited (figures, special game case, OST CD and etc) editions that you can get ONLY if you preorder.

Most of the time the preorder has been justify (by all means I won't preorder if if the total cost is alot like if the preorder come with a statue with it).

To guarantee a copy, and sometimes to get a pre-order bonus. I also like the feeling that the game is already purchased, and I don't have to worry about it that anymore. I also do it to show support.

That being said, I rarely pre-order to due lack of money. Also, since most of what I play are JRPGs, the game has already been out in Japan for some time before getting announced, so I have a bit more to go off of besides just trailers and demos. When I pre-ordered Tales of Graces f, I already knew pretty much what to expect, in terms of game play, when I got it. It also came with a pre-order bonus when I got it from Gamestop. I was adamant about pre-ordering it because I really wanted to help to show that there was an audience for Tales games here in the States, in hopes of getting more localisations.

Also, not every game is available on digital distribution, many games are physical only, so yeah, limited stock is still a completely legitimate excuse.

I used to pre-order games, when physical copies were the only copies of games. It was inevitable that stores wouldn't get enough supply to meet the demand for big releases, and I wanted to ensure a copy on release day. Made sense back then.

I also used to pre-order games if they had something cool as a pre-order bonus. Best Buy in particular used to give out nifty stuff for pre-orders like t-shirts. I still have t-shirts for Max Payne 2, Deus Ex: Invisible War, and a few other games that I got as bonuses from them.

The thing is, though... back then, pre-ordering a game was just $5. These days it should be called pre-buying. Back then, I could put $5, then pay the rest upon release. If it turns out the game is a flop, I'd only have to eat a $5 loss - no biggie - and I'd get to keep all the stuff that came in the pre-order bonus package. Hell, you could have probably made back the $5 loss by selling the pre-order stuff on E-Bay or whatever back then. I'm sure someone out there would have paid $5 for a Max Payne 2 shirt.

These days I rarely pre-order, since I don't like the idea of pre-buying. I still do it from time to time, but I restrict it to releases that I'm fairly certain of the quality. Despite my massive fanboyism toward the Aliens series, I didn't pre-buy A:CM. I did, however, put money down on a copy of StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm because I'm fairly certain of what level of quality I can expect. I try to choose it on a case-by-case basis, rather than just pre-ordering/buying everything I'm interested in. It would take some seriously awesome pre-order/buy bonuses to get me to go that route. Bonuses that are unlikely to exist, 'cause it's the t-shirts and stuff from the 90's/early 00's that I personally miss.

For me it's a case of availibility. I like a lot of games that don't get a lot of devoted shelf space if they get any at all and sometimes it's the only way to get them. For example, I preordered Etrian Oddesay 4 recently because a dungeon crawler grindfest probably won't be around even on launch week, let alone 2 months from mow. I din't preorder Metal GEar Risging because I'm reasonably sure there will be copies to spare. So yeah, I preorder primarely for niche titles, limited editions (if the goods are there), anything for a system being phased out, stuff like that.

Then of course there's the thing I have about not taking reviews as gospel. I've liked games that have been panned by critics. I've hated games praised by critics. I prefer to make up my own mind and while reviews have a place, usualy if I had interest prior to launch, it's rare that reviews change that interest even in the slightest.

Ni no Kuni is animated by Studio Ghibli, Made by Level 5 and the preorder comes with the entire spell book. I would have been crazy not to buy the thing.
