lately i've been browsing youtube and various forums and i've been noticing lots of people putting weird little signitures at the bottom of their comments, i just think its useless since we can already see who they are anyway from the name next to the comment.

-AshPox <<<< thats what the signatures look like, pretty useless, is there actually any point to putting that there?

In attempt to look sophisticated by undermining your intelligence by daying you can't read those letters right above the picture.

They want to reiterate that they wrote the above passage and that they believe you, the reader, are far too dense to read their name next to what they wrote so they have to actually leave their name inside of the text. Its all a form of self preservation. Or maybe they just really really like to type billyjoekins635 (fake name? who knows.)

It helps to identify themselves if they have no avatar. Plus, sometimes it looks spiffy.

Agreed.

I can't tell you how many advertisements and links I saw as signatures

It will only be a matter of time before they see the light and come to the dark side.

In case something needs restatement over and over again.

Yea, then again there is only about 10 people over at warcry at any give time.
True, but Warcry doesn't have Yahtzee or the guys from Unskippable to reel in people.

I don't know, maybe it's because they want people to know for sure who posted it.

Nah it's because it was an almost one word post (or do names count as only one word? hmm).
Anywho, I think signatures are the most annoying thing in forums (that are allowed on forums anyways). See no reason for them other than killing people's browsers.

How would you know if the poster was the real poster if they didn't? Someone could've hacked someone and be under their name. Presenting a signature prevents this.

Some people put the name, I dont mind it, I object to MASSIVE BANNERS you get on other forums.(see below)

Warcry is a good example (although i do like the warcry community)

A prime example.

People want their opinions noticed. Everyone appreciates it when they are recognized and quoted, or at least mentioned. Even a day in the sun is rewarding enough for some such users, and even more get addicted to that sort of Quasicharismatic euphoria.

I might be able to argue that in the "Olden Days" of the Escapist, the community was able to maintain itself due to none of anyone wanting to monger attention for themselves, but because they had a genuine interest in other people's opinions; the epitome purpose of a forum.

It may or may not be a vestigial remnant of the time when people had to actually write their name on all the non-verbal communications they made. They'd have to write the address of the recipient, their own address (for return or a response), place their crest or insignia, and even write their own name.

Like many other non-essential aspects of human culture and nature (tattoos for children, eating a proper meat-filled diet, dying around age 40), this trend is in a slow decline as human beings as a whole begin to reach my level of arrogance and patronizing of those whose opinions differ.

And, well, once (if) you ever go into the working world (or to school), you will encounter documents that need you to write your name twice to confirm that you were, in fact, the one who wrote it. Not that anyone normally checks the signatures unless something else seems out of place. Which is actually quite a lot like posting a message on the internet, where your name is already in place.

I used to put a signature on the end of my e-mails and posts purely for narcissistic reasons. Kinda like how people like to listen to the sound of their own voice. In fact, that's the exact same thing.
