It ensures the name won't be taken. You can take the most generic name you want, but if you add on enough X's it'll be open.

They probably do, just like they put MLG to pretend they are a Major League Gamer. It just looks annoying if you ask me.
This is probably the most hated thing I have ever seen. Thankfully I don't see it anymore because the MLG hasn't spread into PC gaming except for WoW.

I hate that more than anything in gaming.

Your tag is taken, get an ounce of creativity and make a new one, don't tack on random x's.

People put different combinations of X's before the main content of the tag and then reflect it on the other side so that the X's are almost like graphics and (theoretically) you get whatever tag you wanted in the first place, but was already taken.

Say your name was Marcus and you wanted the gamertag "Marcus" but it was already taken. You'd put xX Marcus Xx or xXx Marcus xXx.

Their favorite tags are already taken so they just have to add some symbols so they can use it.

At least I tell myself that so I don't go assuming anything bad right off the bat.

I'ts one of those things people do for one of a couple reasons.

1. Their preferred name is actually taken, and they are not creative enough make up something other than adding random numbers or X's.
2. They want people to think them "cool", which would probably signal something psychological where they want attention and to be accepted.
3. They're just dicks. Yes, many people are just idiots. True fact.

X is an uncommon enough letter than we can psychologically separate it, seeing it as a symbol, or separator, like an underscore. Rather than as a letter. So it allows them the have their gamertag if it is already taken by merely adding symbols.

Then again, some people are just douchebags.

Does it really matter? I've done it to for no reason, people just do it because.

But it isn't unique. It's annoying, and causes me to misread what their name actually is when they join a lobby.

I feel your pain. They THINK its cool, but it often makes them look unintelligent and i would say childish. Often enough the gamertag is bad enough. My sister's gamertag is horrible, Fenix Wingz is bad enough without the xX.

Because most gamertags are taken... and people dont want stupid numbers after there nickname or dont really want to start a new online identity.

Simple answer.

But numbers can mean something to you.
Example: your birthday or independence day or the year WWII started. I mean x's just seem idiotic and silly, but maybe I'm just ranting.

Because they don't realize the conitations it used to have with Hardcore music and being straight edge in the past.

Plus the name they wanted is taken and putting numbers after it is stupid. If the game will let me I usually put -these-, .these., or even ^these^ around my name if it'll let me.

Because people might have their name already taken, and can't think of anything else. That's why I use AngloDoom - no-one has the name. However, there's a 'coolguy37' where-ever you go on teh interwebs, and I doubt they are all the same guy. So, someone who is thirty-seven years of age and is so insecure he must be recognised as 'coolguy' by strangers to have the strength to get up in the morning, might stick an 'x' at the front or back of their name to have their desired screen-name.

Then, people will put multiples or make it vaguely symmetrical because we are mostly picky creatures like that. So, our 'coolguy37' has become 'xcoolguy73x'. Notice, he not only looks insecure, but thoroughly gay.
