To be fair I'm 5 episodes in. I am enjoying it, but it is by no means a masterpiece like i hear it is. For example anime news network has it in their top 10 anime list.

What is so special about this show?

Diversity, bro.

Bebop is one of those rare finds that stretches all across the emotional spectrum. Every episode is, literally, russian roulette. It could be largely comical (Mushroom Samba,) disturbingly dark (Pierrot Le Fou,) or even uncomfortably isolating (Toys in the Attic,) and it plays off of these so well.

Maybe it's the fact that it feels like a long, arduous odyssey rather than just a series of events slapped together that draws people into it.

I know I'm one of 'em.

Its the only anime I think is watchable. According to wikipedia it has almost universal acclaim. Starwars wasn't that great but look how it is recieved. How do you get on probation. Ive been trying but so far no luck.
I always get on probation for stupid reasons, like the mod saying that i didn't read the op when posting, when I did, and even though my post was completely related to the subject at hand.

It's an anime that has as few anime tropes as possible, which makes it watchable to me (Though "Ed" makes me cringe).

It is also very well written, has good english actors, and is about Bounty Hunters IN SPAAAAAAAAAAACE.

EDIT- I should note that Bebop is one of only three anime shows that I have ever actually "liked", so I'm no expert on the subject. Hell, by anime-fan standards it may suck, but by "people who enjoy watching good television" standards, it was pretty enjoyable...except "Ed". God that kid was annoying.

Wait until the final episodes of Cowboy Bebob and then you'll see what the big brouhaha is. I can't believe that you lack faith in Cowboy Bebob, that show is right up there with Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Avatar: Last Airbender, Ghost In The Shell and even Akira the animated film in terms of quality. It is an epic space masterpiece with tons of western themed shootouts and dogfights. You upset me when you doubt such shows, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this post.

Personally, I have no idea what makes it the "greatest anime evar!" that people make it out to be, but I did thoroughly enjoy it when I finally got around to watching it a few months back. As a series, it does almost everything right. As for why I don't consider it to be anywhere near my favourites, well, it may do everything right, but it's more a "jack of all trades and master of none". Other series have characters I like more, stories I find better, humour I find more entertaining, action I like better and so on.

Also, Ed. I don't like her and I never will. JUST FUCK OFF YOU WICKED AND VILE CREATURE!

What it attempts to do it does very well. Characters are likable and have a sense of depth to them. Universe is thought out and explained, pacing is good and everyone can find something they like

It was one of the best shows in my childhood. I grew up watching Mobile Suit Gundam (Original, Z, G, SEED, etc.), Outlaw Star, and our beloved Cowboy Bebop. Cowboy Bebop didn't have those dreaded, "fillers", and the writing was superb. It basically became our universal comparison.

To Narrow down my problem a bit more, here it is. I don't like how each episode is a separate story. I find that the best part of anime is that they can tell a story better then a movie because they can flesh things out, and not drag on for hundreds of episodes with no real story with an end like most TV shows.

Though some anime are like this, namely the most popular like Naruto, Dbz, Bleach. etc
I've never actually gotten into any of them except i got into Naruto for about 40 episodes and gave up because it was endless patting.

Its one of those storys, ya know the ones im talking about

They start off slow but still interesting as you go along you see things you like and others you don't but the bad stuff is never enough to push you away from liking it. Then you have some sort of amazing ending that just makes you feel like you knew it would work out that way followed by the worst thing that could ever happen to the one person you kinda knew it would happen to but didnt want it too...

And then it ends with one word that when i hear it still gives me slight shivers...

This is a personal experiance haha i wouldnt take it too seriously

But narrow it down to what you specifically stated about each ep being a separate story just give it some time it dosnt make sense at first but it eventually weaves togeather to where there are very few loose ends (at least i thought so maybe it was just me seeing the connections)

Erm... how can you judge it 5 episodes in?

Anyway, like others have said, it's the best because it is entirely unlike the rest. All the other animes stretch on endlessly (and needlessly) for hundreds and hundreds of episodes. They beat a very dead horse for the sake of keeping the train rolling and getting more money. But Cowboy Bebop has less than 30 episodes. For this reason, every episode is a brand new experience, and nothing is needlessly dragged along. And it doesn't have to have filler arcs due to manga struggling to keep up.

It is an anime with balls. It takes balls to stray away from the usual anime set up of having nine thousand freaking episodes about the invincible protagonist tackling every powerful enemy that rises against him. It takes balls to go with a jazz-themed musical score. It takes balls to have the deep and unexpected content the episodes sometimes have. And it certainly takes balls to end the show the way they did, with no spin off or extra series.

And the movie is absolutely incredible. Absolutely incredible.

I didn't like it at first either. Actually I watched the first 3 episodes and stopped watching for like half a year. Then when I tried watching it again it was a completely different expirience and I absolutley loved it. But I was really dissapointed by the creators other work Samurai Champloo (I really liked a couple episodes of this but overall I just didn't like it).

Here is the frame that seems to capture the gist of this show's appeal for me. I hope it helps.

Each show is a jazz piece, stand alone, played by instruments.

The instruments are the characters, and we start with just Jet, and he quickly pairs with Spike, and a simple duet is formed, rhythm and bass so to speak. Faye, Edward and Ein all join in on subsequent episodes, and we have a quintet.

Each character, after they are introduced, plays along in combo with the whole, but then each gets a "solo", a show about mainly them and their back story. In Edward's case, her solo also forms her play off.

After the solos, each member drops out, and we are left with Spike and Jet, and then finally just Spike.

Fin.
