Why do people say Crysis 1 is a "generic shooter" ?

I know Crysis has always been about the graphics hype, but a lot of people recently have been saying it's just a "generic shooter" "yawn fest" "on the rails" etc. etc. like it's jut another CoD or Gears clone!!

I personally found it one of the most engaging FPS games of the past decade. Aside from the beautiful graphics, you can actually use physics to kill enemies (shooting down a tree to crush a Korean never gets old). The environments are very open and you can approach your objective in different ways.

It also has the nanosuit. This is genius because you can customise your play style on the fly. You can go from running faster than a jeep, to being a bulllet sponge, to a silent predator, to a tank who punches vehicles out of his way in a few seconds. There's also on the fly weapon modification system which lets you use your Assault rifle as a low powered sniper on the fly, or make your shotgun silenced and with a longer range.

Every playthrough of the game I've done has been subtley different - sometimes I storm a base head on. Sometimes I strap C4 to a Truck and drive through the base then blow the truck up as I get out. Sometimes I swim in and sneak to my objective.

IMO we need more games like Crysis. The plot was shit, but at least the gameplay pushed the boat out there a bit.

So has everyone been playing the game wrong, played a different game to me, or just has no scope for playing the game apart from being a cover based shooter?

Basically, any shooter will get bashed in this day and age. Doesn't matter if the game plays differently to a corridor shooter (Crysis 1, for the most part) or the history/pedigree behind it (Rage), all will get heavily criticised. Unless you're a modern arcade military shooter you're fucked, even Halo has fallen from grace.

Usually because they never played the game, which is a pity because Crysis was a fantastic game. Not just good looking but extremely fun to play as well.

Sadly it seems the vast majority at the time just dismissed the game as a pretty face and nothing more. Ah well!

I have never heard that said about Crysis. I only played the second one on Xbox but it seemed like a really well put together game, I enjoyed the multiple way's of handling each situation a lot. Apparently it was a step down from the original, sadly my computer cannot run it.

Seriously?!?! Is it toned down so that it can run or something? I was under the impression that Xbox 360 and PS3 couldn't run it at all. If it's toned down then i'd rather wait untill I eventully get a gaming PC that can run it.

It's everything but generic. It does most things differently from other shooters. And in a good way, not in useless gimmick kind of way. Nanosuit and realistic physics are integral parts of the game that make all the difference. It also had switch for full auto, burst or single shot, as well as some different ammo mods. That made it even more awesome. Also, weapon modification on the fly? That was pure brilliance!

Too bad Crysis 2 was so dumbed down. Now that is a generic shooter with gimmicks.

Crysis 2 was pretty much 1 very long cutscene with a few shooty bits. You could sneak through the entire game. Pinger boss fights were shit.

Eh, it felt pretty... well, "generic" isn't quite the right word. It felt very unimaginative.

It's a first person shooter about a US super-soldier running about in power armour killing aliens and the enemies of America. Yeah... clearly the result of true inspiration there.

About the only thing going for it was the big open levels, but it never seemed to know what to do with them. There was never any reason to explore, nothing interesting to find, no side missions, NPCs... nothing. Just you, your boring military-type objective and a whole lot of wasted space.

After a while I got bored and just cloaked and sprinted my way through the whole game.

All things considered, I preferred the sequel. Sure, the levels were tiny but at least they had some detail to them. The fact that there wasn't acres of empty forest or grassland on any side didn't bother me.

Not sure where you were going with this comment?

Anyway, HL2 is ancient to kids today. I'm surprised that you haven't noticed the amount of people bashing it in recent years. The most common complaints are boring, ugly, crap weapons (including selection method), and bad characters.

Have to agree somewhat, it was always more about the graphics than anything but the physics and large levels were a big draw too. The narrative was never spoken highly of as far as I can remember.

Because it is generic, but I have been over this so many times with everyone I know.
So I'll let you keep your dreams and say for every generic or even bad shooter there is a fanbase out there, no matter how small there will always be someone to sing their praises.

My friend says that he thinks Crysis is mediocre, but I loved it. IMO a lot better than the second one and warhead.

I don't have a lot of love for first person shooters, don't know why exactly.Probably because I prefer bashing someone's face off and ramming it into the ground, rather than pointing a shooty thing and put a hole in the skull.
Stabbing, strangling is also satisfying to me.
Reminds me why I liked the Godfather: The Game, you have 22 ways to kill a thug which doesn't just involve point gun and shoot.

There is a reason for that. The game had system requirements that rival games 4 to 5 years its junior. Its mostly going to be remembered as a pretty face because so many people could only youtube it instead of play it. Look below for example.

Crysis one
http://www.crysisdemo.com/crysis-system-requirements.htm

Minimum system requirements
from Crytek and EA

OS - Windows XP or Windows Vista
Processor - 2.8 GHz or faster (XP) or 3.2 GHz or faster* (Vista)
Memory - 1.0 GB RAM (XP) or 1.5 GB RAM (Vista)
Video Card -256 MB**
Hard Drive - 12GB

Crysis two
http://www.ea.com/crysis-2/blog/pc-specs
PC Minimum System Requirements

Operating system: Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, with the latest Service Pack

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo at 2Ghz, or AMD Athlon 64 x2 2Ghz, or better

Whoa whoa whoa. I've never said that Crysis was generic. It's ANYTHING but generic. In fact, I've always asserted that Crysis was EXTRAORDINARY.

Sure, it's rubbish. But it's EXTRAORDINARY rubbish. If there's a more tepid, irritating, creatively bankrupt game than Crysis, I've not encountered it.

Because it's your typical "Story second, shooting and explosions first" kinda shooter.

Little depth to the world, little storyline involvement, just, go here, shoot these guys.

And in doing that, it did fine. However, the PC market tends to require games that have more depth than that, so I don't recall it selling very well. Of course, Crytek blamed Piracy rather than themselves.

This is why the more "Hardcore" fans like games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Metro, the world has depth and meaning.
