Why do people say Half Life 2 is one of the best games ever made?

Another thing people haven't mentioned yet is how strong most of the characters were. The majority of them were actually really interesting and fun to interact with, which isn't even really common in shooters today.

Half life was a great game.
Half life 2 was 10x better.
8 years later and there still is no fps that comes close. Thats why its considered one of the best games ever made. Characters, storytelling, the setting, pacing, level design, innovation... Its all just on another level-

Some people really love it. Apparently it was kind of revolutionary when it came out (don't quote me on that though, 'tis hearsay). Don't let it bother you - I did for a while,
Eh, I never really thought much of half life. It seemed ok, but I could never really care enough to finish playing it over other games of the time like Jade Empire.

Also if I think PC gamer toated Half Life 2 as the greatest game of all time. So it's a quote Valve like to use quite often to promote it.

It doesn't bother me. Half-Life 2 is a great game. Personally I don't think it's the greatest game ever. But if it were to be proclaimed as such, I can accept it.
And why people think that HL2 is the greatest, isn't solely based on opinions but it's also based on the perspective people have of games and what they want to play. That's why point-and-click adventures have gone extinct with the exception of a few indie games and that's why shooters have risen to dominate the market together with (new) social games.

Well actually, I just played Half-Life 2 deathmatch, and that may lower my respect for Half-Life 2 down from "pretty good" to "worst game of all time".

The characters in Half Life 2 had actual character, which, as I recall, was rather rare in a game, at the time. Surely even that is enough to warrant it a place.

When I first played it I wondered the same thing but as I think back it is still good by today's standards in terms of story, physics and level design. Kind of fallen by the wayside in terms of graphics though.
And Alyx is hot.
