For shooters, K&M easily takes the cake.
For platformers and other such games, gamepads are better due to extra precision of the analog sticks.

I am so confused about this, as people seem to have locked their brain into "it either has to be this, or it has to be that"
I have the 360 controller for my PC. Even though I've been a PC gamer for the longest time, I got that thing because it can do something my keyboard can't, and never will be able to do without radically changing into something else entierly

See here is the thing, there is a difference between analog and digital signals. They excell at different things.
Different things is just better with different input. Mouse has accuarcy and speed, but it is terrible if you want to throttle something. As for the keyboard, it's wonderful with all the buttons, but it just can't do smooth curvy movement or adjust speed smoothly.

It doesn't really matter what you like better, the fact of the matter is that in different situations, one of the input methods is superior, but not always and not at everything.

Imo, every device should have equal support for controller AND keyboard/mouse, the fact that they are not doing that yet is just baffeling to me.

Well let's see.

I prefer KB+M for: (A)RTS, Simulation, Strategy, Hack'n'Slay, Action Adventures, Point'n'Click, Shooter, Fighting Games, RPG

I prefer Controllers for: Racing games, SHMUPS

Yeah imo KB+M is superior for most of the tasks.

I use both depending on the game and sometimes use both for the same game, like a shooter that has vehicles.

The short answer - because they don't know what they're talking about.
There's a tiny handful of situations in which a gamepad is better than a M&K, and they're not all that significant.

Both have their genres they're better at, but let's face it:

If you were crazy, crazy rich and had the money to get a team of experts to design the perfect control device for a given sub-genre, having plenty to get a different one for each and every single different control scheme,

Would you ever say "sure, that KB+M or controller is just perfect for this. It's utterly impossible a superior device would exist."?

Space 'em ups like EVE = keys'n'mouse
2D fighters = pad
Dance Dance Revolution = neither...
Guitar Hero = proprietary plastic toy
Flight sims = flight stick
FPS's = whatever IP suits the platform
Everything = personal preference

...aaaand we're done (that list can continue on to include smartphone games, various IP's designed for tablets, and so on).
Seriously, shouldn't a thread like this be a sticky? And also locked for posterity? Maybe build a monument, too, so in the future people can say 'Wow, remember when people bothered to talk about different inputs for different content, and how different people are different? How silly!'.

To be fair, you are new and didn't know(as someone else said) this and pc vs consoles tend to get people really riled up.

What it mostly comes down to in all these is personal preference. Some games I prefer my keyboard and mouse (like the Diablo and Starcraft series) some games I prefer a game pad (most platformers). Sometimes the button combos I have to do on a keyboard are harder to do for me than the ones for a game pad. But then I'm also one of those I don't have an allegiance to consoles or PC and I have a PC, PS3, 360, and a Wii (as well as a PS2 and a N64).

Razer has something called the orbweaver (which is itself a modified design they bought from nostromo or someone else years ago; EDIT: they bought it from Belkin), but it's only for one hand and is basically just a chunk of a keyboard with macro support and a thumbpad. It's not ergonomic in the slightest (and way overpriced); there just isn't any competition in the market to spur on better designs or cheaper options.

I actually use all control options depending on the game (Saints Row II for PC was so badly optimized I used to play mouse and keyboard while on foot with a gamepad ready when I got into a vehicle), but I generally default to keyboard and mouse for both precision and that both hands have direct access to more keys without shifting hand position. My hands will hurt from any control system (they are simply too big to fit comfortably), so I've never been attached to any one method for comfort's sake. I really like those things that strap onto a ps3 or xbox360 controller that remap buttons to your fingertips. I also loved joysticks, but just like the games they were made for, they are something a niche item these days.

A computer interface with the flexibility and fingertip access of a keyboard, the precision of a mouse, and the rumble and comfort of a gamepad would be great. It's not hard to see where the steambox controller came from with criteria like that.

This topic always gets people pissed off. You'd be amazed how belligerent people get over their preferred method of video game input.
Not to mention the hostility that arises from discussions of preferred game genres, platforms, and series...

In fairness, how can you possibly like someone if they enjoy slightly different things than you?

I mean, I had this friend once. Let's call him Tom. Tom actually enjoyed FPS for some reason. Now, I don't. What a conundrum, right? It totally kept me up at nights, because him enjoying something I didn't impacted me in so many ways, like....

Ow! I think my tongue got stuck in my cheek!

Because KB&M make my wrist and fingers cramp. A game pad just feels better in my hands, and it's less irritating for me.

Faster and more easily pressed and identified buttons play a part. I find it easier to do things like jump attacks, wall jumps, etc with a controller. Interesting you mention Rogue Legacy, that's one of the few 2D platformers I used a controller for. Not because of the down thrusts but the left and right dashing. For some reason my tiny brain wasn't able to parse it using the keyboard and using the left and right bumpers on a controller felt a lot better.

For shooters, I prefer the precision of a mouse.
Shmups, I favor a keyboard.
Puzzle games, I can go either way.
Hack-and-slash games and platformers, gamepad wins out.

Really, it comes down to the type of game for me.
