Some people apparently find them to be extremely fun. I myself do not, since I've never been intrested in sports whatsoever, but I have a friend on PSN that has seriously(I'm not exaggerating) played FIFA every single time I've seen him online for the past three years. No kidding. Like... For real.
Both of us play quite a damn lot too, so it's not like a few occasions.

The change between games can be pretty big if you play them every season a lot.

For example 10 was bad, 11 was good, 12 was shite! 13 I liked pretty much and 14 is new so haven't played it enough to give a statement yet.

I agree that it would be nice if they actually did every September a "yearly patch update" for maybe 10? which would change the default teams, kits and maybe upgrade the graphics etc. But that isn't going to happen, mainly due to 2 factors.
1) The games sell, why throw away all that money?
2) The amount of money the put into making each game. I mean they have the same basic idea, play football. But as the technology to make games gets better, so does the way they make the games and what programs they use. The AI, the moevement of a single limb depending on what you do. The skill sets, goal celebrations, extra stuff like the scouting networks etc.

There's a lot of changes to every game, just like with CoD, the basic idea is the same but there's always a few new maps, a new mission, new weapons, more realistic graphics etc.

And about the controlls, well 9 was different from 10, 10 was different from 11, 05 is completely screwed if you go back and try that game today. It's basically from 12 I think they have found a good default control scheme, 12, 13 and 14 are (almost?) identical. but if that doesn't suit you, you can always change them.

So no, I do not agree with the opening post of this thread but I would love to see the "annual patch" thing happening.

I think a more appropriate question would be "Why do people buy FIFA games?"
Because they enjoy playing them, just like some people buy Zelda, others CoD and some play WoW.

Come on mate, you got to give me a bit of challenge here :D

even though I have recently been put off by them....online multiplayer player games like COD and FIFA are definitely worth the money.
No matter how dumb AI is you are playing with and against other real people so there are an infinite amount of actions and strategies people use against you and you use against people. All the game has to be is moderately balanced.

I love single player games like fallout and The Last of Us but but FIFA and COD for the same price can = 100hours for a more conservative player

Look at it this way.

FIFA, Madden, and all games that fall under that category are basically Xbox/PS answer to Mario Party in a sense. Alone, they are pretty cruddy games, however with fans of similar sport they are great fun to play with and bond with other people through competition and spirit.

As such, I tend to ignore those games as a whole. However I can see their merit.

Which game introduced the "off the ball" system, which allowed you to control squad members who weren't in possession of the ball? I remember that being a pretty huge change; completely changed your tactics.

I haven't played any recent ones, though, since it was my brother who bought them. He doesn't buy them every year, but FIFA and Rockstar's suff is basically all he plays; he's more of a film fan.

This won't explain the repeat yearly buyers, but like most forms of media there will always be a market of new buyers. People have made fun of Mario and Mega Man for coming out with successive games with similar gameplay, but for one population their first game may be the third or fourth in the series, since that is what came out when they bought their first system. Some parents may buy the game to accompany a gift concole for their child, or a lad in their 30's may buy a cheap copy to go with their used system. When games like Madden and FIFA may come out with yearly titles, there is always someone who is buying their first copy.

Well, it's pretty much the only football game available on current gen stuff, isn't it?

It's a shame that EA have the market cornered on that; at least in the past FIFA had the ISS series as competition.

In fact, it's a shame that EA have the whole sports game market cornered. But what can anyone else do, going up against such huge sellers is probably a daunting prospect.

Honestly no idea. They seem pretty much the same aside from very few added features.

They just get sold to football fanatics, people who enjoy watching football but cant be asked to play it and chavs.

I have been forced to play it round friends a couple of times and I cant say I enjoyed playing much. But when I found the slide tackle button.... everything changed. I now spend %100 of my time with fifa screaming CLATTER! and flinging my poorly rendered men into the opposing team.

Why does anyone buy a sequel? It's fun and it adds stuff. Sure, it might be silly stuff to us, it might not be a lot, but for football/soccer fans, that's enough. I'm sure they would laugh at some of the games we buy, but basically you could say the same thing about CoD and get the same answer...just...just replace football/soccer with shooter.
I do say the same about COD and thats why i stopped playing them after black ops 1 whicb i played for a week before i realised it was terrible. I say the same about need for speed too and im a huge racing fan.

It just seems to me that developers of these games churn out the same crap year after year because they know people will buy it regardless. Im all for the "it aint broke dont fix it" mentality but more importantly im of the mentality of "if it aint broke dont buy a new one"
Well, CoD does get a new story, so at least that's something. But I can totally agree with you on the NFS front. Carbon was the last good one. The Hot Pursuit remake was good, but it wasn't NFS style so I don't count it.

I get a new fifa every year, but always the one from 2 years ago, ie I just got fifa 12 for a fiver and honestly, I think I made a mistake doing that.
The diffrence is negligible and the graphics havent improved that mich since fifa 10 really.

I'm not sure. I didn't think you could directly control the other players if you have possession of the ball (outside of Superstar mode) but you've been able to indirectly control them since I started playing with 2011. I could be wrong about the direct control thing though...

The FIFA games do have competition in the Pro Evolution Soccer series (previously known as Winning Eleven). I believe that except for (American) Football, each sport has a competing franchise against the EA juggernaut.

Back to the OT: I'm very shocked that people find the community of FIFA to be that bad. I've played a lot of games (28-12-8 in season play alone if you were curious) and I don't recall ever receiving shitty messages and whatnot while playing. I'd like to think I'm pretty good and I would imagine winning would open you up to more pissed off hate mail than losing...

The "Pro Clubs" system (where every player on the field is controlled by a real person) has a lot of horrible people however since if you're not perfect, they seem to jump on you and EVERYONE wants to play fucking forward whether that is their position or not. I can't stand that mode and generally will stay away from there...
