Why do people think adopting swearing into your vocabulary make you sound intellectual?

Swearing emphasizes certain points, that is a completely different aspect than being intelligent.

If someone says "thats real poopy" and someone else says "thats really s****" which one sounds more upset ?

I think you may have your sources mixed up, usually it means the opposite. To me swearing is just used to emphasize a point, or when I go off the hook at somebody to show them I'm actually really angry.

It is something that has troubled me for some time.

There was something on the BBC recently, mocking the American boy who started the 'No Cussing Club'. This led Stephen Fry (one of Britain's most famous intellectuals) to remark something along the lines of 'Anyone who sees appropriate swearing as wrong is a fucking moron.'

I can see how this relates to the topic...swearing doesn't make you seem intellectual, it just shows that you understand moderation and timing. Abusing swearing however DOES make you look ineloquent.

People think that? Round here little kids swear beacause it makes them think they're grown up and teens swear constantly because it makes them think that they're hard. Never heard of anyone who thought that swearing makes them sound more intelligent.

The only case I could think that would be true would be if the person is a 12-13 year old child who believes swearing makes him sound older and tougher.

Naturally, that isn't that case, and he's just going to get muted.

Swears enphasize points, being intellectual is elequantly insulting someone horribly without need for swearing e.g's:your as sharp as wet leather or your eye's are as good as a badger with cateracts.

No. It makes you seem like less of an uneducated and impolite prick. I'm not smart, and will readily admit that. But keeping your posts tidy shows that you have respect both for yourself and for the people who may read what you have written.

OT: I haven't heard of this.. Where I come from, swearing is perceived as slightly immature and not at all intelligent.

It doesn't, and the people who routinely swear know this. People adopt swearing into their vocabulary because it makes them sound aggressive and filled with testosterone, and testosterone is a powerful attention-grabber.

On the other hand, thinking that using proper grammar and spelling and avoiding dirty words are the sole tickets to the train of intelligence is also stupid.
