Why Do People Think Art is Only Painting?

In my opinion, is because paintings and the like are the most prevalent form that's presented as art. People like pigeonholes, and stuff like games and movies fall into "entertainment" more often than "art". Stuff that is presented over time (movies, games, music) distract from the "thinking about art" mindset, whereas a picture sits there and lets you contemplate it.

Meh thought art was just something that served no other purpose but to look pretty/entertain.

Okay I'm from a part of the country where people are outnumbered by cows 5 to 1 and I've NEVER met anyone (who's actively) voiced an opinion saying that. At the very least they also recognize sculpture, dance, architecture, story, and photography. That's basic, If you actually converse with someone about it pretty much anyone will say those things are art.

I think claiming people don't recognize that is something people project onto 'ignorant' folks so they can feel smart or more cultured what have you.

The thing is art, no matter how you slice it, art comes down to opinion, so if they don't agree with you it doesn't mean they're wrong.

Would you call this art?
Those ignorant folks sure do.
Yes I would call that art. I'm close to agreeing with you. I think what is and what isn't art is objective, but what "good" and "bad" art is, is entirely subjective.

I am surprised, however, how many people immediately start talking about art and video games as though the visual aspect is all that qualifies it as art. They talk about the graphics, or the visual design, but many people never mention things like story, atmosphere, or music. "Art" seems to be, in these people's minds, restricted to things like painting, drawing, and perhaps photography; visual design in general, I suppose. It's like they took art class in grade school and never graduated beyond that stunningly simple and incomplete vision of what the word "art" actually includes.
I think this is more about a flaw in the English language than an issue about art itself.

Things like sculpture, music, creative writing and painting are all forms of art. However, typically paintings and other visual images are called "Art". For instance, when you go to an art exhibit, you expect to see pictures, not a bunch of actors performing say, Macbeth, even though they are actually exhibiting art.

This means than whenever you ask someone about art in video games, they first think of the visual aspect of the video game. Although, after some further consideration i'm sure few people will disagree that music and plot are also aspects of art. It's just because of the typical meaning ascribed to the word "art" that we first think of visual images.

Because, for some extremely depressing reason, general culture is around 150 years or so behind the art world.
They people who claim this also tend to insist that impressionism is bullshit, and we're right back to the 1800's in the Salon.

Also, the amount of people who are so adamant on their position on art when they have spent next to no time considering the topic or what is going on now or throughout history in the art world makes me so peeved.

I agree entirely. The definition of "art" is tough to pin down, but I think it's straight-up laziness to just take that and say, "Well, it must mean whatever you want." There's no point in even having the term if it doesn't mean something general, at least, even if we can't necessarily pin down all the specifics.

Art to me is anything that makes you feel or think. When I look at a painting, I often wonder to myself "What was the artist thinking when they did this?" or "Why did they use paint/ pastel/ clay etc?" There have been times when painting has brought out emotions.

It applies to films, video games, books everything really.

This is just my opinion though.

Because for many intents and purposes, Art is meant to challenge people's expectations, and a challenge isn't a challenge if everybody passes.
