Morrowind: amazing atmosphere, horrid gameplay.

Sorry guys. I don't mind getting my ass kicked by some horror when I'm level nothing, but if it takes me fifty swings to hit a rat for the barest fraction of its health, well, that just doesn't fly.
I think you're underestimating the fighting ability of rats. You've clearly never lived in NYC

Many things have been said positvely for Morrowind, one thing that has great was all the unique weapons and armour. Unlike Oblivion where bandits eventually wore Daedric armour, there was in fact one of certain pieces in the whole game world (fixed by Tribunal and Bloodmoon).

Plus you could abuse the heck out of alchemy, enchanting and certain items, and make yourself an invincible superman running super fast and jumping mountains.

I liked the simpler system of Oblivion because I hadn't previously been exposed to Morrowind, maybe if I had I'd be raging in favor of Morrowind just like you. I'm getting a good picture of why a lot of people liked it more, which was the intent of this post. It's honestly starting to seem like a "you had to be there" sort of thing, haha.
The possibility had occurred to me yes. /:> Older titles do tend to experience such among more contemporary audiences. I know for certain that a full appreciation of the depths of Bungie's Marathon would be lost on most people newly introduced to it these days. Unless of course they were fine with a lot of reading and Doom-era sprite-based fps graphics...

But I digress.

Morrowind to me has always just felt more genuine and immersive than Oblivion did. Cyrodill just felt so...contrived by comparison. Contrived is really about the best word I can come up with for it. Like someone -tried- to make a TES game, but got it wrong for a lack of feeling for universe they were writing in...
I would say though that the Shivering Isles DLC was a bit more to my liking, however..Parts of it actually reminded me of Vvardenfel while it also had plenty of its own originality and color.
