Why do people want Ridley to be playable in Smash?

So, Sakurai revealed recently in an interview the reason why Ridley is not playable. For those not willing to click on the link, he said it was because he couldn't make a character faithful to the actual Ridley work as a playble character. His size, proportions, and style makes it hard for a playble Ridley to be possible. Of course, fans HATED this. Some even calling Sakurai a hack or "the George Lucas of Gaming". One even had the gall to say that Sakurai didn't work hard enough. Because him literally working himself to poor health isn't good enough, Smash fans would want him to die working on Smash.

If you can't guess, I'm a bit bitter at the Smash community, but that isn't the topic of this thread. The topic here is this: Do you think Ridley should be playable in Smash? Why or Why not?

Why does Ridley even have "fans" so to speak. It's just a dragon that goes "Roar, Samus I gunna eat you lol".
He doesn't even really look the same between games. I honestly never found Ridley to be that memorable, nor the fights to be that great. He's just kind of a lame villain to me.

Outside the manga he barely even has a character.

Yes, I know ROB and Mr.Game and Watch are in the game and also have no actual personality; but whatever.

People want Ridley because they want a new Metroid character in Smash. They say that Metroid doesn't get enough representation in Smash and that more characters should be offered. This completely ignores the fact that most Metroid bosses are designed to be these gigantic monsters that wouldn't work in Smash. But that doesn't stop the whining that is the Smash community.

I absolutely agree that Ridley would be an extremely hard character to scale down enough to be a fun playable character while retaining the impact of Ridley in the Metroid series. However, it would be hilarious playing a character model with like 5 times the reach, breath attacks, a character model 3 times larger than everyone else, severely reduced knockback, and the ability to fly like a hawk in a Smash Bros. game.

To be honest it kinda confused me when people called for it. Think of all the characters they could pool from and they chose one of the least interesting to harp on about.

Are there many more staple characters besides Samus anyway? She shows up twice in the roster.

Well, there's Dark Samus and the hunters from Metroid Prime, but even then the list is very short.

I don't know why Sakurai didn't just put 8-bit Ridley in as some sort of move in Duck Hunt Dog's arsenal.

I think it would be a glorious troll. And it scales Ridley down enough to fit in the game!

Well I would favor any of the other bounty hunters from Metroid Prime Corruption over Ridley in Smash to be honest.
I like Ridley as a boss and this new way he is in the game, as a sort of "smash attack" is pretty cool and seems interesting and good enough for me.

The size argument against it makes no sense. Bowser is scaled down, and you have Olimar from Pikmin who should be maybe an inch tall scaled up, there's not reason Ridley couldn't be made smaller.

That said: I don't want Ridley specifically, I'd just like another Metroid character. A space pirate or another hunter like Rundas from Prime 3 would do. It's one of Nintedo's old franchises, up there with Zelda and yet it has one character.

I agree with you completely on how he's used in the new game, it's enough for me to do with him. I just want another Metroid character.

Well, I know a lot of Metroid fans find the Ridley fight near the end of Metroid Prime to be the best boss fight in the whole series. He also has a lot of history with Samus, which automatically makes him a favorite among Samus fans.

Anyways, Sakurai's response is entirely understandable. When people started calling for Ridley, my instant reaction was a major "How in the world would that work?" As much as I love Metroid, and by extension Ridley, he would work much better as an alternative to Master Hand than as a playable character. If we're going to have another playable Metroid character, at least make it Rundas.

To be fair, Bowser's size has changed a lot over the years, and his size actually isn't that different than it is in some of the Mario sports games.

I mean, there's various hunters, and space pirates, and the fact that (like Bowser) Ridley has been smaller
And there's always the fact that a game Sakurai worked on got better representation and even a clone character
And the fact that of all the characters Nintendo has in their arsenal that haven't appeared in Smash yet, Duck Hunt Dog made the list
I mean, I don't care that much personally, but I could see why other people do

His size isn't that different because they scaled him down for the sports games

I came to this thread just to say cool Rundas is, pun intended.

As for my opinion on Ridley, as much as love him and what he represents in the Metroid universe, even I've come to terms with him never being in. So I can get where fans are coming from, wanting a staple character in, but for christ sake making him smaller won't change the fact that he's supposed to be GIANT ALIEN DRAGON PIRATE LEADER. Unless you use the 8-bit sprite of him, there's no way he should ever be shrunk because to me it's demeaning to what makes Ridley, Ridley. And this is coming from a guy who's loved every boss fight with him (minus Other: M's for obvious reasons).

I'm honestly more saddened by the lack of Metroid characters. Dark Samus got shafted into an assist trophy even though THE MOVESET IS THERE, and Rundas may have had only one game appearance, but he was backed up by the most memorable appearance, boss fight, theme song, impact, decent size for a fighter and THE MOVESET WAS THERE. Hell i'll take any of the nobody hunters from Hunters at this point.

Just put someone from Metroid that is NOT Samus into the game... except for Adam. I'd take and SA-X clone over Adam... who is also Ada- GODDAMN IT...

I think it's mostly just a desire for more Metroid in Smash. Or just more Metroid in general, since it's been pretty light on the ground in recent years.

Ridley also is one of the iconic characters of the series and, according to the backstory, the main antagonist. Also, in the very first Metroid, he was just a regularly-sized enemy, so I guess maybe things could be stretched a little to fit him in to Smash.

Of course, plenty of other characters would likely be more appropriate, I think. One of the Pirate Commandos, Dark Samus, or Rundas, or maybe one or two of the other characters from Hunters.

Ridley is a Space Pirate Commander who is also a fucking dragon-dinosaur in fucking space.
That's why people want to play as him.

You quoted the wrong person somehow, I never said anything about sports games XD

I think he meant to quote you in the part above my post. And I agree withe Scootinfroodie, they change it to what they need it to be. I also pointed out Olimar from Pikmin, you should barely be able to see him, so size changes are made on a drastic level. But, like I said, I don't care for Ridley in particular, I just want one of my favorite and one of Nintendos oldest franchises to get more representation.

And yet look at what happened to Bowser and Gannon.

There is no reason why Ridley shouldn't be scaled down. His ultimate smash can bring him back up to his true size and let the player control him that way for a while.

[shortened for your convenience]

I'm honestly more saddened by the lack of Metroid characters. Dark Samus got shafted into an assist trophy even though THE MOVESET IS THERE, and Rundas may have had only one game appearance, but he was backed up by the most memorable appearance, boss fight, theme song, impact, decent size for a fighter and THE MOVESET WAS THERE. I think Rundas would probably be the best choice as a fighter without a gimmick, just a good solid moveset combining close- mid- and long-range. Though it might be fun to see the other two hunters from Corruption as well. Ghor (the cyborg) could work similar to Samus from SSBB, being a big slow tanky thing that breaks down into a light, fast fighter on command. Gandrayda (the shapeshifter) could work somewhat like Kirby, being able to copy other fighters, or she could have a combination of reduced movesets built into one character (via transformations) like the Pokemon Trainer from SSBB.

What it boils down to is the time and effort of actually making and balancing a fighter, then integrating them into the game (which, if I may remind people who are complaining, is already essentially finished barring the one DLC character that's already been announced). I can understand it and honestly I ain't even mad. Yes it would be nice to see more representation for Metroid (and Zelda by the same argument of it being a venerable franchise), but I'm not complaining. I;m rather happy with what we have. (Though I think Samus could have ditched the jet-boots and borrowed Bayonetta's revolver-heels instead, that would be awesome...)
