Why Do So Many People Hate the Police?

My grandfather was a police superintendent (second highest rank here) during the 1980's, a pretty shitty time. He was shot, stabbed, and even had his most of the bones broken at one point. All this was done to him by stupid anarchist and socialist shitheads because he tried to hold the peace. People who hate the police are usually teenage morons who are more interested in drugs and 'making a statement' rather than order and safety. Most of them can't even hope to imagine the state of chaos their country would be without an organised internal defence force.

What is it about cops that gets so many people's panties in a bunch? If someone is willing to risk their life everyday to keep me safe, then I'm going to damn well support them, but I seem to be in a shrinking minority, especially with people in my age group and younger (20-30 and under).

Please enlighten me on why you believe (or don' believe) that cops deserve our support.
I'm fine with cops in general, the ones here are more interested in fining drivers than anything else though. People here tend to refer to them as a legalized gang. (Not my personal view, however they are often quite useless)

Think about the people who become cops. Yes there are some who truly want to help and protect, but most are just power tripping sadists. Nobody is cop just for the money.

Because people think they're hard end of story. Oh and what they said.

This.

Essentially, there are criminals who hate them for being police, spoiled brats who hate them for being authority figures, and everyone else who hates them since it seems a surprisingly large portion of them are corrupt or simply dicks in general.

Because people remember bad events more than good ones, I've got family friends who are police officers and a friend's dad is a federal policeman, all of them wonderful people. I know local police and have a brief chat with the guys at the mandatory breathalyzer tests.

But when I think of police, I think of that annoying ***** who assumed I was on pot (or "cones" as she said) because I was leaving driving away from a public concert, eighteen years old and had a BAC of .00. Which took a long amount of time and even though I tested negative to multiple tests she still assumed I was doing something wrong.

I look at it this way. When I'm out on foot, the sight of a police officer makes me feel safe and protected from the scum that would otherwise infest the area.

When I'm in a car, I'm like "shit, a cop." The face of the law isn't quite such a welcome sight when you're the one breaking it, y'know?

So it's all a matter of perspective.
Definitely this.

Plus, it's the uniform and what we associate with anyone who wears it.

One might argue that those who "hate cops" because of a bad experience with them only hate the one particular individual (or individuals, as the case may be) and are strongly suspicious of anyone who wears the uniform.

It's like, if you were bitten by a guard dog as a child, you'd hate that one dog who bit you, and would be suspicious of similar looking dogs, if not all dogs in general.

I believe it's a survival instinct left over from when we were in the middle of the food chain.

"Oh snap! That lion just took down Bob! I'll be wary of all lions from now on. Now, back to hunting and gathering."

The police help keep you safe, that's their job, I see no reason to hate them, really - I mean, sure, they ARE human, and so like any organization, they'll have the dedicated paper pushers, glory seekers, corrupt cops, general assholes, and so forth. And if you don't like the laws, take it up with the government.

Why d'you think they take up the badge? Cause some of them do genuinely want to protect and serve. And before you cuss out a police officer, think of the shit he must've been through on his beat and realize he doesn't need some entitled civilian mouthing off. If nothing else, the cop's got the gun, so shut your mouth. :p

And for the record, I'm an Aussie, and the cops here are generally decent fellows - at least to my knowledge, seeing as how I don't get tangled up with them on a regular basis.

Because:
A) People are stupid
B) The Media likes blast every isolated case of police brutality or anything like it all over the place.
C) Rap music. Rappers are constantly slamming the police. You can't tell me that a few dipshit wannabe gangstas don't pick up on that.
D) People are stupid

We like to push the law as far as it goes, and when we do the police are there to slap us with arrests, tickets, fines etc. and instead of owning up to our mistakes, we decide to blame the person who cost us money, a few days of our lies in jail, etc.

There are bad cops out there that give the force a bad name, but having a dad as a police officer, you see what people are like around members of the law and it's rare that law enforcement is treated with actual respect by those breaking or bending laws.

At least thats my point of view.

I support the police, though I won't deny I sometimes wonder if I couldn't achieve a bit more with them out of the way...

I have reason to dislike them because they rammed into my car at 70pmh, whilst they were driving on the wrong side of the road. The polices immediate resposnse was to close ranks and blame it on me. If it weren't for the fact this was in a very public area with plenty of witnesses to cooberate my story, I think they would have gotten away with it.

Also many studies into policing show that there is a tendancy for people who display or posess sociopathic tendancies to join (or to aquire those tendancies when they join) the police. That doesn't make me feel that good about them.

So yeah, I don't 'hate' police officers. What would be the point in hating an organisation and everyone who is a part of it? They are just trying to do their jobs. Its the corrupt or incompetant ones who ruin the image for everyone else.

I think a lot of it comes from negative encounters with police officers. I myself have no problems with the Police but i do think that the job does tend to draw some people who are attracted to the power that they will wield over others and not for any noble intentions (every bullying asshole you met in high school). this small minority can colour the general perception of the force as a whole.
