Because once upon a time North American TV, Animation and Videogames kinda sucked. Hence we turned to Japan and acquired a taste for it. The End.

And for the same reason anyone obsesses over anything else.
At some level I like to think that watching more adult themed (made for mature people over kids, not porn) cartoons stimulates the mind with appropriate level material, while at the same time bringing people back to youth. Anime fills this for some people since it seems that you can only go so far with western style shows such as family guy and ren and stimpy. I agree with you on the branching out with themes concept as CG can only help live action if it is done very well. Nice Minami-ke pic as well. (Been a while since I watched that so correct me if I am wrong)masher said:I guess it's just an opinion. It's like asking "why do so many people like to read books?" or "watch movies?". I've always liked Cartoons growing up, and now, I guess I just found better - In my opinion - animations. I guess I also like how you can branch out more with something that's animated than you can with something that's "live-action". Like I said though, I think it's just an opinion or something like an acquired taste.
And no...it's not "all about the porn".
Oh shit, I guess that's true for video games too, bummer...Booze Zombie said:You could say that about anything, really.ResiEvalJohn said:This psudo Anime obsessed religion should be on its way out soon. There is good anime, but not enough anymore to glorify the genre.
Almost all art forms result in massive amounts of rubbish being made and somewhere in all that rubbish, diamonds lurk.
People can become obsessed with everything, though I think Animes just illustrate the typical teenagers mindset very well and are therefore able to draw them in easily.Continuum said:I'm just trying to understand why there seems to be so many people with an obsession over anime. I've watched things like Akira, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Ghost in the Shell amongst a few others but I just don't get the obsession. Aswell as that there seems to be many people who obsess over Japanese culture. I'm not condemning any of this (I quite like some anime myself), but I just don't quite get what is so ridiculously great about anime and Japan.
Is your pic from the Snes game? Final dimension I think its called?canadamus_prime said:I couldn't tell you. I'm only obsessed with Dragon Ball. There's just too many different varieties of anime to get obsessed over the whole phenomenon.
This kinda strikes me as ironic because I have always wondered the opposite: Why do so many people diss anime and anyone who stills likes it even after their teenage years? Seriously this past saturday me and friends went to Little Tokyo here in LA and two of my friends were seriously being assholes and dissing my other friend who wanted to visit all the shops to look over the anime and other japanese stuff.Continuum said:I'm just trying to understand why there seems to be so many people with an obsession over anime. I hear Code Gauss is on a similar level to Death Note, if you enjoyed Naruto then I suggest watching Basilisk (the only common factor being that they both claim to have ninjas, where as basilisk is more about ninjas then naruto which is about bright orange jumpsuit wearing adhd children. (PS: I watch Naruto))DirtyCommie said:I liked Death Note....
Thats it. I cant get into other animes. I know some guys who are into Naturo, I think thats pretty cool too, but to be totally honest im not up to watching 400 episodes.
i can see if you like the Japanese past, i myself love to study on there fudal era, but i hate the people that watch one anime and think they can be Japan's prime minister or somthing.Continuum said:I'm just trying to understand why there seems to be so many people with an obsession over anime. Let me ask you this, is there anything better to obsess over?Continuum said:Yes breasts are good... and so are books. But as a medium I wouldn't obsess over any one book. Some books I like some I don't. I wouldn't obsess over any one pair of breasts either - some are good, some are bad. Although I see your point.
I actually feel like some old fart being like "Why are all these youngsters so interested in their crack pipes..? I just don't get the youth of today."
Going by this, you have only viewed such a small percentage of anime. When you refer to anime as "one book" that's like saying that Excel Saga, Death Note, Pokemon, Hello Kitty, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Escaflowne, are all targeted for the same audience. Anime has romances, comedies, kid stuff, girly stuff, manly stuff, thoughtful stuff, great big action...Continuum said:Akira, Spirited Away, Perfect Blue, Princess Mononoke and Ghost in the Shell
IT'S OVER...nah, too easy.grimsprice said:They think it makes great porn.
