Why do some consider Morrowind a better game than Oblivion?

I really miss the variety of skills,
it really made morowind stand apart from other games, where everyones final character looked the same with the invincible god armor and god sword, in morowind it always turned out differently, my first character had full ordinator with curaiss of the savior's hide and a daedric tower shield that summoned a hunger to be my constant pet, and I personally forged my sword (godcleaver) myself. also the varied combat skills gave a cooler feel to the combat (bring back spears!!) and made sense, why would a thief in oblivion be able to deftly wield a claymore after leveling up with daggers? Furthermore why would he swing a dagger like it was a baseball bat? infact, why are blade and blunt seperate at all? all you do is swing them wildly until either you or your opponent falls over, I miss jumping into a group of guards in morowind and gleefully hacking and stabbing
*inhale*
*exhale*
also I liked the limits that morowind had, in that there were very few. By the end of the game my character had a constant levitate enchantment with movment sped up, a mystical shield, turned into a werewolf at will, and could cast magical fireballs whose aoe encompassed small towns, in essence I became a god, and it all happened gradually, legally over time and was extremely satisfying. and further more I'm running out of air.
*collapses*

I have no idea, I played morrowind for more than three months before i even know that oblivion is going to be released. It was a nice game but compared to oblivion..Besides it gets really really boring after a while and the whole world is just stale and empty..

I could never really get into it, because I played oblivion first and the actual gameplay mechanics in Morrowind where such a huge downgrade that it rendered it almost unplayable. Though Morrowind had a lot more variety in pretty much every aspect, so I can see why people could consider it to be better.

Because Morrowind is better then Oblivion. In every way
This, unless you prefer Oblivion (like me).

There's no mystery about it, the mechanics are actually quite different so people will prefer one or the other, as with all things.

I find the combat in Morrowind dreadful, so I much prefer Oblivion (as well as for other reasons).
Do you play it on PC or console?

PC - never found any problems to be honest. Although maybe I just found it such a relief that when I bashed something over the head it recognised that I had actually bashed it over the head.

The Morrowind combat was just so strange, like it was trying to imitate Dragon Age play/pause combat (the proper phrase has completely escaped my memory) but without the pause function, and putting you in direct control.

It just felt so off, which I guess is the problem you had with Oblivion.
Haha we had the same experiance on different games :p That's odd. Hopefully Elder Scrolls 5 will let you roam the entire land of... Tamriel? That'd be awesome
That or the place where the Nords are from, Bruma was the best town in the game. To be honest, I can't see them building an entire continent - would certainly be good though.

Heh. You should post on rpgcodex.
I believe I mentioned:
like being slapped in the face repeatedly by an idiot.
I didn't like it in Oblivion and I don't think I'd like it any more at RPG codex.

I can't believe this is even a disscusion. Even leaving aside the issue of aesthetics and more subjective ideas on the combat and storyline. Oblivion as avery badly designed game with idiotic gameplay elements that undermine it's core structure. It is a fundementally flawed game and a prime example of how not to design an RPG.

It's because it's an older game in the series, and Oblvion's gameplay system was fundamentally different to Morrowind's, thus they went into Oblivion expecting Morrowind 2.0, but instead got an entirely different game. Thus they view Morrowind as superior in the eyes of the Elder Scrolls series, due to being a more 'pure', less diluted 'Scrolls experience, as it is the older game in the series. They base their decisions off of the other games, and if the new game is not like the other games, it's not as good as them in the context of Elder Scrolls.

I tried playing Morrowind at least 3 times but every time I do I'm driven away by the awful graphics and the shitty combat. If I could somehow upgrade the graphics to Oblivions level and change the combat I would TOTALLY dive right.
NOW that would be epic.. if they released a Morrowwind DLC that used the Oblivion graphics and combat.
That would pwn all the way to the bank.
They could just remake Morrowind and its expansions completely. I would buy that in a heartbeat.
I believe there are some mod projects that plan to do that, but like most overambitious mods, they will probably fall rather short of the goal.

Personally I liked the story of Morrowind. The fact that your a reincarnated hero just facinated me.

It made me want to delve deeper in to the history of the game world. Basically it gave me more incentive to play.

Oblivion just made you play some guy/girl runnin around tryin to save the world. It didn't really feel as special.

That is a very good questiona and something that I will never understand,
I think that Oblivion is by far the best in the Elder scrolls series so far anyway.

Its called Skyrim. And Bethseda has trademarked that name, so current speculation is that that will be the location of the next Elder Scrolls (that or it'll be an MMO.)

Okay that is without a doubt a very cool thing, but it says thats a doom 3 overhaul? Not Morrowind. Still might buy Doom 3 just for that though... wow.

OT: I had Morrowind for the Xbox, Oblivion for PC. Without mods, I declare Oblivion the better game in my opinion, as I'm more of an action gamer. Looking at graphical and combat fixes for Morrowind on top of its originality, however, it is very reasonable to see people liking that game more. I may buy t for 5 bucks on the PC and play with mods. Worth it?

I had said this before:
Morrowind had a better and a lot deeper story, with a lot of parallels to real history. I also preferred the landscape, quests, and factions over those of oblivion. I was more interested in Morrowind as a whole.

However, Oblivion was a great game too.
