Why do some guys get "spooked" when girls talk to them about video games?

I work in a book store, it's a pretty simple and slow job. Just cash people out while saying hello and goodbye. Make some small chatter while ringing up some items. Once in a while some guys will come in and get a halo, starcraft, diablo, gears of war, world of warcraft or some sort of gaming comic, book, or gaming guide. So since I myself am a gamer, I try to make my day seem less boring at work by starting up some game chatter. Some will talk back others will nod their head and then grab the bag and run.

I just don't seem why they get "spooked" or what it seems like it. They give like an odd glare when you bring up a video game too sometimes.

because girl gamers are rare.

I tend to be one of the "grab the bag and run" people. mainly because i'm a bit iffy around people i don't know (unless it's on this website, of course).

It's probably because they see video games as a predominantly masculine topic, and when you talk to them about it, that enroaches on their social paradigm. This isn't true of all people, maybe they just didn't like the look of you, god forbid.

WAIT A MINUTE!!! girls play games??? I think i may have skipped a very important historical development here.

OT: I don't think it is the "Holy Crap a girl gamer" thing i think they are shocked that they found the only girl who plays games in their entire suburb.

It's probably a mixture of the facts that:

1) You're speaking to them in real life and
2) You're a lady

I wouldn't mind girls being more open about enjoying games, what I wouldn't give for an attractive girlfriend who ALSO likes games.

On a different note, how is working at a bookstore? I've considered it before.

Usually when I'm out shopping, I just want to get my stuff and move on to whatever's next. Unless an employee brings up something amazing, I'm most likely just going to nod and try to get out. An employee saying "I like halo" really isn't all that interesting. Just remember that while you're bored and stuck at work, everyone else is trying to get their own stuff done.

Try talking to a guy about video games outside of the employee/customer "relationship" and you may get a better response.

i personally still dont get why some blokes still have problems with "girl gamers".As i could understand it about 10 years ago as it was very rare to see a girl gamer online.

But now its quite common to be playing with girls also quite a few of my gaming friends are female.Come on its the 21st century people its good there are more girls gamers as it should be a win win situation.Shows our hobbie isnt just for "geeky males" and might actually show to some of the guys that women are the very similar to us instead of thinking they come from another planet.

Yeah. I bet it's just shock. "Oh shit a girl is talking to me what do I do bye" sort of thing. But most guys I talk to about gaming just talk back. They don't seem nervous or spooked or anything.
Sounds about it. Some people are just like that, either through lack of social skills, or just a lack of female contact. I've seen the same in some people at all boy schools

Myself, if someone wants to talk about gaming, that's great. So what if they're female? (In the most positive sense =P)

Well, I hope you don't mind but if a woman were to talk about the games I play (Gogo NWN2 RPing), among other things, I would be spooked...

In fact, I think I would be a little spooked if a guy started to talk to me about it.

the majority of customers freak out if you try to have a real conversation with them. You're there to be (barely) seen and certainly not heard unless they ask you a direct question, after which you fade into the background. They're fucking annoying that way.

I think the mental response I would have is something along the lines of:

Shit, a real female gamer! Shit, what do I do? Grab the bag and run, grab the bag and run!

girl gamers really aren't that rare. I have many friends on Xbox live that are girl gamers, some girls I know in RL game, including my girlfriend.

It must just be some guys who, to put it nicely, don't have a lot of experience with girls. They stereotypically think that girls are mega different from them. One of my friends is a girl and is a pretty hardcore gamer, she will play for hours at a time until late at night and I have absolutely no problem talking to her about games.
