Why do some guys get "spooked" when girls talk to them about video games?

It's not that it's a girl talking to them, it's that people just don't like talking to employees.
Bingo. I'd say this has less to do with sexism and more to do with some people in general, and maybe some gamers in particular, being a bit socially reclusive.

Rename thread:

Why do people not enjoy smalltalk?

Let alone smalltalk with an employee of a store they're about to leave.

Maybe because most mainstream 'girl gamers' (I don't see why they can't be just gamers) seem like annoying little shits but that's far from the truth, our clan leader is a girl not because she's good at the game but because we thought it would be amusing.
Also I don't talk to employees' of stores male or female as don't go to the shops for a conversation with whatever idiot works there surprisingly.

Haha I find that when I'm in a game shop, the male workers actually strike up conversations with me about games! So I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that it's probably just the fact that people feel awkward talking to workers?

I dodn't think it's because your a woman it's because they don't feel like haveing a conversation. Maybe they have something else to do.

It might be because they hate having to talk to the person behind the counter. I always find any conversation kinda awkward unless I come in there about every day.

I work in a book store, it's a pretty simple and slow job. Just cash people out while saying hello and goodbye. Make some small chatter while ringing up some items. Once in a while some guys will come in and get a halo, starcraft, diablo, gears of war, world of warcraft or some sort of gaming comic, book, or gaming guide. So since I myself am a gamer, I try to make my day seem less boring at work by starting up some game chatter. Some will talk back others will nod their head and then grab the bag and run.

I just don't seem why they get "spooked" or what it seems like it. They give like an odd glare when you bring up a video game too sometimes.

because girl gamers are rare.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/gamerchix/ yeah...rare theres even more active steam groups that have even larger communities the alrgest one ive seen is half a mil. so yeah we arent that rare :p

truth is if you have a gaming community with 10 million players and 2 million of them are girls that makes girl gamers rare. because of the % not because of the total number.

As has already been stated, it's just because you are an employee of the store they are attempting to leave. I doubt it has anything to do with gender roles or social awkwardness or anything. People just want to see clerks and employees as enemies, taking their money away from them.

Wait... what? I would NOT do this ever. If I was at a book store geeking out with some friends and this happened, I wouldn't get freaked out at all. I have so little human contact, that I'll talk to anyone, especially about games.

It's probably just that a lot of gamers tend to be shy types and they can sometimes be a bit taken aback when a girl starts a conversation. It's not that you're talking about games specifically. You'd probably get a similar reaction from them if you discussed the weather.

It's possible that there may be a degree of suspicion - there's still an (incorrect) perception out there that the majority of computer gamers are male, so when a girl starts talking games, a little wall might go up sometimes.

You can talk to me about games any time you want though, I don't have any of those issues. ;)

gaming i stereotypically a male hobby so meeting a woman that playes games is strange to them.
I'd rather say it's a stereotypical nerd hobby (exept those jocks who only play Halo 3 and Madden...Both games suck). And it's plays not playes. And that "i" should be "is".Man even the greasy turkish stereotypical foreigner knows english better than any silly american or silly english person thing...Shut Up.

On my lunch break at uni I stopped my my local Gamestation with my friend from Uni who could loosely be described as a stereotypical party girl, to pick up a copy of GH:Metallica. We were walking down an isle when she stopped and picked up DMC4 and said "Oh awesome the new one is out! I love Dante he's lush!".

I had to suppress the urge to propose to her right there. It wasn't awkward it was fucking awesome as she is one of the least likely people I'd expect to ever be into games of any kind.

Beats me, I wouldn't, I'd be slightly shocked perhaps and definatly suprised, but I'd definatly talk back. Heck maybe hang around for a few mins. I just don't understand my fellow men a lot of times.

Similar things have happened to me as well.

Back in 10th grade, during my art class we'd end up talking about anything but the class. Often, someone would bring up games and I'd always join in on it. The guys would be shocked and always asked "How do you know this stuff?" stupidly, and I'd always tell them that I play a shit lot of games and look into this kind of stuff. Eventually, they stopped flinching whenever I'd say anything about a video game and started asking me about them. (that was wicked sweet.)

Then in my 11th grade American History class, I'd always compare something the teacher said back to a video game. It came to the point that if I was to keep doing that he'd kick me out of the class & fail me. (Most often I'd be saying something about Half Life 2.)

It might be because your making them feel less lonely when talking to them about them, and as a male I normally get quite excited and fucking terrified if a girl pays any interest in my hobby's what so ever.

Same here, it'll go on forever unless I end the conversation. In my experience gamer guys are more excited to talk to women, probably because they don't get many females in the store who aren't their customers' mothers.

I'll have to agree. I usually limit counter- talk to nodding and simple stuff- "yes, no, sure I've got my ID." If the cashier has something interesting to say, I'll talk back...sometimes. Maybe I'm just an ass and should be more friendly to people in general.

Either way, female gamers tend to rock, so I can't imagine why a dude would be "spooked" by one.

I'd say it's more talking to staff in general. I get scared of the staff at Games Workshop sometimes for that very reason. I think sometimes we over interpreted friendliness for other things.

Probably because they wan't to go home, and don't really want to talk to you, but don't want to de rude. That and cashiers usually have to say something stupid by their company or ask you if you want to but something. And when you start a conversation such as "Oh, so you like gears of war and games like that" the person will usually think you're going to finish with "Well maybe you should get these games(insert generic FPS here) and also buy these microsoft points to get the DLC too. And then when they say no, they think you'll ask again(which a lot of people do). Most people just like to cut the conversation short and save some time. Also, it's probably not just 'cause you're a girl and they're video games, I see this happen all the time at Wall-Mart and Target.
