Why do some guys get "spooked" when girls talk to them about video games?

I work in a book store, it's a pretty simple and slow job. Just cash people out while saying hello and goodbye. Make some small chatter while ringing up some items. Once in a while some guys will come in and get a halo, starcraft, diablo, gears of war, world of warcraft or some sort of gaming comic, book, or gaming guide. So since I myself am a gamer, I try to make my day seem less boring at work by starting up some game chatter. Some will talk back others will nod their head and then grab the bag and run.

I just don't seem why they get "spooked" or what it seems like it. They give like an odd glare when you bring up a video game too sometimes.
Deer in headlights syndrome.

Your "average" gamer is skittish and will flee if provoked...

... I'm just kidding... but not really.

gaming i stereotypically a male hobby so meeting a woman that playes games is strange to them.
I'd rather say it's a stereotypical nerd hobby (exept those jocks who only play Halo 3 and Madden...Both games suck). And it's plays not playes. And that "i" should be "is".Man even the greasy turkish stereotypical foreigner knows english better than any silly american or silly english person thing...Shut Up.
firstly, although the mistakes you pointed out indeed wrong, they are typos, not because i'm thick. i've had to correct about 6 typos already on this post, i'm cursed with them. secondly, just for the record i'm a 'silly english person'. thirdly, all those countries need capitols; Turkish, American and English. and, finally, nerds aren't the only people that play games so neeeeer
One I did say that other people play games. Two I'm kind of still lerning English.Third I've never heard of that "Capitol Rule".Fourth you're probably one of those forum stalkers who don't have friends and yes I know you're a silly english person thing now go back to your cage. And nerds like me are the only ones I've seen being called gamers sometimes the "cool guys" would shout at my in the university "Fuck off and go play your World of Warcraft you nerd" and that's the reason I cry myself to sleep.

I've never ever done that, nor have I seen it happen.
Most guys I know think of them as just another player.

This may have absolutely nothing to do with her being a girl.

Plenty of gamers who

1. don't want to talk at all
2. don't want to talk about their hobby in public
3. simply want to leave quickly

If it was me that you were talking to, then i would probably smile and would start to talk. If there was not a line, i would hang back a bit to talk (even if it was a guy too, just for those who think that i am just doing it cause of their gender.)

Generally, when i go around shops, i go alone. Not because i dont have any friends, but because i normally go to the shops at times when friends are unavalible and crap like that. If i need something i just go out and get it. So typically i would be quiet and never have gotten talked to by randoms much before.

Those guys are probably just shy, as many others have said, and that they are not really comfortable talking in public from person to person. I guess that they prefer to not speak at all or over the net.

Never ever met a girl gamer so have no idea what would happen. Probably in my head would be the old mantra of "oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit" or "don't fuck this up".

Probably because the stigma is that girls don't play games (Please don't flame me). It's kind of like how everyone is well aware that dogs don't talk. On the offchance that my faithful Cairn (A terrier he is) Monty began discussing his philosophy on life with me I think I'd be a bit taken aback too. Then again a girl talking to me *sigh* would be great, but a gamer girl would be greater as I'd see it as something we'd have in common, so we could spend the whole conversation talking about something we find enjoyable and spend a lot of time doing rather than spending the chat nervously giving compliments about each others hair.

Actually I remember once I was at Universal studios in marvellous Los Angeles, I had just come out of the terminator show into the giftshop, at a single glance I was already amazed. Not only were there terminator things (And things for just about every fucking sci-fi movie ever made) but it was filled with gaming memorabilia, hats, models you name it. Now there is nothing like that in Australia so like a kid in a candy store I looked eagerly around. Being that Halo has always had a special place in my heart I took to the counter a little statuette (I desperately don't want to say action figure) of the Arbiter gholding an energy sword and a cap with the halo 3 symbol on it. The woman at the counter looked down at the stuff and while she was putting them into a bag she said that she really liked halo 3 and we spent that short time actually having a good conversation about it.

Maybe you're an attractive girl? And you caught him by surprise (she games...OMG!)..so his brain "overloaded".

"What do I do...what do I say?" The easiest way out of such a situation is to say nothing and leave.

They're probably pissed that you expect them to know how to talk to girls that aren't on a screen.

Or maybe they just don't want to talk to people, which is why they're buying books and games.

I dunno. If I understood men, I'd probably have at least one male friend.
Oh Maxie, we're all your friends here.

If your ever interested I'll play you in L4D or CoD:Waw. I might not win but it should be fun. Oh and it's for the 360, since my computer is used for "collage" only.

They're not at the counter to chat about games. They want to buy their shit and get home so they can play. If I went to your store and bought a book and a game I wouldn't stick around to talk about my purchase. I would want to be reading my new book and playing my new game. So if you happened to say something about my new stuff, I would probably give you a one-sentence response, nod my head, grab my bag, and run. You're not a salesperson: there's no need to say anything other than "hello," "that will be $X.xx," and "have a nice day." Just work the cash.

Because it is strange when you sit in the computer room of a University of Technology (This particular one 7% female), your Tetris ringtone goes off and only the lone girl in the room recognises it and starts talking about her Mario exploits. Very strange indeed.
Or when you have 3 girls offering you money at the same time just because you have an oldskool Gameboy. Try it, it works. But still very strange.

2: any names of people or places have a capitol letter at the start, e.g James, Rachel, France, Australia etc. good luck learning English ;)
3: i'm not a forum stalker, i do have friends and don't diss my cage!
4: those people that shout at you prats, don't take what they say to heart :)

We don't sell games at our store. It's just a simple book store. But also it is mandatory by our managers to talk up sales, make sure they found everything ok if not order it for them. But instead I would rather talk about video games instead of saying "you should by this book because your getting this title" It still seems like I'm doing my job but actually making it less about "Buy another Book" and more about fun normal conversation.
