Why do they keep making bad spider-man games?

1&2 were great. 3 was playable. you know what they had in common? an incredible, open world web swinging system. Geez, the first time i played 3, Doc Croc in one of the first missions was a giant floating exclamation point (it was patched a while after), and even after that i still played and enjoyed it more than Shattered Dimensions or Edge of Time.

There are 100 different games where you use special abilities to combat room-fulls of enemies. But i play Spiderman games to, you know, swing on a dang web. I just hope they realize that before wasting more time and money.

Disclaimer: i realize there were other things about each of the games, as well as them being made by separate companies.

TL:DR Taking web swinging out of a spiderman game is.... stupid.

If they made spiderman a mix of assassins creed and grand theft auto... With webs? Ah yeah. Get a little rpg action in there and I would totally play that shit. The trick is open environments with good fighting mechanics. Get that down and create a decent webbing ability. Triple A game right there.

I think they're just trying their best to copy Akham Asylum's fighting style, and failing.

They tried replicating the open-world gameplay with Web of Shadows, and even with its late-game symbiote zombie horde it was still incredibly fun just swinging around the city, urgent story mission awaiting my attention or not. Much more than Spider-Man 3 The Movie The Game, anyway.

jawakiller has an interesting idea, mixing Assassins Creed into the formula. Imagine a game where Spidey is Public Enemy Number One and you get the option to change clothes into Peter Parker and wander around on foot - powers intact, but actively trying to keep it on the down-low? Walking slowly, blending into crowds, using your Spider Sense to be aware of how suspicious you're making the authorities?

Because no matter how good the game is, eventually people get bored of swinging on webs. They might suck, but they're trying something different. They just fail. Spectacularly. Over and over again. And their "innovations" are making Spiderman like every other game franchise. And they're really stupid changes to begin with. And swinging on webs is cool. BUT DAMMIT THEY'RE TRYING!

The reason is simple: Activision Blizzard.

You get 2 years and a modest budget. For all R&D and development. If it's not working, ship it anyway. If you don't produce profits comparable with 'Call of Duty' with the end result, you get fired and they keep the royalties.

At this point, they're biding their time until the Reboot hits cinemas. Then they'll have a whole new set of craptacular ideas to grind into the group.

Um Spider-Man 1 didn't have real webswinging--you swung from webs magically suspended in space. Also it wasn't open world.

Spider-Man 2 though...yeah I know what you're saying. That game was amazing. So so good.

The (somewhat) good news is that a new open world Spider-Man game has been announced. Worrisome is that its a movie-tie in (which Spider-Man 2 was, so could be okay) and its still being developed by Beenox (not sure I trust them).
