I play games to be entertained, and often to enjoy a good story in the case of RPGs, the games rating is irrelevant. In fact some of the games I've enjoyed the most are defiantly not among the "Mature" category.
If I were to hazard a guess as to why certain people only enjoy the so-called "Mature" games, I would say it's because either they're lacking in intellect or they're closet psychopaths. ...or both.
I'm assuming that first part is a joke. But I will explain further. It's simply because the game treats us as being mature. OF course a lot of other games do this, but I'm making the case for mature games. They simply offer something we desire that we can't get anywhere else. Sometimes a story can be better by treating your audience as an adult.

It's the same reason why the escapist doesn't have any restrictions on swearing, and has a more intelligent and adult atmosphere.

At least that's my opinion.

I've oftentimes felt that the "Mature" rating is misinterpeted. It's meant to imply a mature player as opposed to mature subject matter in an abolute sense, since honestly it can be argued that extreme violence and graphic sex are not all that "mature" even if entertaining.

That said, people can go on and on about why people like some of the things we do. Sex, Violence, and being scared, sometimes all of them combined. Ask ten differant people and you'll probably get fifteen differant answers.

The bottom line is that there is a demand for such entertainment, however in viewing it you need an audience that can seperate fantasy from reality, and is unlikely to act impulsively on what they see. Teens have their own rating for content between kiddy fare and "mature" fare because they are able to seperate reality better than kids, but not as well as adults. They can for example tell when something is make believe, but they have a somewhat differant view on reality and understanding of how things work than adults which can cloud their judgement. For example I honestly do not think a teenager is capable of dealing with sex in an ADULT manner (and please note, when I say Adult, since even adults are arguably immature when it comes to sex, especially recreationally).

I believe it also takes someone who is relatively mature to be able to not only suspend their disbelief, but also suspend their personal beliefs for the purposes of entertainment.

To put things into perspective being scared, shocked or given the creeps is a negative experience. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to appreciate that (usually retroactively to an extent), this is why not everyone is a horror fan. You set out to experience horror, and the whole point is to offend you. One of the reasons why I am so open minded when it comes to content in general, especially in that genere. I feel the horror genere suffers because people frequently claim they want to see horror, but only want to see it on their terms which defeats the purpose. If you for example don't like satanism, rape, torture, mutilation, and gore, those are specifically the kinds of things it's going to take in order to shock you. Anything you find "acceptible" but it's nature is just going to be a cheezy laugh-fest funhouse experience in comparison.

At any rate, the bottom line is that "Mature" entertainment is not for everyone. Plenty of adults would be perfectly content with nothing other than "T" or "PG" type fare. That's fine for them, but there is a tendency for them to want to attack things they don't like because they simply do not get it.

Not a great answer, but those are my thoughts on the subject.

Same reason we enjoy any game, because they're fun. But so are thousands of non-M rated games too.

My name starts with 'M', so it makes me happy that game developers are addressing me when they put an 'M' on the box.

On the other hand though, a so-called "Mature" game can also fail by try to appeal too much to a so called "adult" *sarcastic air quotes* audience.

Well I never said it was a constant. I've seen what you're talking about in games myself. The word "Mature" can also be used to denote intelligence and experience. Games that have an adult setting, and are mature in the aformentioned meaning, are why I enjoy them so much.

I think with the rating of mature anything goes so the developer is not as limited in their creative ability.

I would say that it's because the ratings are unfair.

I mean, Super Smash Bros. Brawl got a teen rating. You can't tell me with a straight face that that was deserved.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that TF2 got an M rating, even though most of the violence seemed, well, cartoony. I think that it deserved a T rating.

As is said in this video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw_upFVDIkQ], gaming hasn't reached a very high percentage of people playing, so it's natural that people that know nothing beyond the fact it has the word game in the title might try to rate it higher to "protect the children".

Well, I enjoy mature games, because, they let us escape the hard life, and let us do what we are not supposed to do in real life, for example, Fallout 3, watching people vaporise, or limbs fly off has never been more satisfying.

Overall, human nature, and boring jobs.

Because many popular games involve violence. To make an E- or T-rated game with entertaining violence, you need to be a really good developer. It's easier to simply add liberal amounts of blood, swearing, and tits and call it a day.

Well busting someone in the face with a shotgun, splashing the whole room with blood is far more satisfying than PEW PEW I TAGGED U DEAD NAOOOO!

I would play E games if they were good, but the fact is they aren't. M games just happen to be better. I believe GI did an article about the lower standards for E-T games and how they tend to be dumbed down or made really lazily.

Because it's no fun when you blow a dude's head off with a sniper rifle and you can't see every bit of brain matter, bone and blood flying out. It's no fun either when you can't sneak up behind someone in a game with a thin yet sharp wire in hand, swiftly wrap around their throats and yank, hard. As they futilely gasp for air, your pulse races. You can hear their heart beat violently. The marks begin to show. Just before their eyes pop right out of their skull, you slice the jugular and savor of drop of sanguine liquid coming from that geyser of death you created.

That, my friends, is why we enjoy Mature games.

I like Mature games because I'm not a child. I'm not a violent person, but I like violent games. Nudity doesn't bother me in real life, so why would pixel boobies? I say the more the merrier on both counts, as long as it makes for a good game.

I found super monkey ball to be an exquisitely crafted game. I agree that the VAST majority of E rated games are just not too good, but there are some gems out there. Mario games as well, those are always E rated.

I can't recall any E games that I actually enjoy. Monkey ball was ok, but I can't see myself playing that now. Also, Mario just doesn't interest me. Never has, never will IMO.
