I started writing why... But it ended up being a few pages long.

So I'll make it short, a TL;DR version of my original post if you will.

Gaming is my gateway to my childhood, it is what I've always held dear, what has helped me through the rough time, what has made my good times even more magical. It is something that I share with friends, that I experience with those closest (and incidentally youngest) among my family, it is a road full of innovation, full of marvel, of splendor, of that sensation of wonder, of wild mindless fun, of introspection, of thought and imagination.

It is unlike any art, where a child can be brimming full of imagination, he can present it with a drawing or a portrait, he can express it's sensation and emotion with music, he can create the representation of a world's story through cinema. But with games, he can find that world created in full, an experience one can fully explore, like a gateway to a new world.

Nothing like the holodecks of the Star Trek series, but nevertheless, as close as we can get to creating a fully immersive world.

It's the pass time that's taken hours of my life and given me in return much joy, memories and pleasant times with friends. It's the adventures that has caused me to look deep into myself, to ponder the world, to think of what is right and wrong, to romanticize at times and at others to look at theoretical situation with grave realism. It provided me with my sense of right and wrong, enabled me to display more of my self and discard any mask or masquerade that I've held, as many did, during their childhood or their teenage years. It enabled me to find greater courage through knowing myself and the world better.

It provided me with positive growth, and to this day, still continues to marvel me in new and exciting ways.

It is imagination rendered real and palatable, it is childhood incarnate and reasonable maturity whenever it wishes. it's zany, it's freaky, it's looney, it's special, it's wonderful, it's beautiful, it's touching, it's a friend when you're in need, it's a mentor if you so will it, it's a light that helps you find your path if you are wise enough to find it, it is an escape, sweet as it is, though one that none should find themselves trapped in, like with any other form of escapism, such as writing, reading, sports and whatnot.

It is something to balance in our daily lives, and it is worth defending for all the rights it has done in my life, and the very, very few wrongs it has done to me. It is a new marvel which the minds and hearts of mankind have created, it is at times tainted, at times pure.

And that to me, is gaming. And why I loved it, love it, and will probably forever love it through my many years to come, as well as why I will defend it, rationally, calmly, without wanting to taint it's meaning to me, or to drive away others from experiencing it's wonders.

Because I don't want some dickheads like the folks over at California trying to fuck it all up.

And anyways, if they want to start banning violent games (or rather, their sales towards pre-18 years old) that can traumatize kids, whom I will say are typically quite aware of the distance between reality and fantasy if they are raised up right. They should first start with the bible and just about all of the Disney movies from the 80's and 90's. Or be proper their self-righteous ideals and bill the stupid parents who give less then half a fuck about what their kids are doing, then see if the public will give them support for that idea as opposed to one that relies heavily upon the ignorant stereotypical view of gaming borne of boomers over the age of 50 who're far too paranoid of the new, prosecuting it in the same manner as the art of their forefathers were.

..Yes, this IS the TL;DR version. Surprising how freakishly huge it is nevertheless huh?

They can tell a story and convey a message in more ways than any other type of medium. Many people are ignorant and dismiss them as nothing more than childish escapism, I would like to educate said people because they are usually people who have never played a vidoe game or have seen one bad game and were content to brand all other game accordingly.

I LOVE stories. Stories and storytelling are my passion in life. I think videogames are a fascinating new medium of storytelling--and I love that it's interactive. You take part in the story, rather than just being a passive reader. Even a game as simple as Pokemon offers interesting new possibilities and stories just because of how you, the player, play it.

Because I love gaming.
I love it so much, if it were a person I would take it into my arms and impregnate it with many beautiful children...
I love it so much that If It were a person I would get down on one knee and marry it.
I love it so much that I would kiss its forehead as it hold our first born child and smiles...

I Love it so much... I'D STILL DO ALL OF THIS IF IT WERE A GUY!!!

Because it is a valid form of entertainment and storytelling in a relatively new and unexplored medium.

Mainly because more then 85% of people i meet are morbid depressing people. 2012 this, Sunflare in a few months that the enviorments going to hell we dont have much time left, world war 3 is coming. Like shut up honestly. Stop conspiring and discussing the many ways the world can go to hell. Sure things are bad but my grandpa who was born in 1936 would always tell me that things were WAYYY worse back then and the generation now has nothing better to do then conspire. Sorry end rant. So i escape to video games full of intresting personalitys and characters competive fighting game tournaments and intence RTS tournaments and games. Its a wondeful world! i just wish 85% of the population would see that.

I am extremely glad to see all your responses and it kinda reaffirms my faith in the gaming community that there are people out there that can back up why they love games and continue to play and protect them.

It's the gestalt of all prior, respective, artistic and technical disciplines. It's relaxing entertainment that requires and rewards participation.

It's good stuff.

Love: because I enjoy them for challenge/escapism/narrative. To a certain point, I feel like games are a part of who I am.
Defend: Because everything deserves a defense. If no one defends games, then the only thing that legislators will hear is the cry of the noisy majority/minority. I'm not prepared to let bigots and puritans censor my life.

I defend gaming because I love them. I love them because they entertain me on a whole other level compared to other media. Also, I love how it invites to a myriad of amusing thoughts and jokes to share with other who's shared the gaming experience and thus opens for a connection through a shared interest.

I get to kill things without being charged for murder.
I get to explore new places, real and imaginary.
I can connect with people who like the same games and actually play with them.
I get to have super powers, or be super awesome.
I can take my frustrations out on the pcs.
Most story lines are awesome, puzzle games make me think without it being boring.
I get to kick chickens without it actually being animal abuse.
I love the scenery and admire the people who make the games.

Overall its fun, it makes you think, its a form of art, its a stress reliever, I can make friends, gaming is just over all awesome. That's why I love/defend gaming.

I love gaming because it shows how imagination can become reality.. How you can form emotional bonds with fictional characters without looking like a Twilight fangirl. How you can control the enviroment, how you can watch the story unfold, how you can get emmersed in the scenery and how you can feel the satisfaction that you finished it.

Then there are serious assholes who think all gaming is your Modern Warfare 2 where everyone just screams "BOOM HEADSHOT" 24/7 and forgets that not all games are senseless bloodfests and that some games are an art in their own right. I love gaming for the RPGs (Yeah, I said it) and defend games from the w**kers (American politicians).
