I ask myself that sometimes but the fact is that once or twice (if we're lucky) a year a game is released that is really engrossing, fun, and actually worth $60.

To escape from real life for me. My life sucks and honestly i prefer to play video games than go out in the real world and do stuff. This might make me sound like a loser but , i like being the hero in a fictional story , where there are no real life consequences . Because of this the games i love the most are RPGs.

To quote my favorite music artist eminem
"i bury my face in comic books , cuz i don't want to look ,at nothing this worlds too much , i've swallowed all i could, if i could swallow a bottle of tylenole i would, and end it for good ,just say goodbye hollywood, i prolly should, these problems are pilling all at once, cause everythig that bothers me i got it bottle up, i thinking i'm bottoming out , but i'm not about to give up ,i gotta get up ... Etc .. Etc "

The song is say goodbye hollywood if anyone is curious, thought i doubt it since the escapists hate rap music.

Lots of reasons really.

It's nice to be in a world completely unlike my own for a change, to live a life I could never possibly live in the real world. I like the way games tell story, though player action, I contribute to the narrative in an active rather than passive fashion. I've been playing since I was a baby (literally) so it's a big part of who I am. It's a good way of connecting with people. Most of my friends play games. It's a good form of release and escape sometimes. I think games can present unique concepts and ideas and certain ideas in unique ways. They sometimes make me think about things in a way I hadn't before, and it's nice to expand my horizons. I enjoy the gameplay itself, it's fun for me.

That's not to say I don't enjoy reading, or being outside, or living in the real world, and there are other facets of my being besides video games, but they are a part of my life and I enjoy them.

It's fun. Pure and simple. Also because I live in the ass end of the world in the ass end of Ireland. So to do anything that doesn't involve going outside into the country side I play games.

I do it because its fun and relaxing! Eventhough that world is virtual its still real when your in it and in that world things can happen that could never happen in real life and you can be who ever you want.
I mean how many times havent you played a game and then notice that you thought that you were in that world and not reality?! I will say that that is easy when you sit in a pitch black room with only the screen giving light and you cant hear anything except the game... that i call awesome gaming:D

This world sucks, the worlds in my games don't, I think that's why I started and why I keep going to this day...

Entertainment, videogames are a fun retreat much like listening to music or watching TV, there's not much difference at all in their goals.

I think it's fun and relieves stress(When I'm not thinking about the game industries current state that is) and I like getting involved in deep story lines that make you want more. It also helps pass time if I have nothing else to do, which is almost always.

These days, all that shit out the front door you seem to hold in such high regard is one of the major reasons why I play games. I'll never lose touch with the real world, but it's nice to take a break from it when I get the opportunity.
Guess I really am an escapist.

I play games because there is never anything worth watching on TV, when there is I have Freeview+ and the internet, so I can watch it whenever. Films don't hold my attention, as I get pissed off when people do stupid things and make bad decisions, but in a game I can do what I want. Gaming is as much of a waste of time, as watching a film or watching TV programmes, so basically, I play games instead of watching TV or films.

Multiple reasons.
Stress relief
Anger Management
To forget about the real world for a few hours and forget about all my problems and lose myself in a game when I don't feel like reading.

Take your pick. All are applicable.

The same reason I read books and watch shows. It's fun. I like getting away from everything every now and then. Just beat Assassin's Creed 2 and holy crap.

In the case of fighting games, I'm a moderately competitive player. I'm not the "curse out the other guy when I lose" guy, but I like to improve myself and enjoy the challenge of fighting someone better than myself.
