To me this is the bane of the Escapist. I haven't seen anything like it on any other website with a forum.CleverNickname said:re: ignoring, it's not so much real ignoring, i.e. them reading stuff and not replying to anything; no, people just skim the OP and reply with their opinion as if it was the most interesting thing to be put in the internet
the few times there is a "discussion", it's no more than 3 or 4 people going back and forth about how wrong one of them is about a minor point that is hardly on-topic after the third post
so yeah, I don't really like forums much anymore, but I still visit 3 of them simply to pass the time between breakfast and starting up my first game of the day...
Because it is a big site, you don't know many people personally and don't want to speak to them for the sake of speaking to them. I found finding an active niche forum group solves that, you start to know several people better and you want to talk to them a lot in the forum group or PMs.Lexxi64 said:Another thing; I seem to be the kind of forum member that is ignored even though I stay within posting rules; hardly anyone replies to me, nobody listens that much, wondering why--with alot of members on the site, why are some people completely ignored? On sites where talking is the main focus, it's quite difficult to be immersed in any discussion when nobody replies.
Not trying to rant, just want to hear your thoughts.![]()
Quite frankly, I'm bored often, and the escapist is great for whiling away time reading and replying to interesting topics.Lexxi64 said:The main reason I go on forums is because I like to see all the various interesting replies, even though I don't really get anything from forums (and tend to give up on them after a while, aswell). Do you stay for the post count, or like to just have something to do?

Big reason why I rarely even open, let alone reply to, threads that have gone on to a second page. All the good answers are probably taken, and if I'm not one of the first few generic direct answers to the OP, nobody is gonna read it anyway. I know I don't.achilleas.k said:Here, you can read page 15 and all the posts are direct replies to the first one.
Heh, I guess this theory seems to prove itselfCleverNickname said:re: ignoring, it's not so much real ignoring, i.e. them reading stuff and not replying to anything; no, people just skim the OP and reply with their opinion as if it was the most interesting thing to be put in the internet

This is the other reason, definitely to pass the time if I'm at work and there's nothing going on, I wouldn't say so much to get to know people though, I get to meet a lot of people around where I live and have trouble getting to know them let alone some people on the internet.Hipsy_Gypsy said:Heh, I'm really starting to like these forumes because the people on them don't seem at all too shabby. I feel like that as well sometimes but I think it's just all in our heads
It's really interesting, I'm potentially getting to know people I guess plus it gives me something to help pass the time.

Fuck missed this bad boy, I think you're pretty much hitting the nail on the head here. It's weird as anything that there can be 15 pages of people saying the same thing over and over, replying to the same question huh? It differently left me wondering for a while, had no idea what was going on.achilleas.k said:To me this is the bane of the Escapist. I haven't seen anything like it on any other website with a forum.
I slightly disagree with the second point: On other forums, when there is a discussion, it usually is a proper discussion and people keep it going for pages. You can read page 10 of the thread and realise that the people posting have read and were involved in all the posts up to that point. However, I have NEVER seen this happen on this site.
I found it very strange when I first came here; I even made a thread about it (I think it was called "Discussions on the Escapist" though I can't be bothered to look for the link). Here, you can read page 15 and all the posts are direct replies to the first one. If that happened anywhere else, you'd get people telling the poster to go read the first 14 pages before joining the discussion.
To answer the OP, I go to forums on sites with specific content to discuss said content. My forum activity in general has been very low the past few years though, because I don't have enough time to keep up with everything.
The weird thing is that the only reason I post on the Escapist is because of the sidebar with the "Latest Posts" and "Hot Threads". Sometimes, there's just a topic that catches my eye and makes me curious. If they didn't have that I would probably not even know there was a forum on this site and most importantly, I wouldn't care.
