I still have my original VHS tapes for the series that I got when I was like 6 and I guess I'm not enough of a fanboy to really care about the Special editions edits

Star Wars fanboi's are crazy enough to give a big fit about things that aren't a big deal at all.

I don't mind them, some of the effects are a bit jarring but other than that, it's all good. However I have a huge problem with the Hayden Christianson (hope I spelled that right) replacement. First off, the prequels were not good, they had some cool ideas and characters and concepts, but they weren't really good. And secondly, maybe I'm over thinking this, but I don't like the implications that Hayden-Anakin at the end brings, it seems to me to say that Vader sort of.... reverted, to being Anakin, and I for one object to that. I prefer the original, Vader becomes Anakin yes, but it's not him reverting, it's him.... growing, becoming good again, not reverting. It's kind of hard to express, but you might be able to pick up my line of thought.
I always thought of it as him becoming what he should have been.

For the original or remastered? 'Cause that's what I always thought about the original, just express more eloquently.

WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL OF HAN SHOOTING FIRST?

Seriously, when watching the new editions, I slowed the scene down on purpose...Greedo shot first by, like, a millisecond, and Han still comes off as a badass either way.

Star Wars fans are nuttier than Sonic fans, I swear.
Because he didn't just shoot first. Look back to the original film, he was the ONLY one to shoot. It was a scene almost pulled out of an old western like Fistful of Dollars. That really changes the feel of his character, and gives him a lot more of an arc. He starts as a greedy asshole, but ends up helping the good guys save the day. If he already starts off seeming like a reluctant hero, then his arc isn't as important.

I don't really hate the special editions, but it seems like for every cleaned up or remastered frame/effect, they cram new ones in your face that just don't fit. If they had a remastered version that didn't add any of this new crap in and just made the existing effects look better, then the special editions would be quite well loved among the more die hard fans.

It's not as horrible as people say it is, but I just hate them because the added effects to the film add absolutely nothing to it.

It seems completely unnecessary and doesn't add anything to the characters or the atmosphere, in fact it takes away from the atmosphere, because you'll immediately know what effects were added in later, which just bugs the shit out of me when watching them.

What's worse is that they can be unnecessarily distracting in some cases.

Then some of them are just completely phoned in effects, like Han Solo's head movement.

Ugh.

I'm not even mentioning what they changed story-wise, it was just a poor effort overall.

I don't mind the changes, not bothered either way. In fact, in some cases, I prefer it. Example:

Editing in Jabba is a PLUS.

Also, in my opinion having Hayden Christensen appear at the end of RotJ makes more sense than having some random dude appear WHO WE HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.

But my main non-caring-that-much reason is that I respect George's right to update/change/fuckup his baby however he wish. It's his thing, he can do what he wants.

All that means is that he won't get a penny of my money until after he's dead, cos I'm not buying ANY boxsets until I'm damn sure he's finished messing with it.

You wanna hear a secret?

I don't hate the special editions. I don't necessarily prefer them, but I do enjoy them just as much.

Ok simple answer: Would you think if a painter thinks like thirty years after he finished his masterpiece," I think I could improve this", and then starts to put some paintbrushes here, and some there, and then puts it back into the museum. Would you argue that this was dignified and the integrity of that painter is still 100% intact?

I'd like to counter that by saying Leonardo Da Vinci never felt he finished the Mona Lisa and that Paintings and Movies are vastly different mediums.
Most artists (of all varieties) never feel like they're truly finished with any given work; there are always things they wish would have turned out differently. However, most of them know when to leave well enough alone.
