Why do you watch movies?
Why do you read books?
It's a medium like any other, and I don't see why people don't ask the questions above instead.

I have no friends in this country and my reality is depressing. Now stop reminding me.

.....aaaaand that's the only honest answer you'll get OP ^_^
I dunno, I think all the people saying "because they're fun" are right on the money.
Yeah, you're right. I didn't mean "honestly". Came out wrong, that did.

meh too lazy to edit.

Well, I play games for three reasons. One reason I play games is because it is a from of escapism to me. Playing games, for any period of time, whisks me away into a different world so that I may momentarily forget the complications of modern teenage life.

Another reason I game is because gaming engages my mind and helps me learn new things. Believe it or not, I've extrapolated many important lessons from games. I've taught myself the entirety of the Butterfly Effect by playing Fragger at Armorgames, and learned to be a being of necessity by playing numerous RPGs such as Fallout and KotoR. I've figured out, by playing a life sim from '86, that my personal problems are not because I don't try hard enough to be good, but because the paradigm I follow is flawed in the sense that it is too linear.

My final reason is that playing games is fun. Seriously, after a normal day of school, there's nothing more fun than a game of Total War or a few rounds of Team Fortress.

EDIT: Sorry for dragging any unsuspecting forum browsers through that poorly written tripe.

You can't?

OT: Cause I enjoy getting pissed off when someone kills me in a video game, no but seriously, what other reason is there besides fun?

Depends on the game and the mood I'm in at the time. Mostly, I play games as a means of immersing myself in another world and exploring places and ideas that games seem to have a knack for bringing out in a way that no other narrative form can hope to match. Sometimes I just play for fun and time-wasting. Sometimes for both those reasons at the same time. But, whatever the reason is at the moment, it's always going to be because games are, quite simply, the most interesting form of entertainment out there and nothing can beat the experience of playing a good game.

I play games for entertainment. It started when I was about 3 and my dad brought home a SNES, and I haven't stopped gaming since :)

Because if I didn't have video games as a hobby/lifestyle/obsession, I'd probably be in a bar getting drunk, in jail, dead or worse (worse meaning a social life). I'm pretty sure I don't want any of those alternatives.
