Why do you play online games?

So recently I started playing the Assassin's Creed Revelations multiplayer, and I started wondering why people play online games. This is the first time I've played online multiplayer on any game in a long time since I generally don't like it. I only played it in this case because it offered unique gameplay that I could not experience on my own. I rarely play online because it gets repetitive quickly and is pretty similar to the single player. I also hate the people who play it, as most mic users tend to be annoying assholes (though for some reason I've only seen one on AC, and yes he was annoying). That, and I hate starting with no experience and very little tools compared to other players who have the best tools the game can offer, as well as knowing every map and every mode inside out, which means I get beaten easily (again, I managed to avoid this on AC as I find you can still win without additional tools or experience, as most players only use the starting tools anyway). Then there's the whole hassle of finding people, and I generally prefer to just play games at my own leisure.
Anyway, enough about me, I'd just like to know why you play (or don't play) online games and what is your opinion on them.

Some people like to be challenged, have fun with friends, play competitively, socialize etc.

I play for all the above reasons depending on the game.

I usually stick to single-player games, but I do love me a bit of Red Orchestra 2.

Sure there's problems with it, some of the most fun I ever had in video games was online, espescially with friends.

The only reason that I will play a game online is if the AI isn't good enough to give me a challenge or is to limited for me to keep enjoying.

It really depends on the game for me. For Battlefield 3 it is because I like shooters that require teamwork, and the multiplayer delivers that. In Endwar's case it is because of the game mode, "Theater of War", that turns every battle you win or lose into a win or loss for the faction you play as, on a world scale. And games like Halo I play because I can just jump in and have a good time.

Well, I don't...

Still, not to appear such a jerk, I play LAN a lot, either shooters or TW. LAN FPSing is done almost purely for the camaraderie with my old uni mates and it's never taken seriously (well, not a first, at least). TW battles, I play against human enemies because it's a hell of a better challenge than the AI, which generally sucks balls... and hard...

I usually avoid multiplayer but if it's a game I really enjoy I may try it out. I still play Gears of War 3 online occasionally. If you play without a mic it really isn't all that bad. It still makes me a little mad that so many games put all the emphasis on the online component of their games but every now and then I can enjoy it.

when I play Multiplayer Myth 2 with my teamates talk on ventrillo while playing myth with stupid jokes, do funny things like play a free for all and then gang up on someone who is really rude and annoying. since we are all using vent we send everything at them and they are like WTF.

Oh and probably for the competition aspect and sheer randomness of the game that makes u laugh

Basically, the competition. I have a (possibly a very unhealthy) drive to compete against others and to emerge as the best.

It's fun to beat the computer but no AI is going to beat even the dumbest of people.

When I was a wee little lad I had this problem, and it was simple I wanted to win.. At everything. So when the days of gaming came along I'd say when I picked up Counter Strike I wanted to be amazing at that game so I practised hard so I could get really good, and from there on I started playing in leagues and tournaments. I get such a thrill from how intense it is when everyone is in the game playing as a team.

Because it's fun. I'm not really sure what else I can add to this.

I mean, playing Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 2 4 player co-op is some of the most fun experiences I've ever had in gaming in my 21 years on this planet.

I like the challenge, I certainly don't use it as a murder simulation or as an anger management tool. Also, it's fun to game with friends Borderlands is amazing co-op but I found the single player a little boring.

Shooters I get really bored of if my friends aren't playing with me. Dunno why. Fighters I can play on my own for ages. Same with League of Legends type games.

Well I play League of Legends partly because it's a fun game and partly because the community is so hilariously bad it's funny.

Also I could listen to Lulu's lines for an entire day and not get bored of them.

"Transmogulate!"

Though if you're super "RARGH MUST WIN!" competitive don't play fighters, because people will be far far better than you and you will get destroyed by stupid shit you should be able to beat just becasue you're having an off day. Also don't play LoL if you're super competitive because you'll be That Guy who rages about having no backup when he runs into the enemy base alone liek a baws. The point being that having someone on your team who bitches about how it was his team's fault is as inevitable as The Sun rising everyday.

Yeah sorry I couldn't save you dude. But uh, i'm too busy living to fail at buffing you. No health buffs are gonna save you from a 5v1... Unless you're playing Master Yi. Then lolololololololol.

I swear Master Yi's are always gonna kill groups of enemy champions solo in every game they're in. Probably should check his abilities to see what gives him the magic multikilling touch...

Is it the double Phantom Dancers? It is isn't it?

Oh, your one of THOSE players are you? A walking junkyard :p

OT: It can be some of the best and worst experiences in gaming for me. All caused by other players. Not so much competition (mr average) so i usually play games that promote teamwork. Becuase then i can support the better players ^_^

Theres, just something satisfying about knowing that the character you just gibbed had another playing controlling them. What i lack in reflexes i make up for by keeping an eye on the team and being devious ^_^

The only game I play online with any regularity is LitteBigPlanet, and then only to access the user-created levels. I'll very occasionally play something like Mario Kart online, but people visit the moon more often than that. I've always had my brothers around to satisfy my multiplayer needs. Plus, I find playing online lacks that joy that playing with someone in the same room has.

I suppose because I'm playing like minded individuals with similar interests who are very very competitive and successful in life (heh, unlike myself). Plus the game we play is very hard to master but a labour of undying love <3.
