I play video games because while I was growing up with Autism, kids made fun of me. I felt worthless knowing that I could never be normal, but when I was playing video games I was the hero, the people in the game looked up to me, or I was the one who decided the fate the world and so on. It made me feel good, ever since then I've been a devoted gamer.

When im bored of life, i can devote my time to learning the lives of "others". or learning how to overcome an obstacle, whether that be a final boss, someone online, or just my own personal goals within a video game.

plus they are fun. ;)

I'm an addict and I love violence. I also have no friends so i create deep interpersonal relationships with NPCs and I have a body pillow in the shape of zero suit samus.

...Well, I'm sure someone thinks so anyway. I play them because they're fun, and interesting challenges. Kinda like why I'd do anything else.

I thought Pac-man looked fun when I saw my grandpa playing it when he bought his Atari 2600. So I joined him. Then came NES, Snes, Playstation, etc. I've always been fascinated by the medium's potential.

Kids really made fun of you because you had Autism? those jerks, from what you typed, you seem normal to me..

OT: I think I play because I get bored easily, and they kind of fill in the time between something. Also I like xbox live, its an easy way to keep in touch with friends that have moved away to college or live on the other side of the country now.

Cos they're fun. Durrrr

EDIT: Oh wait were you hoping for something meaningfull? Cmon people be realistic. You can pull any philosophical reason out of your arse about why you play games but when it really comes down to it you just play games because theyre fun.

Because I am a sad shut in living in my parents back room and I never go outside after my DnD group kicked me out because I totally proved them wrong using the 2nd edition ruleset that I bought from the local comicbook store which the owner made a joke and made me realize another woman will never want to see me naked again because I am covered in body hair that retains too much heat and causes me to sweat profusely which my doctor said thats normal under the circumstances but that doesnt comfort me because I know he got his medical license as a vet in guatamala and is only in this country because he cant go back now due to outstanding warrants for his arrest due to trafficing narcotics in and out of the country which he couldnt help himself because he was brought up by a poor adopted family with nothing and that reminds me of my own upbringing because as a child my console generation was Atari when my friends were just getting their Super nintendos which I guess it was ok because while they only had one or two games to play I had like 700 which we got from garage sales and flea markets because you know quantity is better than quality right?

/shrug.. i dunno. Nothing else better to do?

I wouldn't mind finding a body pillow of Peach or Zelda (Adult Version to those who think otherwise)

I have high functioning Autism, and to be honest in Elementary school no one cared, we were kids, it was when I hit Middle School and they saw me step into the Special Ed Rooms when they made fun of me.

Two reasons:

1) I play games because they're my favorite way to kill my free time. I have other hobbies (creative writing and such), but gaming is my favorite way to pass the day.

2) The social aspect. I'm currently 22 and living in my 10th home. That's a new house around every two years. As it turns out, it gets REALLY old making new IRL friends just to say, "Goodbye, nice knowing you, never gonna see you again," every couple of years. With games, I can make friends not just in my neighborhood, but all over the state, the country, and the world. The best part is that I can keep them as friends on the exact same terms no matter when and how often I move.

I play games because I derive entertainment from it.

Also because as a child I was beaten to death every day by those jerks at school. No, I mean I actually died every day. Yeah, try to one up MY bully story!

They're fun.

And really, if you play your cards right, it can be one of the cheaper hobbies to take up.
