QFT. Ya seriously...OP must have dark sunglasses and earplugs in not to notice the amount of sheer hate being directed at EA right now. A lot of it coming from me in fact.

Let's face it: by the time any corporation with reasonable direct interaction with consumers reaches EA/Activision size they'll need a shovel for the hate.

I remember a time where Activision and EA were respectable game companies who developed and released respectable games (THPS and Aggressive Inline for the former, and SSX and Burnout for the latter).

Now everything sucks and, well... surely there's someone to blame right?

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I still wounder why. EA hires people to act like Religious extremist to boycott Dante's Inferno, Medal of Honor's censorship, Dead Space 2 commercial(we should be luck that Fox New is stupid and attacked Bulletstorm instead, or we would fucked), the whole "Battlefield 3's gonna take down Modern Warfare 3" statement they made at E3 after Activison said they wanted to have, and don't get me started on that Battlefield commercial slogan. Why does EA keep doing this and get away with this? But does activision get hate? Yes, there was the whole "2010 employee firings and departures", but that's just one thing they've done wrong, and yet EA has so much more. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a lot of the games they publish, like Mass Effect and Bulletstorm, Those little "Marketing acts" and the statements just prove that they're acting like a bunch of 13 year old boys with the mindset of a 7 year old. What do you guys think.
Your fucking kidding right, EA gets so much undeserved shit on this site its unbelievable. I work for EA and just mentioning that to a hardcore game nerd gets them chucking theoretical shit in my eyes.
wow, that must be pretty cool working there, You're probably sick of games by now though, (I mean as an example, lets say my favourite food is, say, pizza, but eventually I'd get sick of it if I started working in that Pizzaria across the road full time)

I would say they both get a lot of hate. However, EA's CEO is John Riccitiello, who has the common decency of sounding like someone that, far from being a philanthropy, actually cares about the quality of the product and has made an effort to create new IPs this generation (like Mass Effect, Dead Space, Mirrors Edge, Brutal Legend, Rock Band, etc). On the other hand, the voice of Activision is Bobby Kotick, who sounds like a business guy, more interested in milking their franchises for every little bit of juice until they are an empty carcass, like what happened to Guitar Hero and Tony Hawks.

Yeah... I think this says it all [http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/an-open-letter-to-ea-marketing]. EA gets its own share of crap thrown at it.

Activision gets hate due to milking franchises dry constantly.
To be fair this is a criticism of EA and their sports games too. Except possibly FIFA, because the competition from Pro-Evo keeps them evolving the game.

Yeah, but really that's more the fault of the millions of people who buy EA's sports game every single year. As a business, catering to the sure fire purchases of a few million people who don't complain about lack of change is basically a free meal ticket.

Only works with certain sports game though, as we saw with THQ's UFC franchise.

I'm talking more about people hating on EA for "being evil", of course referring to the practice of EA buying up smaller companies and closing them when they underperform. As a massive business you can't expect to keep feeding money into your failing subsidiaries.

People can be as mad as they want about companies like Pandemic getting closed, but look at it this way.

If a company like Pandemic was failing and EA had to choose between funding them to keep them afloat or fund a competent like BioWare in a project, picking to close Pandemic and support BioWare just makes sense.

It sucks that people lost their jobs but at least EA keeps the good employees of the failing company. It`s not an arguable point that Pandemic had its fair share of mediocre games.

I just think its silly for people to get mad when they get closed after these same people got sick of seeing them make crappy games.

I was actually told to go and work for EA. I kind of humoured the person about it, as EA isn't a company I want to get involved with... even if that wasn't a fanciful goal. EA gets just as much hate as Activision if not more. After things like Origin, I was very put off. They make good games an all but.. Ehh. Not my go-to developer.

Also... hatin' on Call of Duty? I don't hate the game, I hate the fanboys. 'nuff said. The game is mediocre and pretty same-old itself. No reason to hate an average, well-selling game.

EA Games churns out fairly weak games, with the occasional good one, while finding new and interesting ways to fuck people over.
Draconian DRM exists in the industry today thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.
The annualised franchise exists thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.
Closing down old games to force migration to your new games exists thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.
Non-existent post-Sale support for customers is the standard in the industry today thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.
Release Day DLC exists in the industry thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.
One sided EULA are the standard, and ever more punishing versions constant released after Sale for games you already own, thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.'
The war on the Used Games Industry exists in the industry thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.
Buying studios only to close them down after they release a game to prevent bonuses and royalties exists as a large scale publisher practice thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.
Consolisation of every franchise, from shooters to RPGs to RTSs, exists in the industry thanks in large to continuing efforts by EA Games.
The 'Base Game' release structure - whereby the 'Base Game' contains the barest of features required to obtain a Sale to that Expansion Packs can be released at lower costs - is used today thanks to the efforts of EA Games.
Remaking older PC titles as brain dead console-centric affairs exists in the industry today thanks in large to efforts by EA Games.

These are just the few I can recite off the top of my head. With a little time and effort, I could write you a novel. Seriously.

You know, if there is one thing I think people can at least agree on is at least for CoD (this statement isn't a matter of quality) is that they have No Online-passes and no DRM (unless you consider Steam, which technically is one but not a bad one.)

EA has Online-Passes and some DRM (Crysis for example I had to get help from support due to DRM) and has multiple franchises on yearly release. That makes them slightly worse.

Imo its fine to release a game yearly, but don't have things like Online passes and such.

I don't quite understand where you're coming from. EA does get a lot of hate, but the examples you brought don't at all sound like something to be hated on. It sounds like standard marketing to me (Why wouldn't EA say that Battlefield is going to take down Modern Warfare? The two are in direct competition).

Activision firing their employees over some really shady business practices (withholding royalties? WTF?) is in a whole other ballpark from EA's marketing being cocky little bastards.

There are things about EA to hate, but aim higher, bro.

People do hate EA. But I do agree that an inordinate amount of hate is given to Activision rather than EA, especially after their recent marketing crap. The "Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2" campaign was one of the most insulting, juvenile, awful things game advertising has ever done.
