Why does Call of Duth have to keep reminding us it's the best series of all time?

I reckoned it was some super-old NES/Atari hardcore RPG with Duth being the evil wizard at the bottom of the dungeon. Imagine my surprise when all I saw was Dog AI.

Duth is the lesser known and dorkier cousin of Cthulhu who is now attempting to gain some recognition by replicate Cthulhu's famous moment.
Remarks like these are why I write smart-ass comments in the first place. It's not just because I'm a dick.

Good job guyz.

Hasn't it gone over the hill by now and well haven't people complaining about how stale it gotten. Of course we now get lasers..

Yeah lasers but the basic gameplay doesn't changes much. A few things will be added, a few old maps will be gone. "new" maps will be made to replace them and yeah it will in core be the same game.

But it is the same darn game people keep buying. So why should they change it. If a formula works of course they will keep using it. Think of CoD as a sports franchise. Everybody needs Fifa 2015 right!

Picking a game I only got from Amazon this morning:

"Cut at will! METAL GEAR RISING is a stunning epic action game set in the METAL GEAR SOLID universe. You take control of Raiden, a cyborg ninja armed with a High-Frequency Blade which can cut through virtually anything. Feel the full 360-degree blade control and experience a new kind of METAL GEAR game!
It's not exactly doing the medium's claims to maturity any favours...
Hey, at least it gives you the jist of the gameplay, I don't think Rising was trying to be anything other than over the top fun, which is succeeds at perfectly. In the very first level you suplex a METAL GEAR?! Then run along a stream of rockets, down a collapsing clock tower and stab its face in with a samurai sword to the tune of some kick ass metal.

DUTH!!!!! Someone hit the nail on the head, he sounds like a very 'special' Lovecraftian monster.

Anyway, seriously OP, you do know how advertising works, right? If the developers think telling people that it's the best selling series of all time (which it is) will help it sell more copies, why wouldn't they do that? As for them posting good reviews on the box, again, why wouldn't they? The fact that you happen to disagree with those reviews is irrelevant.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as what they are posting on the box is content that is actually in the game or real reviews, they can put whatever they want there.

Because that kind of advertising works? If a family member or a friend doesnt know much about videogames and theyre looking for a present for someone who does, they'll probably be attracted to the ones plastered with awards and stuff like that.
Hell I've been playing games for a good portion of my life and that kind of advertising still works on me. Well not to the point of buying normally, but I'm way more inclined to look at it and look up information about it

If they didn't keep telling you how good it is, you'd probably forget. Probably while playing.

No its not. COD1 and UO were only good one. then series going downhill but become more mainstream.
its a mainstream franchise praise by corrupt mainstream media because its popular.
They're advertising their popularity, not their quality.

Furthermore, quality is a purely subjective thing for basically every aspect of a game barring things like polycount, resolution and framerate.

Not everyone has your elitist PC fanboy taste in videogames.
Some people like JRPGs and linear action games.
I'd be more annoyed but then I realised something. Has anybody tried playing Call of Duty 1 and 2 these days? They've aged so badly.

Call of Duty 3 at least has stayed the same, even if the game itself wasn't anything special.
Every now and then me and several of my friends organize a lan party and we play CoD2 and MoH:AA. While some mechanics didn't age well, the games are a 100 times more interesting to play than any modern shooter in the last generation besides Tribes:Ascend during the beta.
So no, they didn't age badly.

Seriously. All the boxes I've seen since CoD 4 have 'THE BEST SELLING FRANCHISE OF ALL TIME' plastered on it. And every year the box shows less and less, and more dickriding from reviewers about how 'good' the game is.
You sure about this? The image is well over 50% screenshots, the text is the usual copyright drone and there're no press blurbs of any kind. There're only two marketing lines in the image: one talks about its new multiplayer/mod feature, the other states it's the best-selling FPS in history. Which it is. Promotion blurbs are usually lies anyway, why take offense with the ones that are true? Marketing 101.

Gotta have something be the box blurb, may as well be something that's very market-y and matches up with all of Activision's charts and focus groups for what the "perfect game" supposedly is.
