Why? Is it because they think it fell short of Aliens? Did they not like bald Ripley? I must know...

Because there was no cool action sequences, no likeable characters, and no memorable quotes. Alien was an awesome horror film, Aliens was a kickass action/horror film, and Aliens 3 was the shit that comes out of the bowels of a dying franchise.
Agreed...

Alien Resurrection was them just making the point that its the future so we can clone whoever we want even if they did get totally melted at the end of the last movie! Though it did have Ron Pearlman in Res so it wasn't a total blow out.

Because Aliens (Or Alien 2 for you retards) Was the bastard son of Chuck Norris and Jesus and next to THAT the movie was bad, well not nessesarily bad but the weakest link in a chain that could hold up Mars.

Alien 3 does ultimatley fall apart but personally I still found it quite interesting. The creature itself was quite cool and the bald Ripely was also a nice new look for the series. That said it certainly didn't reach the pedistal that Aliens had left it on so that's probably why people didn't like it all that much.

I enjoyed Alien 3. It was an interesting look at the universe and was good in its own way. It was different. Maybe that wasn't all good, but, in my book, it wasn't all bad, either.

I saw Alien3 and it's my favourite from the series, but only because of the suspense thing, I mean, new breed (the Runner) and no weapons. The rest...well, no likeable characters was a downer, but when it's prisoners, are they meant to be likeable? I found Res to be a really dull movie though.

Personally, I believe two things (here be spoilers):
1) It took some of the fundamental themes of the first two films (Ripley as Ishmael, redemption, the motherhood bond, never giving up) and flushed them down the toilet.
In particular, it took the one actual gain from the second (Newt) and killed her off screen.
2) The characters, while interesting, are largely physically indistinguishable from each other. This isn't quite as much a problem nowadays, as a few of them have become fairly well-known character actors. But still, trying to figure out whether it was convict 3 or 7 who just got face munched sort of distracts from the actual tension.

On a related tangent that I'm not gonna build a thread for: people keep saying Fincher's vision for the film went unrealized. Can anyone tell me what his actual planned vision was? Otherwise it seems like sort of a cop-out for a director people (including me) like.

The big draw back to me is that Newt and Hicks die off screen before the movie even starts, and Ripley doesn't even care that much. I honestly would have preferred they use different actors.

But I like the rest of the movie. Maybe it isn't as good as 1 or 2, but I think it represents a good step in Ripley's character arc. She starts off as a regular crew member in Alien who just happens to be the last survivor; it could have been any of them really. In Aliens she's more important, but still subordinate to the military types until the end. In Alien 3, she's become the leader, the one others look to for direction.

I really like who when you don't have guns, even 1 alien is a giant boss fight.

I didn't like the attempted rape scene though. Specifically, I don't think Ripley should have been rescued from it. She should have beat their asses by herself.

The only bad Alien films are the ones that involve Predators, the only bad Predator films are the ones where they have them fighting xenomorphs.

In order of awesome:

Aliens
Alien
Alien 3
Alien Res

but they are all still good.

Alien 3 was a disaster. They had to rewrite the script tons of times. You remember the hero of Aliens? That really cool guy that survived alongside ripley who's name escapes me right now? The studio intentionally killed him (and newt). That entire film, from its production to its plot the whole thing is just a mess.

I found it quite good but it is essentially just the original movie in a different setting, with slightly less appealing characters.

I like Alien 3. I even snuck into the theater when I was a kid. It's the prison movie of the series. Hell, I even like resurrection as long as I don't take it seriously.
