Why does everyone hate IGN?

It's the fact that they're biased and give favorable reviews. Basically the reasons you sited are NOT unreasonable, they're very reasonable to hate a gaming REVIEW site.

What irks me the most though is that they'll often show the "reviewer" playing some of the games and talking about them as though they're quite familiar with the game, although when you see them playing the game it's quite obvious that they don't really understand what they're doing and that the people that they show aren't the people who actually play/review the games.

Quite frankly such fraudulent businesses should be illegal. Also the workers of IGN should be tied down and taken across all the western nations, giving every passer by the chance to beat them across the back, ass and face with a whip. Whips may be kept by members of the public as mementos. Whips will be provided by IGN.

Couldn't agree with you more.

I personally like IGN. I may not always agree with their opinions, but I enjoy their video reviews.

I used to like them for being quick with the news. Then I discovered Kotaku, Gizmodo and i09.
Still, they score points for Chobot and good walkthroughs.

its the same reason why every major review site sucks, they pander to the big publishers/developers by handing out 9s and 10s left and right, trash games they made up their mind about before they came out based on flaws present in games they gave out 10s to and make up the dumbest lists and features by throwing darts at names on a board, among other things.

for the record though, ign isnt that bad most of the time, just like gamespot and all the others, but they used to be a lot better. and hey, at least their not as bad as gametrailers and x-play.

Well, it seems to me that they are among the game critics who purposefully pander to the big-name developers by handing out artificially high scores which are often unwarranted. To do such a thing is to contradict the whole purpose of being a critic - once you're handing out scores which aren't even representative of one's own opinion, you're no longer a critic, you're a whore.

I'm going to be completely petty about this. I hate their site layout and design. It looks like they have way too much money to spend on looking super-slick and nifty, and they shouldn't have that much money on hand, because they are supposed to be a video game review site.

It's like a dev studio site. If you clearly spend way more time and money trying to catch the attention of 15 year olds with their parents' credit cards than working on your content, I don't like you.

I also know almost every single game ever made uses positive IGN quotes in its promotional material, so they seem to be the Earl Dittman of game reviews.

And we all know that's Gamespot's job.

I know. It's awful. I can't even stand to look at it, that's how bad it is.

I'll click on it and listen to it, but I can't look at it.

It's...just too horrible
I would rather watch it instead of listening to it, it's just so damn painful. It's like a sledgehammer to the ears.

That's not petty, that's merely personal preference. It's much the same with people and relationships, sure, a woman could have the greatest personality ever, but if she looks and handles like Elmer Fudd then you're not going to want to shag her. Crude comparison, but apt.

True, but I don't think many people take notice if Gamespot or IGN are wanking off games, quite frankly their reviews have become quite meaningless, there may be a couple of credible people still among them, but they're few and far between.

I rarely take notice of the names of the "reviewers" that IGN uses, so I can't speak for this man, but I will say that I don't mind Russ Pit's stuff, sure some of his reviews seem strange to me (For example his AVP review, I liked the game, but I feel it's only worth half price), but he does mention most issues that the games have and compared to places like IGN he's far less influenced by companies and their opinions (maybe in their minds the Escapist is small potatoes, or the Escapist has turned it away, etc). Such qualities in a games reviewer is something that does earn a shitload of brownie points with me.

On a final note, as much as I dislike IGN, Gamespot is countless times worse in every area.

As someone above mentioned, they hand out 10's to shitty games because they lick the balls of the companies that made them. They can fuck off.

That fucking woman "Epic for the wiiiiiin" hurt my ears. Fucking witch.

I hate the layout of the site honestly. I hate how they load ad pages in between pages.
I find the whole thing unintuitive to navigate.
Also I don't particularly enjoy their forum crowd, any of their editorials, or their reviews.

So why would I go there?

Already a thread about this.

OT, because they're a bunch of biased pieces of shit who hardly ever know what the fuck they're talking about in reviews, have been systematically trying to disregard the PS3 as a system, they suck the balls of Microsoft, only give popular games positive reviews and they're responsible for this:

I would say that they treat Nintendo worse (they really seem to hate Nintendo), but yeah they do look like they're on Microsoft's payroll sometimes. Like they didn't give M$ enough praise already, their current editor-in-chief was the head 360 editor before earning that position. For a couple weeks after he got the job, I saw a nice little series of very scathing articles against Nintendo, written by him. From what I've read, even their Nintendo editor doesn't like Nintendo.

And that video... just... no.

I don't hate IGN, I just don't like most of their reviews and articles. I visit regularly out of habit but yea, it's pretty dull but occasionally they have something interesting.

I visit Gamespot regularly too, also out of habit. I've been doing that since Navaro was fired. I've saw the brutal fall from grace.

By all that's good in this world, aaargh.
This is painful.
OT: While I think Gamespot is way WAY worse, IGN do deserve some critisism, too.
I refet you to their review of Blur -
it was degradingly horrible

Nah, that was Gamespot that fired the guy who slagged off Kane & Lynch when the site was doing heavy promoting.
You're correct. Thanks.
I actually have my library logged with IGN. but I don't think they let you do it anymore.
I only ever read the Closing Comments for games I have already, just to see if I've bought a stinker or not.
And even then, my opinion will differ.

The problem with IGN is that they're notorious for jumping on any bandwagon they can in order to pander to their readers. This means doing things like giving games inflated scores (especially if it's a largely-promoted game) and creating inflammatory articles designed to appeal specifically to the anti-fans. Then there's their actual reviews, which most of the time contradict the score they give to a game. I remember reading their review for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which ended with a line like "as a gamer, I wanted to love it, but as a critic, I couldn't let the faults slide." The game received an 8.9 anyway, which by their own criteria is a very recommendable game. Stuff like that just makes it nearly impossible to take IGN seriously nowadays.

Yes, I'm aware they gave Super Mario Galaxy 2 a perfect 10, but I still stand by this post.

Most of the critisims against them can be leveled against many sites. Of course they hype things, they're journalists, thats what journalists do.

And mentioning flaws and then giving a high score can be justified, i own pleanty of flawed games that i would highly recommend to people.
