Its a sports game.
Key word: Sports.
You are an oddity among us as you apparently are a sport fan.

People hate it because sports games are boring and unfun, and EA releases what's essentially the same game with minor additions and tweaks every year.

One of the main reasons is that it's the only series that can use any NFL team's likeness, essentially killing off any competition (aside from collage football games) and creating a monopoly. That, and there's usually very little deviation of gameplay from game to game.

Pretty much this, but also, if you want to play sports, you should play sports.

A lot of nerds are... well nerds. The entire appeal of sports in general is lost on much of the pasty basement dwelling populace. American football does not appeal to me, but I can appreciate that the madden series is full of solid, well made games.

I love watching football, but I don't want to play sports games. They aren't what I want in a game. I find them boring. I'd rather play/watch real sports.

I'd say the main issue is that it comes out every year, and the main differences between each year to year tend to be... minimal, to be kind. And they sell each one for 60 dollars. And they're wildly more successful than most gaming nerds favorite series. We take that shit personally. Plus, there are some people who only play Madden or NBA or whatever sports games, and try to pass themselves off as gamers, or other people mistake them for gamers. We like to not be associated with that.

I've never disliked them myself though, just wouldn't buy them for them for the reasons outlined above. I have a brother who gets one every couple years, we play when I go visit. It's the only game he can beat me in :p

Personally I don't care for sports games at all.
But it's pretty easy to understand why people hate the series. They are charging full price every year for the exact same game with a few minor changes.

They should release a Madden/Fifa/NHL/NBA game every two or three years and update rosters with patches and DLC. So whenever a new EA Sports game comes out it will be very different to the one that preceded it, making it seem like less of a rip off.

Reasons stated above and the fact that I get sick of hearing about. So many web adverts, commercials. If I could ignore it any easier I might not hate it as much.

This is really my problem with the games. I enjoy them at friend's houses, but the snake-like business tactics really bug me.

I tried picking up one of these games, and found it to be an uninteresting mess of charts and annoying announcers.

Took too long too.

ITs a lackluster franchise. Its been nearly half a decade since the last good Madden game. NHL and FIFA are sports titles to be proud of.

I love watching NFL on tv especially the superbowls (when it isn't interrupted by adverts every play!!!!)

But when it comes to the games i don't enjoy playing them, no particular reason just can't get into them which saddens me because i bet they are alot of fun.

I'm definately a sports fan and I don't hate Madden, I just don't think the "innovations" they add from year to year in the games are worth a $60 upgrade. The same can be said for every sports game. In fact, I usually just wait a couple of years and buy the games for next to nothing, sure I don't get online play or updated rosters, but I don't play online anyway and rosters are easy to fix thanks to create a player. I'd pay $10-$15 for a yearly update, but not $60, it's just not worth it.

Fix'd.

It's a fun game to play with your friends. You wouldn't play Left 4 Dead on your own. I feel that Madden is essentially a game to bust out when friends are over or to play online. Then, if the want takes you, you can play a fully fleshed out single player game, something Left 4 Dead didn't have. Yet nerds like us always seem to gush over Valve's zombie-'em-up and hate EA's football-'em-up. Just because 'it's a sports game'.
