Because people have different opinions and different tastes?

Seriously. All these "Why the ___ hate?" threads can be answered if people would just realize that one fact.

People hate it because sports games are boring and unfun, and EA releases what's essentially the same game with minor additions and tweaks every year.
that is what games are suppossed to do however ea doesnt add enough is what you mean.
I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean. Games are supposed to only add on minor additions and tweaks? First of all, a lot of people like original games like, say, Psychonauts. (Just an example.) Psychonauts, while it may have taken some pointers from other games and movies, it didn't add minor tweaks and changes to something that already existed. The art was not from a previous game, nor was the soundtrack, cast of characters, or exact method of playing and combat.

If you were talking about sequels, I understand a bit more, but sequels are supposed to add more things than Madden does. I wouldn't pick up Half Life 2, Episode 3 and start to play it, only to find that the maps and enemies are exactly the same, and the only things that really changes the experience are a graphics boost and Gordon Freeman's new pink tutu.

I love watching NFL on tv especially the superbowls (when it isn't interrupted by adverts every play!!!!)

But when it comes to the games i don't enjoy playing them, no particular reason just can't get into them which saddens me because i bet they are alot of fun.
Oh, come on. The ads during the superbowl are the best we see (in the US of A) all damn year. They're a big part of why I even watch.

To me, watching football is something I would like to do in a group, or with someone like my one-hundred-year-old granddad (the last game he watched made him throw his cane at the TV in frustration- hilarious). Gaming is something I do alone, because having to tell a mob of advice-spewing friends to fuck off is rather distracting. The Madden series just takes the worst of both worlds and glues them together.

Pfff. Most of the US says the exact same thing about what we call soccer and the rest of the world calls football. Given the choice, I would much rather watch Americanischefußball than Fußball. On TV, the former looks rather like some sort of ancient military exercise (imagination required), while the latter looks too much like a bunch of marbles rolling about in a bowl.

However, I prefer playing soccer because the cuts in the action are few and far between, and also because I've been on the bottom of a football pigpile more than once, and I nearly suffocated. The worst thing that's going to happen to you in soccer is getting kicked in the shins- much more refined.
lol yeah the ads are awesome (mostly) but it does grate when they are on every 0.2 seconds :D *slight exaggeration there*

Also football used to be a good game until it became about getting freekicks and penalties in stead of you know ... SCORING GOALS!!!!

but referee he looked at me wrong he needs to be sent off! bunch of whiney over paid babies!!

Now American footballers take the full force of a slam and get back up and carry on. Same is with rugby much more of a mans sports compared to football.

Same game every year with minor tweaks. Its not fiscally responsible to just update the rosters and add new skins which is why they release the same game every year.

Whoa whoa whoa! Hang on a minute... What about Baseball?
Still not the best viewing experience, but it's less stop-start and is much simpler, therefore easier to watch. American football looks like an overcomplicated, slowed down version of rugby, Baseball doesn't look like an inferior version of a foreign game so I don't sit there thinking "why would anyone bother with this over cricket" or whatever.
To each his own, I guess. I've never been more bored than the day that my father took to out to the ballgame, whereas the football game we went to is still one of the highlights of my life.

However, baseball was my favorite sport to play when I was younger. I was damned good. I wish I hadn't stopped playing. Could have possibly gone somewhere with it.
Oh I hate watching the sport, that doesn't mean I don't think going to a game would be amazing fun. I'm not the biggest cricket fan, but I've never (and never will) turned down an opportunity to go to the boxing day test, it's just a fantastic day and the atmosphere is unlike anything else I've experienced.

Maybe most of the US do prefer it to soccer (I'd compare American football to rugby over soccer, but I don't imagine many Americans know what rugby[footnote]Rugby is a game, played with a an oval like ball, where big blokes pretty much charge each other and try to score a try (essentially the same thing as a touchdown in your game), one can kick a field goal but a try is worth considerably more points). To watch, it looks a bit like American football, except the clubs don't constantly stop the game to change players or strategy.[/footnote] is). I'd apply the same logic to the FIFA games as I would to the madden games anyway: They are repetitive and boring, typically hated by gamers because it's nearly always more fun to go out and play soccer than sit in front of a screen and yell at an annually released game that's barely changed in the past 10 years (I will concede I've had some fun while playing a FIFA or even an NHL game, but that's purely because it's competitive and I was playing with mates, they are still terrible games).

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who isn't American liking American football.

Pretty much this, but also, if you want to play sports, you should play sports.
I generally agree with the fact that sports games aren't usually fun.

But it's like saying 'If you want to play counter-strike, go outside with a gun.'
or 'If you want to race, get your car and race.'
even 'If you want to role-play go and role-play'
Not really, because going outside with a gun, or having some dangerous street race is actually dangerous. Playing sport with some people does come with the risk of injury, but doesn't have the added danger of either killing people or ending up in gaol.

Come to think of it, neither have I. Most of us just presume that since people by-and-large like our music and McD's, they must adore everything else this nation and culture (if indeed this puddle of piddle-brained twerps warrant either of those terms) have to offer.

And yes, I have actually heard of rugby. I've never played it, but I have been hit by a stray ball numerous times while standing on the sidelines during games my uncle plays in.

*EDIT: Wow, I fucked the syntax on this post damn good. Sorry.

Numerous reasons, all listed below:
1) It's a sports game, and most hardcore games hate that genre for somewhat obvious reasons
2) Because the main audience of the series seems to be mainly frat boys and "bullies" and other testosterone-addled men
3) Because it is released every year with a $60 dollar price tag when all that needs to be done is have a $5 - $10 downloadable roster update
4) Because it is released every year and still makes a shitload of money
5) Because it is successful
6) Because other people look down upon it, and it's cool to hate popular things

Take your pick.

Oh, Christ, yes. I live in New England, so naturally it's 'Tom Brady this, Tom Brady that...' The man spends more time getting interviewed for the tabloids than actually doing his job- if it can indeed be called a job.

That's just it; sports were fun when they were pastimes. Now they're jobs, and that's completely fucked it over. It's been broken down into statistics, rules, hype, steroids, publicity, and advertising. All the life has been sucked out of most mainstream sports. NASCAR has a little left, and the auto racing world in general has retained its spark fairly well.

I hate FIFA because if the EA servers decide you're not getting to win an online match; you won't win. Your players become sluggish, your passes don't connect, your defenders are out of place and your players won't shoot no matter how many times you slam circle. meanwhile the other guy's players are sprinting past your defenders even if they have a 67 speed rating, they can't be shoved off the ball no matter what and lucky goals will be pulled out of nowhere with no effort on their part. I've had this "momentum" on my side too and it ruins the game.

I've been told Madden is the same but I've never played it because I find it boring.

Because I, like a number of people on the Escapist, are not sports fans. Particularly ones that involve as much brute force as Handegg (since you use your hand, not your foot, and an egg-shaped thing, not a ball).

In Europe people couldn't care less for Madden because American Football has about the same amount of popularity here as Elephant polo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_polo]. In the US I assume people hate it for the same reason as people hate the Fifa series here: there being a new version with minor changes every year, and people still buying each instalment en masse.

Ugh, I hate watching football. They all get in their little lines, movie for ten god damn seconds, and stop, fuck around a bit, and then move again. It's so stilted.

At least soccer keeps going!

And I also associate bad memories with football. Because the people who play it were all jackasses at my school, and everyone looked up to them, and them only.

I play sports (Lacrosse, Hockey, a bit of Tennis) and I hate madden. Because if your going to play sports either competitively or for a way to waste a dull afternoon. Then you should actually play the damn things, and not a game that's had 5000 reskins.

Really... lol.. if you don't like football I don't guess anyone would expect you to like a football game. Madden is a good football game for people that like football or football games. And there's a reason Madden is still around and Gameday isn't. It's a better game that has continually gotten better.

Now, I've hated Madden in the past because low phrase count and you'd hear the same shit from Madden over and over and over (but never as bad as gameday) and that got retarded.

From what I've been able to glean:

Madden's an annoying retarded fat man who won't shut up.

Oh, you mean the games?

1) Sports Game: You have a higher nerd content on this site than the general population. Many people love sports games, but apparently in the nerd sector they are despised like actual sports and women.

2) Disappointment: While the first John Madden was a huge step forward in NFL simulation gaming, it has since devolved into a by-the-numbers repeat every year, raking in cash, taking no risks, and adding nothing new.

3) EA/NFL-Whoring: Back in the day (you know, when the Madden series was getting started) the NFL sold licenses to make official NFL games to multiple developers. This encouraged competition and made it possible for the Madden games to even exist. However in the past few years the NFL has sold an EXCLUSIVE license to EA for the Madden games, so nobody else can make an NFL video game. This makes it impossible to challenge the shitty incremental Madden updates.

4) Yankee-hate: Everyone hates the Yankees. It's well known. They've got all the money and all the titles, and because they're the best, we hate them. Same thing with Madden. Everyone throws rocks at the most obvious target.
