I play FFXI, and at this point noobs are such a rarity that they're kind of coveted in a way. It's like seeing a rare, but extremely annoying bird. But I believe that there is quite simply a sense of etiquette in most online games, and noobs haven't learned it yet. It's not for a very long time that they learn it either because they beg, they're stubborn, and because of that stubbornness they're often hard to teach.

n00bs are not just new players, they are people who can't figure out anything for themselves and annoy the crap out of everyone by continuing to fail so hard. They never learn from their mistakes; they spam questions and don't listen to the answers; they whine about skilled players 'cheating'. It has more to do with how you act than how long you've played. There just seems to be that new == n00b connection, because 'n00b' is something you can eventually grow out of.

Some n00bs remain that way for years, while other people are never n00bs.

I think you may have it wrong. What you are describing is a "newbie", someone who is new to a game's multiplayer section, who people generally don't have too much of a problem with.

The term "noob" is a name given to people who either use methods designed for new players (ie using the grenade launcher in MW2) despite being experienced player, or are generally unlikeable because of anger issues, excessive swearing/gay jokes, or the like.

i think like everyone says, newbs are fine, n00bs aren't. It isn't that big a deal for me until i keep get put on their team repeatedly in games. but if they get put on the other team hoozah for noobs!

Like a guy in a game of Halo. We were on Val, and the other team had just got the Banshee. My immediate reaction was to get that weird rocket thingy that would fire rockets at the banshee, and hopefully stop it from making us dead.

Some ass betrays me, grabs it and fires the whole stock of ammo at literally nothing, before quitting the match. THAT is a n00b.

Only the new players who break the game for themselves are worth of hate. For example, seeing a new player in Bad Company 2 play Rush like team deathmatch is a very frustrating experience.

You are refering to newbe's (new players). Their alright, noobs are new or bad players that act like they know everything and like idiots (thus anoying).

Noobs are morons who abuse certain things in games and possibly claim to be pro. They forget other people are actually playing the game and only care about their own enjoyment. You don't play football with friends and break someone's leg with a slide tackle or do any other dirty tackle purposely. That is why people hate them.

Newbs who are new at the game are fine.

Based on what I hear thrown at me over voice chat, a n00b is anyone who does anything to further the objectives of the game rather than attempting solely to kill the enemy team. Alternatively, anyone who's actually good enough at a game to kill, score against, outrace, or generally beat an opponent with a microphone. I love xbox live!

I have no particular hatred to newbs though, in the strict sense of 'people new to the game'
