Why does everyone love FFVII?

Every single time I see a poll online about "The Best Game of all Time", Final Fantasy VII is, if not the winner, at least in the running of the final three or four. I, sadly, did not have a playstation growing up, and could not have played this game. After I was told it was the best game ever, I tried to give it a try, but I had already been ruined by the current gen graphics. I just couldn't bring myself to suffer through the game's graphics long enough to get a good answer on this. So I ask, why is it one of the best games of all time?

Please note that I am not saying it isn't, I just want to know why it is. Maybe if I had played it back then I would agree.

The same reason people love half life 2 or halo or any other game. Some just find it fun, some like the story ect. Simply nostalgia or just personal taste, hell I tend to see more haters than fans really.

I think that the haters are only haters because everyone likes it. It's more popular to try to be edgy then it is to actually break down and agree it's a good game.

Though, against the fun side of the argument: Yes, it might have been fun, but come on... really THAT fun? From what I have seen of the game, you pick a move, run over, hit the person, they hit you with the move, repeat.

How could this possibly be more fun then any game made by the current standards of gaming? Sure, it was fun back when it came out and it was compared to what was out at the time... but it can't honestly be considered a great game for these times.

If someone came out with this game by a different name with different characters with such little depth, everyone would just scoff at it for being such a poor game.

I loved the story, the setting, the immensity, the epicness, the conspiracy, the music, the characters and more... But to be honest, I do find myself ruined as well by current day graphics. I tried playing it again but couldn't be bothered because it was also still to fresh in my memory. Might give it a try if it gets on to the store someday soon!

I have to say I have always loved RPGs but the final fantasy series has got to be some of the most tedious games I have ever played.
I liked most of the storys especially #9 they are well thought out and well told even though half the characters are annoying as hell.
However like Cuniculus I dident play it when it came out i played it way after, for me though it wasent the graphics, it was the tedious emo main character and the story.
I know people love it and more power to ya, but for me I really dident like the game.
Mabey people just like big swords.

Because it was one of the first 3D roleplaying games out there, not to mention it was alot of peoples first RPG. Also it just has a phenomenal story.

I think it was the story people liked, not really the gameplay.

For alot of people it was their first mainstream RPG coupled with nostalgia and the fact it propelled the popularity of a genre in the west its not really suprising its loved. Its not aged well but i still look fondly on it, I liked the characters, plot, cinematics for the time were awsome and the music score was great. That and it was the first game that ever lasted me 80+ hours.

I have yet to play it myself but I assume it's the overall experience of playing it through to the end. In my personal opinion a game that's good in the long run is better then a game that's good for the moment.

A big part of it is nostalgia. Probably most of it actually.

FFIV, FFVI, FFIX and FFX are all, at least, 3 times as good as VII.

Maybe I just don't get it. My first game was Super Mario World, and I still love it. It's the only game I can sit and play over and over again. It's so simple and yet fun, but I do realize the difference between it and say Super Mario Galaxy. I just don't get how nostalgia can be so powerful.

Maybe people just aren't being subjective. Maybe they have the idea in their head that it was awesome, and still is awesome. So when they ask what the best game ever is, instead of doing a side by said comparison and saying "Well, now-a-days I'd rather play Halo than FFVII." they just default to the game they had the most fun with at the time.

Two words that perhaps made Final Fantasy so insanely popular among the Asian folks:

Tifa.
Hentai.

The story was very interesting and deep. The battle system allowed for total customization without being broken (unlike FFX and FFXII). The main enemy is one you could see as a badass but still despise. The main character also had a deep (and decently original) back story. We also got to learn all of the other characters back stories which were all interesting. It also had alot of other things to do like Golden Saucer.

Haters have a tendency of being more vocal.
